Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Shrek City

"You can eat that much?" Shen Yue stared in shock.

In front of her, Gu You was happily devouring his food. It wasn't anything fancy — just buns and noodles — but there was plenty of it, and he was tearing through it all.

The scene was honestly a bit awkward. Xin Ya sat there watching him like someone glued to a livestream of a competitive eater.

Gu You himself was puzzled. He didn't have Tang Wulin's kind of bloodline power that required massive energy intake, so why was he so hungry all the time? 'Could it be that people with dragon-type martial souls are just born to eat a lot?'

"By the way, I've already reported Yuetian's case. When we get back, he can enroll directly," Xin Ya said to Shen Yue. For kids with talent but little money, the Sun Moon Federation had policies in place. Regular families got three years of free primary academy education, but after that, they had to pay for intermediate academy. If a child had talent, though, the government would usually cover the costs. For impoverished families, both primary and intermediate academies were free — but getting a spot as a scholarship student was extremely competitive.

"Thank you." Shen Yue gave a firm, grateful nod.

Two days later, a soul car sped along the Tianhai highway. Xin Ya drove one-handed, occasionally admiring the scenic coastline of the western sea.

Gu You had rolled down his window, gazing out at the endless ocean, his heart full of complex emotions. 'The Star Dou Forest is almost gone. How long will this vast sea last, I wonder?'

Xin Ya noticed Gu You deep in thought and occasionally glanced back at him.

"I know I'm handsome, no need to stare," Gu You said, brushing back his hair.

"Ha! You little brat, acting all smug. You know, sometimes I really feel like you're not a normal six-year-old," Xin Ya replied calmly.

"What, can't I just be mature early?" Gu You sighed. Thanks to Xin Ya teasing him, the sadness he'd felt when leaving his teacher and grandma — and the melancholy he'd had looking out at the sea — slowly faded away.

Shrek City.

There weren't as many towering skyscrapers as Gu You had imagined. Instead, the city was filled with classic, old-style architecture, giving off an ancient charm. But this was a historic city, one that stood alongside Tian Dou City in fame. So the presence of old buildings was completely normal.

Many cutting-edge soul device technologies had been blended into these ancient structures, giving them a unique flavor. For example, a medieval-style house in the distance glowed faintly with yellow particles — that was a soul power shield, powered by solar energy, strong enough to block a fixed soul-guided cannon of level five or below. This was Shrek City's appeal: an overwhelming sense of security.

Gu You gazed into the distance. One towering building pierced the clouds — the headquarters of the Transmission Tower, known as the Heavenly Spirit Tower. It had a total of eighty-one floors, nearly three thousand meters tall.

This was Gu You and Xin Ya's first destination. They had to choose a suitable soul spirit so Gu You could officially become a soul master before heading to Shrek Academy.

"The government has already spoken to the Transmission Tower. Your first six soul rings' spirits are completely free, and you can pick whatever you want. Also, one of Shrek's elders has taken an interest in your talent. Even without the councilor's recommendation, your place at Shrek is guaranteed," Xin Ya said with a hint of envy.

Gu You could only smile faintly. Having talent was a good thing, but crushing others under that weight wasn't. Still, the Federation had clearly paid some price to secure these benefits. Free selection of six spirits — that was no small matter.

Inside the Heavenly Spirit Tower headquarters, Leng Yaozhu frowned slightly as she read the report. The Federation was offering such generous terms for one child?

Innate full soul power, a martial soul unseen for ten thousand years — how interesting. While she didn't swear allegiance to the Transmission Tower, taking on a disciple under her personal name shouldn't be an issue. Surely the Federation wouldn't object. Thinking this, Leng Yaozhu smiled. She didn't believe that she, the renowned Heavenly Phoenix Douluo, one of the continent's most powerful figures, would be refused if she wanted to take on a disciple.

Satisfied, she nodded to herself, then called softly, "Yali."

"Here, Vice Tower Master." Long Yali pushed open the office door and entered.

"I have a task for you…"

By midday, after dawdling along the roadside for a long time, Xin Ya and Gu You finally arrived at the Transmission Tower.

Standing close, Gu You was struck by its magnificent design. The entire building was shaped like an octagon, with three levels, four faces, and eight directions. Every nine floors upward, it narrowed inward, all the way to the sharp spire at the top.

Inside, the space was vast and splendid. The floors were paved with dark gold stone streaked with natural patterns, and massive stone pillars supported a dome nearly fifty meters high.

In the central hall stood two statues. Gu You recognized them at once: the once-famous Spirit Ice Douluo Huo Yuhao and his wife, Dragon Butterfly Douluo Tang Wutong. Along the surrounding walls, unknown soul devices continuously projected moving images — portraits of Huo Yuhao's seven soul spirits and depictions of his legendary, world-shaking feats. And this was just one section. Each of the eighteen Heavenly Pillars recorded different stories, which together formed the complete history.

As for Huo Yuhao himself, Gu You had mixed feelings. From changing his surname to seek revenge, to eventually taking on the Dai name again, and in the end becoming the Tang family's loyal servant because of Tang Wutong… well, it was complicated.

The hall bustled with visitors. Just the Transmission Tower's income from selling soul spirits alone made it practically as wealthy as a kingdom.

"Hello, may I help you?" a smiling receptionist greeted them.

Xin Ya pulled out a special black card and swiped it at the reader. Instantly, data appeared on the soul device's display.

"We're here to select a soul spirit." Gu You's eyes widened with excitement.

"You're Gu You?" The receptionist's voice trembled slightly.

"Yes," Gu You replied, scratching his head, a little confused.

"Please wait a moment. I understand!" The receptionist quickly ran off, leaving a bewildered Gu You and a frowning Xin Ya behind.

"This service attitude, seriously? If it weren't a girl, I'd be cursing already," Xin Ya muttered, annoyed.

"Yali! He's here — the kid you mentioned!" the receptionist said excitedly, having found Long Yali.

"Understood, Huiqing. Next time, keep your voice down — there are many senior offices nearby." Long Yali patted Huiqing's head gently. She knew full well that the office walls were made of materials so strong that even if Shrek City exploded, the sound likely wouldn't reach inside. But she wanted this young newcomer to grasp the subtler lessons.

"I understand, Yali."

While waiting, Gu You pondered what his first soul spirit should be. Suddenly, one word filled his mind: Tyrannosaurus Rex. An ancient dragon type, attack-oriented — it would be a perfect fit. But the key was whether the Transmission Tower even had one. He remembered that Tang Wulin's Tyrannosaurus Rex spirit had been brought out from the Ascension Platform.

"Hello, child." A sudden voice startled Gu You, catching him completely off guard. Even Xin Ya froze beside him, and the surrounding visitors all turned to look.

The girl before them didn't seem very old — maybe seventeen or eighteen. She wore a pale black long dress and carried herself with the grace of nobility. This was Long Yali.

Gu You was puzzled. In other places, this outfit wouldn't stand out, but here, inside the Transmission Tower, there were strict rank divisions. Just like with soul rings, white marked the lowest rank, and then it rose progressively. 'Maybe it's just her personal style,' Gu You thought, noticing that people on the Douluo Continent really loved using colors to show status.
