I froze.
I didn't know what to do.
My brain did that horrible thing where it tried to convince me this wasn't happening.
For a second, I thought maybe if I stayed completely still, the universe would reverse. Or a truck would run me over. Either option was fine.
My legs were glued to the pavement, and I couldn't move.
Ian got out of the driver's seat and slammed the door. He walked toward me, and leaned against the car.
"I…I'm so sorry," I stammered, already turning to bolt. "I ruined your car. I'll leave now."
"Are you seriously gonna walk around like that?" he asked, grabbing my arm, just enough to stop me. "Okay. Just… chill."
Chill?
I was bleeding. In public. In his car. And this man wanted me to chill?
"I can take the bus, look, there's literally one right there," I said quickly, pointing to the old yellow bus pulling up to the station across the road. My voice cracked. "It's fine. I'll figure it out."
