Jack stood in the hallway, his knuckles hovering just inches from Selena's door as though the next knock might finally stir her to answer. He'd already rapped on it half a dozen times, firmly enough to echo against the wood. Still nothing. Not a creak of floorboards, not the faint shuffle of footsteps.
"Selena," he called, his voice edged with impatience. He pressed his ear against the door, straining to catch any sign that she was inside. He expected the sound of soft movement or perhaps her slippers dragging across the floor, perhaps the muffled reply of her voice telling him to wait. But there was only silence, dense and hollow.
He straightened, jaw tightening, and knocked again, harder. "Selena. It's me."
Still, no answer.
