Chapter 20 - 19. Back to work

Mia's concern grew as she saw Jennifer's reaction. She reached out, taking Jennifer's hand in hers, trying to offer comfort. "Jenny, talk to me. What's going on?" she asked softly, her voice laced with empathy.

But Jennifer was lost in her thoughts, her mind a jumble of memories and emotions. The past was colliding with the present, and she was struggling to cope. Mia's grip on her hand tightened, a silent promise of support and understanding. She would be there for Jennifer, no matter what.

Mia's hands shook as she dialed Tan's number, her heart racing with worry for Jennifer. As soon as he answered, she blurted out her plea. "Sir, please come! Jenny's not doing well, she needs you!"

Tan's voice was laced with panic. "What's wrong? Is she okay? What happened to her?" Mia felt a surge of fear at his tone, but Tan quickly apologized for his outburst. "Sorry, I'm coming. I'm near. Stay with her, please."

With that, Tan hung up and sped towards his house. His mind was filled with thoughts of Jennifer, and he couldn't shake off the feeling that something was wrong. As he drove, his anxiety grew, and he prayed that he would reach Jennifer soon.

Finally, Tan saw his house and felt a sense of relief. He quickly got out of the car and rushed inside. His heart was pounding with worry, and he couldn't wait to be with Jennifer. He cared for her deeply and couldn't bear the thought of her being upset or in distress.

Tan's footsteps echoed through the hallway as he hurried to Jennifer's side. He was determined to be there for her, to comfort her, and to make everything okay. With a deep breath, he entered the living room, his eyes scanning the space for Jennifer's familiar smile. But instead, he saw her pale face, her eyes wide with fear.

Tan's eyes locked onto Mia's, his voice low and urgent. "What happened to Jennifer? Tell me everything." Mia's words tumbled out in a rush. "We were watching a movie, sir, when the screen flickered to life. A masked man appeared, his voice dripping with malice. He said...he said Jennifer was a treasure he couldn't afford to lose, that letting her go was a mistake he'd rectify."

Tan's face twisted in anger, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. The man's words painted a sinister picture, and Tan's mind was racing with worst-case scenarios. Mia's voice trembled as she continued, "I asked Jennifer if this monster was the one who...who took her, but she's been catatonic ever since. I'm scared, sir. I don't know what to do."

Tan's expression softened slightly as he reassured Mia, "Stay with Jennifer. I'll handle this. I am trying to find out the kidnappers and when I will find them, I will make sure to make them pay." His words were laced with determination, and Mia nodded, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. Tan's gaze lingered on Jennifer's pale face before he turned to leave, his heart pounding with a mix of anger and fear.

Two days flew by in the blink of an eye, and Jennifer was trying to put on a brave face, though she wasn't quite back to her usual self. Her wounds still lingered, but her determination to get back to work was something Tan couldn't argue with. As they headed to Tan's office, he opted for the escalator, mindful of Jennifer's claustrophobia. Jennifer's lips curved into a faint smile at his thoughtful gesture, Where as, Emma scoffed knowing the reason of him choosing the escalator.

"Miss Jennifer, what's my schedule for today?" Tan asked, his eyes scanning the day's agenda as they walked. Jennifer began to brief him on his appointments and meetings. Once they reached his cabin, Tan settled into his chair and glanced at his watch. "Alright, let's get down to business. Jennifer, be ready for our meeting in half an hour." Jennifer nodded and took her leave, promising to have the documents ready.

As the door closed behind Jennifer, Tan's gaze turned to Emma, who was still standing infront of Tan's desk. "Do I need to issue a formal invitation for you to return to work?" he asked, his tone laced with sarcasm. Emma's face flushed as she quickly bowed and exited the cabin, leaving Tan alone to prepare for his meeting.

Tan's eyes lingered on the door for a moment before he focused on the tasks ahead. He was pleased to see Jennifer trying to move on, but he knew she still had a long way to Go. He was determined to find the reason why her kidnappers returned and are trying to harm her. As he reviewed the meeting documents, he couldn't help but wonder what other challenges the day might bring. With a deep breath, he steeled himself for whatever lay ahead, his mind already racing with strategies and solutions.

.....

Jennifer knocked softly and entered Tan's office, her voice gentle as she announced, "Sir, the clients are waiting in the meeting room." Tan stood up, his eyes locking onto hers as he said, "Let's go."

As they walked side by side, he matched his pace to hers, mindful of her injury. "How's your wound?" Tan asked, his brow furrowed with concern. Jennifer smiled weakly, "It's okay, sir. I'll be fine."

His consideration was a subtle gesture, but Jennifer's heart swelled with appreciation. Together, they entered the meeting room, Tan's confident stride a perfect complement to Jennifer's cautious steps. "Good morning, everyone," Tan greeted the clients, his voice commanding attention. "Let's get started." As the meeting progressed, Jennifer watched him, her admiration for her husband growing with each passing moment.
