Chapter 3 - My last dinner

BRITTANY'S POV

Everything went blank in my head for a moment as I looked at my so-called boyfriend with another girl, who I thought was my friend.

The fact that I couldn't do such a thing to anyone and how people could think and also put into action dirty behaviors against me, knowing how much it would hurt me but still do it, makes me so sad.

I failed to understand how he could do that to me and how comfortable he was hurting my feelings and how he could lie so much. I wondered if Freya was aware that he wasn't a good guy.

He met my gaze and instantly pulled himself away from Freya and I felt the unexplainable pain that ate up my heart earlier one more time. It was as if my heart would stop beating soon, affecting the way I breathed.

I did not let him see my tears so I walked away as if nothing happened. It all looked so unrealistic, but it was my reality now. It was the life I had to accept as mine. I did not head back home after what I saw. I knew that my family must be looking for me by now but I just needed time for myself.

The next thinG that happened was my family taking me to the king's palace in preparation for my departure, which was the next day.

I had cried all through the night.

When Micheal, my boyfriend came to see me, I refused to see him and was taken straight to the king's palace by my parents.

The king gave me encouraging words, saying that I was doing it for the community and that my sacrifice would make me a legend in the Birch Wood community. He showed me portraits of the girls who had gone to save the community by sacrificing themselves.

Therefore, I had to sit and let the artist draw a picture of me so that I would be among the others whose portraits were on the walls in the palace.

Even though I was distressed by everything that was happening, I stayed for the portrait. I could not cry anymore as I was tired. I had to sit for hours waiting for the artist to finish his job.

It was that night I was leaving the community and accepting my new life in the forest. I could see images of my skin being torn by the fangs of those beasts in my head and it terrifies me every now and then.

I had my last dinner with my family in the king's palace. We all cried our eyes out. I would not believe it if someone told me yesterday morning that I would depart the community and never see my family ever again in just two nights.

This horrifying moment had become my reality! I wept.

The full moon was shining above the whole community. Right outside the forest were the whole community with lanterns. My family wouldn't let me go but I had to be in the forest before midnight and there was just an hour remaining.

Eventually, I had to look back at everyone. I saw my father holding my mother who was crying with every strength she had. My brothers left and my sister was looking at me.

My eyes drifted to Miss Grace, who was also staring at me. Knowing of her betrayal, I looked for Freya who was supposed to be in my shoes and saw her standing with her family.

I couldn't help but envy her for exchanging fate with me. There was nothing I could do but cry.

At some point, I could not look anymore. I faced my new fate as they all told me to and walked into the dark forest but I failed to control the urge of looking back once. And what I saw made me realize how selfish humans could be.

Everyone had begun to turn to go to their various homes. I bet no one could see me because I was already in the dark forest but after sometime when everyone had gone, it was only my family that were still standing.

I looked at my new life in the dark forest that was brightened a little by the full moon. I did not know where destiny would lead me,so all I could do was keep walking like a vagabond.

After trying to hold the pain in as I was tired of sulking and all, I found a place to sit, which was beside a tall tree. I hugged my legs close to my chest, crying. It was all too much for me to take in at once, especially when it kept hitting me that I would never see my family and that my life was about to end.

Suddenly, I heard a strange noise in the forest. When I looked around to know what it was, I saw that it was an insect crawling on the tree and had to walk away as I was the intruder. I couldn't kill something that was right in its home.

Well, I was wrong, that wasn't what was making noise as the noise came closer and as it got more intense I figured out that it was a growling sound.

My heart began to race, causing my pulse to increase. The noise filled my ears and slowly became the only thing I could hear and sense. It made me choke.

I tried to cover my ears with my hands to stop me from listening to the growling but I got too curious and opened my eyes as everything around me didn't feel free. It felt as if something was covering me.

The moment I opened my eyes, I had to drop my hands that were covering my ears because what I saw was beyond my imagination.

Even while trembling, I swallowed hard. They all covered me in a circle, which was right under the moonlight. These beasts were so tall that my height was the height of their legs. Their sharp red eyes were all on me. I was so scared that I froze, but my head was still working.

Everything began to spin in my head as I looked. Their mouths were watering with their gaze fixed on me.

They stopped coming closer but my organs were not functioning anymore. I could not move or do anything. It got to a point where I couldn't think of anything, I was blank and lost until one of them leaped on me.

"Ahhhhhhh!!!" I screamed till I saw nothing but darkness. I had died.
