"Do you want me to come with you?" Adam asked, his voice low, gentle, his dark eyes fixed on Sofia's face like it held the only truth he ever needed.
She paused, her fingers grazing the front of his shirt before settling on the lapels of his coat. His warmth surrounded her, steady and grounding.
"No," she said softly. "I need to do this on my own."
Her voice wavered just a little, but her eyes stayed strong. She took a breath. "And... I'm sorry. For what I said earlier. I shouldn't have blamed you. If I were in your place, and I found out Anne was the daughter of a billionaire..." She smiled faintly, bittersweet. "I don't think I would've known what to do either. I probably would've kept it to myself too."
Adam didn't speak at first. He just tightened his arms around her, pulling her closer until her cheek rested against his chest, over the sound of his heartbeat.
Then he dipped his head and kissed the top of hers, slow and lingering, like he was breathing her in.
