Chapter 14 - Ep. 4 — Apocalyptic World, III

"Umm… I think we could just walk back…" I said as I twiddled my fingers.

He turned his head swiftly and gave me a stern look.

"Really?" He said sassily.

"What? Is it far?"

He let out a sigh as he dropped his head.

"I mean, if an hour isn't far, then you can walk."

His attitude was patronizing, sounding so much like a know-it-all… Also, how was a piggy back ride going to help us??

I slowly walked over and hesitated, before climbing onto his back… this was sort of embarrassing. I was getting that same butterfly feeling in my stomach from the first time I met him…

He started getting up before he stumbled a bit forward. Now I was even more flustered, was I too heavy? I was about to make a comment, but then I noticed something… blood.

There was some blood dripping onto the ground, was that from me? No… it looked to be coming from his right leg. There was a huge cut going from his knee to his ankle covered in blood. Because it was all smeared around, I couldn't tell how big the cut was. But based on his reaction it was probably pretty big.

"Hey are you alright!" I nervously shouted.

"Yeah… I'll be fine." He sounded somewhat aggressive.

Is that cut what caused him to go berserk against that monster?

Before I could say anything else, I felt his hands tighten around my legs as we both slowly rose a little bit in the air. I looked down and saw that his legs had started transforming. They had become a little longer, and a blackish-purple colour. His shoes were already ripped, but now had fully fallen off as his toes had become more like claws and the hind of his feet had grown an extra claw. His legs also started emitting an aura, similar to mine earlier but much darker.

"Hang tight, if you don't I might drop you." He said as he crouched lower to the ground as if he was charging up.

I nervously grabbed his shoulders a little tighter, but I didn't want to get to close to him as I was already flustered enough… but that didn't last long.

After a couple seconds he bolted forward, and without thinking, I wrapped my arms around his neck and started hugging onto him for dear life… He was going so fast that if I hadn't I would have been blown off. I dug my face into his back to lessen the pain from the wind as he was going anywhere from 40 to 60 miles an hour.

I was starting to get colder and the tall grass whipping against my legs started hurting more and more, especially because they were mostly dead. Luckily, his body was pretty warm as I held onto him, but the pain was a different problem… My pants would have protected me from the grass, but we were going so fast that the grass had started ripping through them. At this point, I don't even believe we were running through grass, but I couldn't open my eyes to see as I'd go blind in an instant from the pressure.

I tried to utter out a sentence to ask him to slow down, but my words left us faster than I could let them out. So many thoughts started rushing into my head as I clenched my teeth, probably to lessen the pain.

Why was I reborn? Why was Lydia killed? Why did Yuri kidnap me? Why did he hate Lunar Labs so much? Why was I trusting him after what he did to me?

After not too much longer, I felt that we were slowing down. I slowly lifted my head and was able to open my eyes safely. It was still windy, but manageable as long as I kept blinking. I could see that we were approaching a city, my city. I noticed that the surrounding bits of the city looked alive, but after that, everything was pretty much dead.

I started to notice that Yuri's breathing was getting louder and he started breathing harder… I couldn't fully see his face, but I could see the side of his face and his cheeks were really red, almost bluish-purple. We started slowing down much faster and I noticed that his legs had slowly started transforming back. I started panicking because it seemed like Yuri was about to faint.

We got closer and closer to the city, and I started noticing buildings that I recognized. I'm pretty sure that one there is my apartment. I loosened my arms and pointed at it to get Yuri's attention, but he was dead focused. I noticed that his grip on me had started to loosen, and we had started going even slower.

He eventually lost grip and I slipped off. Luckily, he had started going so slow that I basically just hopped off. He hadn't noticed, and kept walking forward, so I just slowly followed behind. I'm not sure how long it had taken us to get here, but it probably was an hour… so he really overestimated how fast we could walk here. I chuckled at the thought then realized that Yuri had started becoming more unstable, wobbling around.

I quickly ran in front of him to say we should take a break and noticed that his eyes looked empty. His eye whites had become almost black, he probably transformed them to block the air pressure, but even with that in mind, they looked dead. Why was he pushing himself so hard?

His legs were completely back to normal, which I think happened once I hopped off, but there was still something coming from his right leg… the wound hadn't healed, or it had reopened, causing it to bleed again.

"Yuri! We can take a break! We're probably late anyway, so who cares!" I shouted waving my hand in front of his face.

He just kept walking, and mumbled something that I couldn't hear. I'm pretty sure though that he said something about being late… At this point, we had already basically made it back to the city. We weren't fully in yet, but we were now on some concrete.

There was a lot of blood coming from his leg now, and he had started to leave a blood trail. I was starting to become worried and let out a grunt at his response.

"Come onnn! A small break won't bother anyone, and like I said, we're probably already late, so it doesn't matter."

After he heard this, he started walking faster and started mumbling no. Was he really this worried about being late?? If I'm correct, he doesn't even work there… so why does he care?

I looked back at him and noticed that he had started limping, almost dragging his leg with him. I finally decided to help… which I regret not doing earlier before his leg got this bad.

I walked in front and stopped him.

"Please… stop, you're hurting yourself." I said very serenely, even though I didn't like him for what he did, I still felt bad for him.

He had lost his momentum because of me stopping him, and his eye whites slowly came back as his pupils rolled back and he fainted. He slowly fell forward before I caught him in my arms. He had mumbled something before fainting but I couldn't hear it.

As I caught him, I noticed a tear roll down his cheek. Why was he pushing himself this hard?
