Chapter 37 - Secrets in the Light

The headline read: The Gambino Family is Finished.

He handed the paper back to them and walked home to the apartment where he was staying. He wanted to make a meal for himself and also prepare something for his bodyguard.

Matteo went to the kitchen, brought out everything he bought from the grocery store, turned on the stove, and started cooking spaghetti and meatballs. After the food was ready, he dished it into two plates. He took one to the living room and told his bodyguard to go take the second plate he had left for him.

The bodyguard thanked him for the food and went to his room to eat. After eating, he immediately fell asleep—he was completely exhausted.

Meanwhile, Luna called Lorenzo again.

"They're going to come and meet me. Come to my house," Luna said on the phone.

"Hell no, I can't do that. People will start wondering why I'm going to your house. The boss will be suspicious because he didn't tell me to come. And besides, what do you want? Why do you want me to come there?" Lorenzo replied.

"I want you to give me all the information you know regarding my husband's situation. But never mind coming to my house. Let's meet at the café near my place," Luna said, then hung up the phone.

She had just woken up and immediately went to take a bath again. Her breath felt a little off, so she brushed her teeth once more. She dressed casually since she was only meeting Lorenzo to talk about her husband's situation—and to find out whether there was anything she could do to help.

As soon as she was dressed, Luna went to wait for Lorenzo at the café near her house. After waiting a little while, Lorenzo arrived.

"Hey, you just called me out of the blue to come meet you, like I don't have any standards. I'm as big as your husband, if you don't know—when it comes to status. So you need to give me some respect," Lorenzo said.

"Just shut up. What respect? You're a pig. You don't deserve any respect from me," Luna snapped.

Lorenzo stared at her. "So now, what do you want to know? I already told you everything I know."

"I think you said it wasn't just a fight—that there might be more. Am I right? I want to know how to use a gun. I want to have a gun so I can protect my husband," Luna said.

"What? What do you mean by that? Hell no. Never. You can't have that. If anything happens to you, you're finished. Not just you—me too. I'll also be finished, because Matteo will know I gave you a gun. And even if he doesn't know right away, he'll figure it out. He's smart. And when he finds out—reason or not—I don't think he'll spare me," Lorenzo said.

"I need it to protect myself—from a lot of things. If I'm going to keep helping him, even just a little, I need something. There might be situations I can't escape from. I might need a gun," Luna insisted.

"It looks like you don't understand what I'm trying to tell you. What if Matteo finds out? If he does, I'm doomed. So, no. Never. You don't need that. I don't even know what you're doing anymore. All you need to do is be a good housewife. Stay inside. Your husband is rich—he'll give you as much money as you want. You don't need to work or get involved in anything dangerous," Lorenzo said.

"Yeah, I don't need to work. But still—the man I want to build a family with, the man I want to have children with—is in the Mafia. And you're telling me I shouldn't care? I have to care. The day he's no longer in the Mafia, then I'll worry less. But for now, I need a gun," Luna said firmly.

"You can't get a gun now. I'll try. Maybe next week I'll find something to give you," Lorenzo said reluctantly.

"No problem. And I also want you to tell me more about Matteo. You once told me he's strong enough to defeat different types of people. But did he actually do it?" Luna asked.
