"Nothing is happening between us, I told you already!" Avery shot back, her tone sharper than she intended. The frustration in her voice made Daniala finally raise her hands in surrender and take a step back.
"Alright, alright," Daniala muttered, clearly unconvinced but willing to drop it for now. Her playful smirk lingered though, one that said she'd bring it up again later.
Avery exhaled a long, steady breath, trying to calm her racing heart. Then her attention immediately shifted back to Silas. He still looked pale, the color completely drained from his face.
"Should I drop you home?" she asked softly, walking closer until she stood right in front of him. "I think you should rest instead of attending any more classes today." Her voice carried a gentle firmness, worried yet tender.
Silas looked up at her then, his dark lashes lifting slowly, eyes meeting hers. For a second, his world seemed to slow down. He didn't know what to do with that warmth spreading through his chest.
