The late afternoon light was streaming through the tall windows of Jack's office, tinting the air a pale gold. Papers were stacked neatly on the edge of his desk. Selena still sat in Jack's leather armchair, her hands curled loosely in her lap, while Jack sat at his table, his body towards Selena.
A knock broke through the silence. Jack didn't turn around to see who was coming. "Come in."
The door eased open just enough for Norman, Jack's secretary, to poke his head in. His usually composed expression was brightened by a flicker of curiosity."Mr. Brooks," Norman said, "Reenee Rosenberg has arrived."
Jack capped his pen and set it aside. "Send her in."
Selena pushed up from her chair almost instinctively. "I'll let you two talk," she murmured, already taking a step toward the door.
Jack's voice stopped her. "Stay." His tone was casual, but it carried a weight that left little room for argument. "I want you to meet her."
