Chapter 14 - Escaping

The next "cycle" passed in a blur of hushed planning. Elara had devised a risky, multi-staged distraction, relying on the few scraps they possessed and the guards' predictable patterns. Her target: the main entrance to the cave, the only way in or out.

"Lyra," Elara whispered when the guards' attention seemed solely focused on their fire, "can you reach the edge of the cavern, where the smaller rocks are?" Lyra, being the smallest and most agile, nodded with determined eyes. "Good. Gather as many loose pebbles and small stones as you can, quietly. Don't make a sound."

While Lyra crept silently towards the cavern's edge, Elara turned to Cassian, the older boy. "Cassian, remember how the guards occasionally go deeper into the chamber to check on... whatever they're guarding?" Cassian nodded, still wary but now invested. "When the opportunity arises, and one of them steps away from the fire, you need to create a brief, loud clamor. Nothing prolonged, just enough to draw attention away from the entrance."

Kaelen, despite his broken arm, was given the most crucial task. "Kaelen, your hearing is good. You need to listen for when both guards are truly distracted, looking away from the entrance. That's our window."

The plan was simple, almost laughably so, but it hinged on timing and the guards' underestimation of their captives. They waited. The second cycle of their imprisonment began, and with it, the looming deadline.

Finally, an opportunity presented itself. One guard rose to stretch, grumbling about a draft. The other, engrossed in something near the fire, turned his back to the entrance.

"Now, Lyra!" Elara mouthed, giving a subtle nod.

Lyra, already positioned, began to toss the pebbles she'd gathered, not at the guards, but towards the cave entrance, aiming for the areas where they would echo loudly off the rock. Click. Scrabble. Clatter. The small sounds, magnified in the cave's silence, mimicked the skittering of unseen creatures.

The first guard froze. "What was that?" he muttered, his hand going to the hilt of his crude sword.

His companion by the fire scoffed. "Probably just a cave bat, or a rockfall. Ignore it."

But Elara knew human nature. Curiosity, especially in isolation, was a powerful force. "Again, Lyra! More!" she urged silently.

Lyra, with renewed vigor, sent a flurry of larger stones skittering across the cavern floor towards the entrance. This time, the noise was undeniable. A distinct thump-thump-scrape echoed.

"That's no bat!" the first guard growled, grabbing a torch. "Sounds like something trying to get in!" He started towards the entrance, his focus entirely outward.

Now! Elara signaled to Cassian.

Cassian, with a grunt of effort, reached for the closest discarded metal pot, left from their meager meal, and with surprising force, kicked it hard against a protruding rock. CLANG! The deafening sound reverberated through the cavern, making both guards flinch.

"What in the blazes was that?!" the second guard yelled, startled, spinning towards the sound, his back fully to the main cave entrance. He followed his companion, torch held high, both their attention now fixed on the echoing clamor and the perceived threat from outside.

"Kaelen!" Elara whispered, urgency in her voice.

Kaelen, though pale, had been listening intently. "They're both looking away! They're going out!"

This was it. The moment of truth. Elara's heart hammered against her ribs. She felt the cool metal of the Shield-Ring against her skin, and the Cloaking Mask felt heavy in her belt. "Now!" she commanded, her voice a fierce whisper, "Everyone! To the entrance! Go!"

The small, bruised band of children, fueled by a desperate hope, began to scramble towards the mouth of the cave, their movements clumsy but determined. The echoing roar of the falling pot, and the guards' angry shouts from the deeper cavern, covered their frantic escape. The gate, normally secured by a heavy wooden bar, now stood ajar, as the guards had clearly left in a hurry. The scent of the wild, fresh air, a promise of freedom, beckoned.
