"Hey, Clark, you're back?" The moment Coulson received Clark's call, he realized that Clark's business must be done.
"All done. How are things going on your end? Any leads on Loki?" Clark asked.
"Not yet, but we've convinced Banner to join us. He's on his way now. He's the top expert in gamma radiation. I think with him, we should be able to locate the Tesseract soon."
Although Coulson sounded confident, Clark didn't think Banner would be able to find the Tesseract in Loki's possession. After all, if Banner had managed to find it, Tony's new tower probably wouldn't have become the final battlefield.
"By the way, Clark, I'm heading to the Avengers base with Cap. Want to come with us?" On the other end of the line, Coulson looked at the approaching Captain America. After a brief hesitation, he extended the invitation to Clark.
After all, if he didn't invite Clark, he could enjoy some time alone with his idol. But after thinking about it, he figured it was better to let two of Director Fury's core Avengers meet each other early.
Since the Avengers weren't S.H.I.E.L.D.-trained agents, team coordination could be a problem. That's why Nick Fury planned to assign a leadership role within the team.
As for candidates, Nick Fury actually favored Steve Rogers. Compared to others, he came from a military background, had strong morals, and was dependable. But in terms of combat ability, Steve was only average compared to the rest of the team.
So while Natasha or Hawkeye might be better in combat, they wouldn't be able to control Banner or Tony. That's why Fury planned to rely on both Clark and Cap as the team's core.
Clark would be the powerhouse who could suppress the entire team by force, while Cap would serve as the team's moral compass.
Why not make Clark the sole leader? Because Fury knew very well: their Superman was essentially a "salted fish"—a lazy man with no real goals in life.
Fury thought maybe Clark's powers were so overwhelming that even if he drank all day, he could still control the world effortlessly. Having read Injustice, Fury was especially cautious—he had increased protection around those close to Clark. He didn't want a scenario where Superman ruled the world by force.
However, Fury had never shared this concern publicly. Even Coulson didn't know that the person their director feared more than Loki stealing the Tesseract—was Clark.
Faced with Coulson's invitation, Clark turned to Diana. He respected her opinion. Diana simply nodded. She wasn't some weak "flower vase" of a woman.
Though this wasn't her world, Diana, with her heart full of justice, wasn't as cynical as Clark. Perhaps because of her divine mission, she had always chosen her own way to protect peace.
"No need for you to come pick me up—I'll come to you," Clark said after hanging up. Rather than have Coulson waste time, he simply opened a portal to Coulson's location.
Whoosh!
Coulson, having just ended the call, suddenly heard a strange sound nearby. He turned around in shock—like he'd just seen a ghost.
Because right beside him, a glowing blue portal had appeared out of thin air. And from the other side, Clark and Diana stepped through.
"Hey! Coulson, why do you look like you've seen a ghost?" Clark said, waving his hand in front of Coulson's face.
"Clark… what are you—or no, I mean, what is that?" Coulson pointed at the portal, which looked exactly like the ones created by the Tesseract when it went out of control. "Did you get the Tesseract?"
Given his experience, it was only natural for Coulson to mistake it for the Tesseract's work. And if Clark had told him yes, Coulson probably would've been thrilled.
"Unfortunately, no. I think it's magic—I just learned how to do it." Clark didn't want to say too much about Kamar-Taj. It wasn't time to reveal that part yet.
"Oh, okay…" Hearing it was Clark's new power, Coulson could only nod and move on.
"Are you Coulson?" While Clark and Coulson spoke, Captain America finally arrived. Steve first greeted Coulson, then curiously looked Clark up and down. After all, he had seen the dramatic entrance Clark had just made—who wouldn't be curious?
"Yes, Cap. Got your stuff packed? We can leave anytime." Coulson turned around, instantly lighting up at the sight of his idol.
"I'm ready. Who are these two?" Steve asked, looking at Clark and Diana.
"Clark Kent. You should've seen the headlines about him lately—he's all over the news. And this is Diana Prince, a friend of his."
Coulson introduced Clark to Steve. As for Diana, he knew she wasn't from this universe, and Steve probably hadn't read any of her comics. So he just said she was a friend of Clark's.
"Front page? You're Superman!" Steve suddenly remembered the headlines he'd seen recently and instantly recognized the name. "Fury told me you were the one who saved me. Thanks. Oh, and I've watched a few movies about you recently."
Though Steve sometimes thought Fury shouldn't have brought him back, he couldn't say that to his rescuer's face.
"I wish I'd never made those movies," Clark said, joking—he guessed Steve was referring to the DC Superman films.
"…"
"I'm kidding." Clark added, seeing Steve's lack of humor. "By the way, how are you adjusting? Waking up and realizing decades have passed must be tough."
"Yeah, I went to sleep in the middle of a war, and when I woke up, it had ended decades ago. Now I'm just some outdated relic, dragged into more fighting…"
Steve could only laugh bitterly at himself.
"Cap, please don't say that. You're the first superhero in history. To all of us, you're a symbol of national spirit. We need you." Coulson couldn't take hearing Steve doubt his worth any longer.
"Steve, you're Coulson's idol. He's even collected a full set of your trading cards—some of them are ultra-rare!" Clark said with a grin, patting Coulson on the shoulder.
"We should get going—it's getting late." Embarrassed by Clark's words, Coulson quickly changed the subject.
"Yeah, let's head out. I really want to see your new base—huh?" Just as they were about to board the aircraft, Clark suddenly felt the energy of the Cosmic Cube stir within him.
He immediately realized—the Cube had just been activated somewhere.
