Chapter 290 - Chapter 290: Can’t Let It Go

The shot was so fast that it defied perception. Even with Gu You's Purple Demon Eyes, he could only vaguely glimpse a flicker of grey as it vanished.

Just as the light disappeared, a piercing screech rang out from the distance. In the shadows, a grey-black creature suddenly writhed.

Gu You caught sight of it. It resembled a large lizard, its entire body coated in dark grey scales covered in hooked spikes. One of its eyes had been blasted out. As it shrieked, its body convulsed a few times before dissolving into a swirl of grey mist, which darted deeper into the Abyssal Passage.

So this was an abyssal creature.

Gu You stepped forward, placing himself in front of Long Yuxue. His wings folded behind him as he retracted his battle armor. But in his hand, he now held the Golden Dragon Spear.

"Be careful," Long Yuxue said coolly in his ear.

"Don't worry." Gu You pointed his spear forward and strode ahead.

To him, these things were nothing more than nourishing appetizers. Just enough to whet his appetite.

The abyssal creatures seemed even more diverse than he had expected. He had never seen this particular type before, but from what Long Yuxue had taught him, he quickly identified it. It was a type known as the Devourer Lizard—a stealth-based abyssal creature that consumed the life energy of others to survive.

The Devourer Lizards were a major species among abyssal creatures. Some among them could even rival the charm demon Gu You had faced before. Their strength varied greatly within the species, and their bodies were exceptionally durable. Their only true weakness was their eyes.

"Shhhk!"

Suddenly, several shadows darted toward them like bolts of lightning—more Devourer Lizards. They were social creatures, and the slain one had clearly triggered the group's aggressive retaliation.

Gu You's Golden Dragon Spear vibrated in his grip, and in the next moment, hundreds of spear shadows burst forth, filling the tunnel. All of the charging lizards were immediately engulfed.

A series of sharp, soft sounds rang out as the Devourer Lizards were skewered, one by one, by the dancing golden spears. The speed of the attack was too fast to follow, but Gu You noticed that each time a spear impaled one of the creatures, it would drag out a stream of grey mist. This mist didn't vanish into the abyss—it was instead absorbed into the Golden Dragon Spear, which in turn funneled it into Gu You's body.

The spear purified the mist, converting it into pure energy.

Gu You narrowed his eyes. The sensation of this power flowing into him was intoxicating—so addictive, in fact, that he found it hard to resist.

He was starting to feel like he couldn't live without it.

Behind him, Long Yuxue stood ready with her rifle. Watching Gu You's steady performance and how easily he dispatched the Devourer Lizards, her confidence in him grew. Even in real combat, he showed no fear. Clearly, this wasn't his first time dancing with death.

"Not bad!" she praised, patting his shoulder.

"These little ones are nothing." Gu You smiled as he glanced at his Blood God Ring. The death of three Devourer Lizards had earned him thirty contribution points. Compared to the Four-Clawed Bats from earlier, the Devourer Lizards clearly offered better rewards.

Gu You pressed forward. More Devourer Lizards came charging in, but they were quickly transformed into mist and contribution points. As he pushed through a 500-meter section of the tunnel, he had already slain over forty of them and racked up several hundred contribution points—his first true earnings that could be used toward military rank.

Long Yuxue followed closely behind, eyes full of astonishment. The more she watched, the more stunned she became. Gu You's combat against the Devourer Lizards was precise and deadly. He always struck their eyes or their heads—never missing the target. Their heads were notoriously durable, comparable to refined alloys, yet Gu You's Golden Dragon Spear pierced through them as if they were made of paper.

She couldn't help but wonder, 'What kind of metal is his weapon made of? I should have him make one for me too.'

If Gu You had heard that thought, he would've probably laughed himself hoarse. The Golden Dragon Spear wasn't made of any ordinary metal—it was forged from a vertebra of the Golden Dragon King himself. That kind of material was beyond rare—it was irreplaceable.

Eventually, Long Yuxue relaxed as the two of them reached the second node in the passage.

This chamber was larger than the last—about fifty meters in diameter. The surrounding space was thick with intense energy.

As soon as they reached the entrance, Gu You spotted a pair of grey-white eyes filled with deathly stillness.

It was a massive Devourer Lizard—ten times larger than the ones before. It stretched over seven meters long, with its thick body covered in layered grey scales. As it breathed, its scales expanded and contracted rhythmically, releasing trails of dense grey mist.

"Careful. This one is much stronger than the others. The mist it expels can form armor or illusions—very unpredictable. Don't let it get close," Long Yuxue warned gravely.

But Gu You didn't hesitate. With a flash, he lunged forward, the Golden Dragon Spear pointing ahead. Simultaneously, the purple-gold armor of his battle suit spread over his body. His palms transformed into dragon claws, and violet light danced in his eyes.

A crushing aura of destruction radiated from him.

Long Yuxue blinked, startled by the familiar energy. 'Destruction? His martial soul is destruction-type? But then, how come I sensed light and life attributes from him before?'

She shook her head bitterly.

'So many secrets... I should stop thinking about it.'

The giant Devourer Lizard let out a deep growl. The mist pouring from its scales thickened and surged forward. Just as Gu You's spear reached it, the mist abruptly solidified, enveloping the spear.

But in the same instant, a thunderous boom erupted.

The giant lizard roared in pain as the dense fog around it exploded and half of it was blown away. Its massive body was launched backward, sent flying by a powerful impact.

Gu You didn't even need to look—he knew Long Yuxue's sniper shot had landed true. He had held the front line; she delivered the long-range support. That was how military coordination was supposed to work.

He flicked the Golden Dragon Spear in his left hand. A golden flash burst forth, blasting away the remaining mist. In the next breath, the spear pierced cleanly through the lizard's skull.

A surge of energy, far denser than that of the lesser Devourer Lizards, poured into Gu You's body. The massive creature's corpse dissolved without leaving behind a visible trail of grey mist.

Long Yuxue stepped beside him. "Be careful. Don't charge recklessly. You can't judge abyssal creatures by appearances. Sometimes, even seemingly weak ones can be deadly."

Gu You nodded. "Understood. But you don't need to act unless you're sure I'm in danger."

"Hmph. Ungrateful." Long Yuxue snorted.

Gu You chuckled. 'Women, huh? Of course she wouldn't take that well…'
