They were in the prime of youth—emotion at its fullest, blood burning hot, eager to do something big and be admired by countless people.
You can't expect a group of teenage kids to see through the world like an old monk.
Just like Anakin's tragedy, Amir remembered three key things.
The first was his mother's death. Crushing guilt and rage swallowed him. He lost control for the first time, and under the push of fury he took revenge—slaughtering an entire Tusken Raider tribe. The seed of the dark side was already planted in his heart then. More than that, he felt unwilling to accept his own weakness—his inability to save his mother. That bred a hunger for power, and fear of death took root in his mind. Afterward, Padmé's love pulled him back out of grief.
The second was his relationship with Padmé. The affair itself was clandestine and violated the Jedi Order's doctrine. And after he foresaw Padmé dying in childbirth, the fear buried by his mother's death resurfaced. He was terrified of losing Padmé. Once again, he wasn't strong enough. He couldn't control life and death. So the hunger for power and the fear of death and loss pinned him down, leaving him helpless.
The third was how the Jedi Order treated Anakin. After foreseeing Padmé's death, Anakin still trusted the Jedi. He went to Master Yoda first for help—but Yoda didn't recognize the agony in his spirit, and instead told him to follow the Force and accept what must be. Combined with the surveillance assignment targeting Chancellor Palpatine, and the bizarre decision to grant Anakin the title of Master without real authority, Anakin's trust in the Order sank to its lowest point. That was when the Sith Lord slipped in, and Anakin's fall into the dark side became inevitable.
Based on Anakin's story, Amir kept asking himself: was emotion truly the reason he fell?
Amir didn't believe so. It mattered, but it was not decisive.
First, it was Anakin's personality. He was too impulsive, too emotional. He always acted according to his own will, often disobeying the Jedi Order's commands, trusting his feelings and acting on them. That kind of behavior already leaned toward Sith ideology.
Second, it was Anakin's catastrophic life experience. His mother's death left a deep obsession inside him. When he saw the premonition of Padmé's death, he fell into fear—an unavoidable fear for anyone. In that fear, he lost confidence and began grasping blindly for any solution, until he finally treated the Sith's temptation like a lifeline and plunged into the abyss.
Third, it was the Jedi Order's inaction. If Yoda and Obi-Wan had listened to his pain, explained the limits of Force visions, helped him plan and prepare for the possible tragedy—instead of standing above him and telling him to accept it—then Anakin, still loyal to the Order and deeply trusting Obi-Wan and Yoda, would have felt his fear reduce. He would have been far less likely to be deceived by Sidious's temptation. Even without "bringing the dead back," he would have believed that with the full support of the Jedi Order, Padmé could give birth safely.
So was emotion really that dominant a factor?
In Amir's view, emotion was only a fuse—hardly the primary cause. There were countless chances along the way to prevent the tragedy, yet each time the correct choice was missed. The simplest path could have avoided disaster, but through cruel coincidences the situation became unstoppable. Sidious's scheme, Anakin's stubbornness, and the Jedi Order's failures were far more powerful than emotion's influence.
In fact, Anakin's love for Padmé was what pulled him back from darkness after his mother's death.
And Qui-Gon's experience, too—his love for Tahl was precisely what stopped him at the threshold of the dark side. And there was no need to mention the future moment when Luke Skywalker faced Darth Vader: it was the profound bond between father and son that redeemed Vader from the deepest abyss, returning him to the light, fulfilling the Chosen One prophecy, and restoring balance to the galaxy.
Life is interesting because of emotion. Jedi are compelling because of emotion. Emotion should not be denied.
That was what Amir had always believed. Maybe with time he would move closer to Master Yoda's state of mind—but for now, his view wouldn't change.
Since emotion cannot be completely discarded—and it isn't an absolute weakness that guarantees a fall—Amir would rather accept it and control it.
So in this experience, Amir clearly felt his anger, yet he also deliberately provoked it, releasing dark side power and taking forbidden strength. Through the whole process, he knew his purpose. He knew the dark side was just a tool he intended to use. And once the anger faded, Amir knew he no longer needed that power—so the darkness dispersed like smoke.
Qui-Gon had watched the whole thing. He had seen the entire arc of Amir's Force shifting, seen the switches in his emotional state, and seen Amir's resolve when death was right in front of him.
That was why Qui-Gon had asked Amir whether he could sense his emotional changes.
If you can sense it, you can control it.
In truth, when Qui-Gon asked, he already had his answer.
Amir had been conscious from beginning to end.
Obi-Wan finally understood what Qui-Gon meant. He asked in surprise, "You're saying Amir's awareness and control of emotion is extremely strong—that he can keep his core intact even while using the dark side?"
Qui-Gon didn't answer. He looked at Amir.
"More or less," Amir said after thinking. "I could feel the dark side trying to stir darker emotions in me, but it was weaker than I expected. My head hurt, but I resisted. I don't think I was affected."
"You remind me of Master Mace Windu," Obi-Wan said, impressed. "He was an extraordinarily powerful Jedi, with tremendous control over his emotions. He used Vaapad—Form VII. That form can amplify a fighter's strength by embracing the thrill of combat. It comes close to the dark side, but Windu could remain untouched by it because his control was so strong—he could take it up and set it down at will."
Obi-Wan looked less worried now. Since Qui-Gon had confirmed Amir was fine, Obi-Wan chose to believe it.
Qui-Gon gave one final warning. "Do not become careless. The easiest mistake to make when facing the dark side is believing you can control it completely."
"I know," Amir replied seriously.
The late-night discussion ended. With Qui-Gon's help, Amir finally understood his true condition more clearly.
Just as they were about to rest, a familiar comm call came through.
Amir glanced down.
Huh—an old acquaintance.
A fat sheep.
The Traveler itself had come from that guy. Who knew what new scheme this old coin-hoarder had cooked up now, calling out of nowhere.
A white squid-faced head appeared in front of Amir.
"You got darker, Amir," Seneir said with a sleazy grin that somehow felt familiar in the worst way. "Don't tell me you left comfortable Coruscant and ran to Tatooine to suffer, heh."
"What is it? Suddenly remembered me—something good?" Amir asked.
"I've heard that the last couple days, someone's been smashing Pyke operations," Seneir said bluntly. "If I'm not mistaken, that should be one of your people. I remember the name… Kain."
