Chapter 112: Pain
Land of Rain, A small, hard-shelled nation wrapped in mist and drizzle. The rain never let up here. It was more than weather; it was atmosphere, silence, and surveillance.
Five years had passed since Yahiko's death. Hanzo hadn't been seen for over a year. George knew what that meant. Pein now ran the place.
It was George's first time here, but he took in the streets and narrow alleys without rushing.
The country wasn't wealthy, but it fed itself. No one's stomach was empty. In this world, that was already something.
Nagato, unlike Yahiko, actually knew how to govern. The infrastructure here worked, and the people weren't starving. But with Yahiko gone, Nagato had snapped inward, all his pain calcified into something dangerous.
And now, with Obito whispering in his ear, he was more radical than ever.
To Konoha, Nagato was still a major threat. In the original timeline, he invaded the village and turned it into rubble. George wasn't going to let that happen.
The rain in this country wasn't normal. Chakra clung to every droplet. George held out his hand, catching a few drops and nodding. "Rain Tiger at Will Technique... yeah, he's watching."
He had left a clone back in Konoha and came alone, no guards, no entourage. If he could, he wanted to cut off Obito before things spiraled.
Maybe even sway Nagato and Konan. This was a small window of time when they could still be reasoned with.
Deep in the Akatsuki base, Nagato's eyes opened. The chakra in the rain had changed. Something massive had entered the village's perimeter.
"Someone's here," he muttered. His voice was cold, flat.
Konan looked over. "Who is it?"
"Not sure. He's Strong, really strong. Someone I don't recognize."
She frowned. Ever since that man calling himself Uchiha Madara had shown up, everything had shifted.
Nagato followed his words almost blindly, convinced of the path forward. But Konan never fully trusted him.
"Let Pein go," Nagato said. "He's waiting at the village entrance."
A few moments later, the Six Paths of Pain moved through the rain-soaked treetops and landed in a clearing.
George stood there, hands behind his back, as calm as if he were sightseeing.
"All six? Wow~. You must really think highly of me," George said, raising an eyebrow.
Nagato, through the Deva Path, stared. Recognition sparked.
"Daimyo of Land of Fire," he said.
George gave a small nod. "Nice to see you too, Nagato. Mind coming out yourself?"
"You don't belong here," Nagato said sharply. "Why did you come?"
"To talk. But if you want to posture, go ahead."
The tension thickened. Pein raised a hand.
"Planning to use the Rinnegan?" George asked casually.
Nagato narrowed his eyes. "You know too much."
"I know enough to be here without fear. And I know Madara isn't around. Just you, Konan... and your borrowed confidence."
That was enough. Nagato moved.
"Universal Pull"
The Deva Path activated its gravity jutsu. George didn't budge. He watched calmly as debris slid past him.
"Asura Attack"
The mechanical Path shifted, its arm morphing into a cannon. Chakra gathered. The blast flew, only to vanish against a crimson sigil that George summoned mid-air.
With a flick, the beam shattered into tiny lights, glowing butterflies drifting harmlessly away.
Even Nagato paused.
George smiled faintly. "Is that all you got, huh?"
"Almighty Push"
Boom. A blast of force roared out. But George was already weaving signs.
Space cracked like broken glass in front of him. The shockwave hit the cracks and disappeared.
"Look, I don't want this turning into a circus," George said. "I came here to make something clear. You're strong, Nagato. But don't test me."
He slid his hands again. The mirror-like cracks expanded outward, swallowing the Pein bodies in one move.
Everything went quiet.
George stood alone in the rain again.
"I'll wait for your answer," he said, almost to himself.
Then he turned and walked into the mist.
