The city outside Selena's apartment blurred behind a veil of soft golden haze. From the fourth floor, the view stretched far enough to look like the world was gently untouched, still, and quiet. But inside her apartment, Selena sat on the edge of her couch, one arm wrapped around her knees, the other loosely holding her phone, the screen dark and silent.
Ten days.
Ten long, aching, wordless days.
She hadn't heard anything from Sam.
The only message she'd gotten was a text the day after he left.
"I'm here. Met Jennette. Will call later."
And that was it.
She read it over and over in the first few days. Watched her phone like it might buzz just because she willed it to. But no more texts came. No calls. No explanation.
It wasn't like him, she thought to herself.
