Fastest update of the latest chapter of Clark in the Marvel Universe!
"Hey, Banner—long time no see!" As Clark and the others disembarked from the aircraft, he immediately spotted Natasha and Bruce Banner waiting on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.
"Long time no see, Clark." Banner gave a small smile. It was hard to believe it had already been nearly a year since they last met.
"How have you been? Judging by your clothes… not so great, huh?" Clark commented, glancing at Banner's worn and tattered outfit with a sigh.
Banner's current life was one of his own choosing. As a world-class physicist, he should be respected wherever he went. But his compassion had made his path more difficult.
In the Marvel universe, Banner was undeniably one of the top minds. If he wanted, he could have openly defied the government—and no one knew what that would've led to. As the Hulk, he could basically rampage across Earth unchecked.
But Banner didn't do that. He feared the destruction he might unleash as the Hulk. He didn't want to lose control or accidentally hurt innocent people. So he chose to hide, moving from place to place, trying to keep his temper under control and avoid transforming.
"Honestly, it hasn't been bad. Peaceful. No one bothered me, and the Hulk didn't come out. Materially it wasn't great, but mentally? I was content." Banner had been in India—though the conditions weren't ideal, he was respected there not as a monster, but as a healer.
While chatting with Clark, Banner noticed Steve and Diana behind him. When he saw Steve, he realized who it was. After all, Banner's original assignment was to replicate the super-soldier serum that had created Captain America.
Natasha had told him they'd recovered the Captain from the ice, but seeing Steve in person—looking like no time had passed—was still a shock.
Steve noticed Banner's disbelief and smiled, stepping forward and extending his hand.
"Steve Rogers. Good to finally meet you, Dr. Banner."
Thanks to Coulson, Steve already knew about some of his future teammates—Banner included.
Steve wasn't sure whether trying to replicate the serum had been the right choice, but he respected the man who had gone into hiding rather than hurt people. Very few would willingly live anonymously just to avoid doing harm.
Having seen footage of the Hulk and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s assessment of Banner, Steve understood that if Banner really wanted to, he could've had a much easier life.
"I heard you were coming… but still, I can hardly believe it," Banner said after shaking Steve's hand, still stunned.
"They also told me… you might be able to find the Tesseract?"
"And what else did they say?" Banner asked, feeling a little embarrassed. After all, it was his attempt to enhance the super-soldier serum that led to the Hulk's creation.
"I didn't listen to anything else." Steve's response was short but sincere. His charm came from his integrity.
That single sentence sparked something in Banner—a sense of mutual respect. The same feeling he'd only ever gotten from people like Clark or Tony.
Although Tony was friendly enough, there was still a cautious edge to him. Without his armor, even Tony felt threatened by the Hulk's unpredictability. Banner had always sensed that.
Clark, on the other hand, never seemed concerned about the Hulk. Perhaps because even the Hulk wouldn't last long against Clark's fists. Realizing this made Banner feel slightly disappointed.
But Steve felt different from both of them. He didn't treat Banner like a threat or a tool—just like a person. Compared to Clark, maybe Steve really was just a regular guy… but he made Banner feel normal again.
"I think you should all head inside. The wind up here is going to mess with your breathing soon," Natasha cut in, seeing the group engrossed in conversation with no intention of moving.
As if to echo her warning, a loudspeaker blared overhead:
"All personnel, clear the deck! All personnel, clear the deck!"
"Are we about to dive?" Steve asked, feeling the shift under his feet as the Helicarrier started moving.
"No. But if you want me to stay locked in a pressurized metal tube underwater, I'm leaving," Banner said flatly. If Natasha had said yes, he would've walked off then and there.
He knew he wouldn't be able to control the Hulk in such a claustrophobic environment—and the idea of waking up at the bottom of the ocean terrified him.
"This'll feel worse than being underwater," Clark added. He knew this wasn't a submarine—it was a flying aircraft carrier. S.H.I.E.L.D. called it a Helicarrier—a real, flying fortress.
"Miss Diana, I don't think we should bother with these men anymore. This wind is terrible for our skin," Natasha said as she turned toward the ship's interior.
"Fine, I'll come with you." Three rough men or two gorgeous women? Clark didn't need to think twice.
As Clark and Diana followed Natasha inside, they found Nick Fury standing alone, hands behind his back.
"Clark, I'm glad you came. I admit—I made a mistake. But I think we can make up for it," Fury said.
Truthfully, the moment he saw Clark, Fury felt a tinge of regret. If he could do it over, he'd still retrieve the Tesseract—but maybe store it somewhere far safer.
"Any progress? I sensed another activation of the Tesseract. Loki's probably about to make his next move."
"We've already tapped into every camera in the world that has wireless connectivity—phones, laptops, surveillance cams. If the device is online, it's our eye. Now we just wait for them to show up."
But even with all that, it's still extremely difficult to track them down. After all, Barton is a trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. He knows exactly how to avoid or block cameras.
That's why we're hoping Banner can help us track the Tesseract using the gamma radiation it emits. If he can, we might find Loki soon."
Seeing that Fury wasn't very technical, he turned to Hill to explain the situation in more detail.
"You'll have to narrow the area. I need spectrometers. Lots of spectrometers. Contact every lab you can find and ask them to place their spectrometers on rooftops, calibrated to detect gamma radiation."
"I'll design a tracking algorithm. At the very least, we can eliminate zones and concentrate your resources."
"Now, can you get me a workspace?"
Realizing this wasn't a social visit, Banner and Steve eventually followed Coulson into the command center. After hearing Hill's report, Banner quickly proposed a set of refinements and requests.
And just as Banner began developing a system to detect and trace gamma radiation…
Loki received word from the Chitauri leader:
The reinforcements he had been waiting for—had arrived.
