Episode 41: The Reckoning Protocol

---

The rain poured like a relentless torrent, washing away the blood and ash that stained the war-torn streets. Somewhere deep beneath the city, in an old maintenance tunnel, Julian slammed his fist against a control panel, the rusty metal groaning under the force.

"We're bleeding men," he muttered. "And the mole still walks free."

Lara, wrapped in a thermal cloak and still recovering from her brutal captivity, stepped forward. "Then it's time we stop waiting for them to move. We force their hand."

Julian glanced at her, brow raised.

She held up a microchip—salvaged from the wreckage of the previous raid. "Max didn't just upload data. He left us something else. A backdoor."

Eve looked up from her decryptor. "To what?"

Lara smirked, blood still on her lip. "To Nexus. The real one."

---

In the heart of the city, Lucian stood inside the upper floors of the Nexus Tower, the shimmering skyline a blur behind reinforced glass.

"Reposition satellite surveillance. They're too quiet," he commanded. "I want eyes everywhere."

One of his analysts hesitated. "Sir… one of the dormant protocols is showing activity. Sector 9-B."

Lucian turned sharply. "That tunnel hasn't been accessed in years."

"Until now."

Lucian narrowed his eyes. "Julian... he's going for the Core."

---

Back underground, Carter inserted the chip into an outdated terminal, rerouting decades-old lines of code. Old security lights flickered on, revealing a sealed door that groaned open with a hiss of stale air.

"What the hell is this place?" Reese asked, peering in.

Eve stepped forward. "This was the original Nexus server chamber—before Lucian moved it to the tower. Max knew they'd abandon it… but not wipe it."

Julian's eyes lit with realization. "So we plant the payload here. Ghost Net won't even see it coming."

"Unless the mole tips them off," Carter warned.

---

At that moment, a soft footstep behind them.

They turned—guns drawn.

Dr. Ren stood at the entrance, her hands raised. "Don't shoot. I'm not here to stop you. I'm here because I know who the mole is."

Time froze.

Julian's grip tightened. "Talk."

Dr. Ren hesitated, eyes moving to each of them. "It's someone close. Someone who's been feeding Lucian intel… since before Max died."

Reese's jaw clenched. "Name."

She exhaled. "It's—"

Gunfire tore through the air. Dr. Ren collapsed, blood soaking the ground.

From the shadows, a figure fled.

Julian screamed, "After them!"

---

The chase tore through the tunnels like fire. Eve ducked under collapsing pipes, Carter leapt over debris. The traitor moved fast—too fast.

Julian's eyes narrowed as the silhouette vaulted a broken rail line.

"I know that move…" he whispered. "No… it can't be."

As the figure stumbled into a beam of flickering light, the truth struck like a thunderbolt.

It was Carter's twin brother—Zane. A ghost from the past. Presumed dead.

Eve gasped. "That's your brother?"

Carter's face turned to stone. "Not anymore."
