Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

Katherine held on to Violet as she slides through the traffic of the busy road. Violet was barely keeping up with her mother's pace her tiny legs were aching.

"Mother slow down I am getting worn-out." Violet sonorous voice echoes with a mix of tiredness laced in it. "I am going to be late to school anyway." The five year old rolled her eyes and frowned obviously unpleased with the way things were going.

Katie heard what she said and simply accelerated her pace. It was like this every morning when Violet had to go to school. Violet was already used to it, at first she used to complain and rant on about how late she was to school every day.

But soon she got accustomed to it, she no longer cared if she got to school late. But that wasn't the case for Katherine, she was trying her best to get Violet to school early.

She wakes up early, do some chores, then prepares breakfast, then she gets Violet ready for school. Today she will wake up by 6am, tomorrow it will be by 5am, sometimes it was 7am. It all depends on the time she arrives from work.

Winnie was always ready to offer a helping hand, when ever she did Violet was always early to school. But recently Winnie has been busy with work, she barely even has time for herself.

It got to a point Violet questioned Katie one-day asking her the nature of the job.

"Mummy what do you do for a living." Violet had suddenly walked up to her with a book and a pencil in her hand. The little girl had just finished her assignment, immediately she saw her mother coming she remembered the question she had promised to ask her.

She wanted to know why her mother always arrived late most nights, most times she was even asleep by the time Katie returned home.

Katie was simply embarrassed by her question. How could she tell her daughter she was a waitress at a five star restaurant?

She imagined Violet telling her classmates her mother is a waitress. The thought of it made her shrieked. Other students probably had parents with lucrative jobs, but hers was just pathetic.

Katie had managed to change the topic by showing Violet the box of chocolate she had gotten for her on her way coming from work.

Violet was overjoyed and simply took the box of chocolate leaving her mother to her thoughts. That night Katie became restless, Violet's question continued to replay in her head like some kind of sick song.

She was always so worked up and exhausted. She barely got enough time to sleep before the dawn of a new day. Just to make things worse her daughter was a chatterbox, she blabbers all sort of nonsense which always leaves Katie with a headache by the end of the day.

That was just one of the few things that makes Violet difficult to handle, but apart from that this girl was a genius. Always coming first place in her class, a well behaved student who has received a lot of awards from her school, Katie was proud of her.

Today was one of those days Katie woke up by 7am, Violet was extremely late for school and the traffic jam didn't make things easier.

"Come on Violet keep up." Katie suddenly felt she was putting in a lot more effort dragging Violet along with her, which was quite unusual. She turned around and saw that Violet was pointing at a ice cream shop just across the street.

"Mum I want some ice cream." Violet said, smacking her pink rosy lips as her gaze was fixed on the ice cream shop across the street.

"It's too early for some ice cream Violet, when you get back from school I promise Winnie will take you out for some ice cream okay? Katie said trying to cajole Violet but the little girl wasn't listening.

"No mum, I want it now! I want it! I want it! She kept screaming and her hand slowly loosened from Katie's grip, Katie gazed at her daughter looking annoyed.

"Violet, do you want me to spank you? Katie threatened. The little one was almost in tears, she turned away from the direction of the ice cream shop.

"Mummy look out! Violet screamed tugging at her mother's gown. Katie ignored Violet thinking she was just fascinated by another restaurant or toy shop.

But soon she heard a loud screech…."Mum!

Katie turned around and saw that Violet was on the ground. Her heart missed a beat as she quickly made her way to where Violet was on the ground.

"Oh my goodness are you okay? Katie was almost in tears, how could she have been so irresponsible?

Leaving a child to wander alone, she didn't know when Violet snatched her hand from her grip. Katie checked around Violet's body for any sign of injury but she found none, she sighed in relief and helped Violet back to her feet.

Violet only had a small bruise on her knees, it was nothing serious but Katie's face was already as red as a tomato. She turned to the direction of the car that had just hit Violet….

"Mister, are you blind! She shot the driver a deadly glare, she could see him through the windscreen of the car.

The driver had obviously seen that he had hit a child but he didn't even step out of the car to check up on the person he almost ran over, this fueled Katie's anger.

The driver saw that Katie refused to move away from his path, he became confused. The driver was thankful that he had not hit the girl, he had pushed the brakes just before the car could get to where Violet was.

The car was only an inch away from Violet when it stopped, but Violet was simply petrified, she fell down in agitation when she saw the car coming in full speed and thought that the car was going to run her over.

"Madam, get out of the way." The driver popped his head out of the window and blared the horn of the car.

Katie was furious…."All you wealth people know how to do is drive flashy cars and get people killed." She cursed under her breath.

The truth was that it was actually Katie's fault. The traffic jam had suddenly cleared off, and the traffic light which was red suddenly turned green, that was a signal that the cars could move freely.

Already pedestrians who were walking on the same path with her were already gone, she got delayed by Violet's unreasonable want for ice cream.

Leonard was seated at the back of the sit discussing some business matters with his personal assistant Fred. The black Limousine had a screen that separated the front from the back seat, so he couldn't see what was happening.

After a while he realized that the car had not moved, he pressed a button and the screen separating the front from the back seat wined down slowly.

"Driver, why is the car not moving? He questioned calmly.

"Sir there is a woman in front of the car…", The driver was fidgeting, his sentence was cut short, he didn't want to upset his boss.

"Did you hit someone? Leonard brows shot up, he was trying to take a good guess and it better not be that his driver almost got someone killed.

"No sir of course not." The driver quickly responded to his question. For years he has earned a good reputation as a well respected driver. He earned his license and graduated from driving school. He was only assigned to high rank families and for years he has delivered his service without any complaint.

The driver was aware that getting into trouble with his boss could cost him his job. He could be thrown in jail and rot there for eternity, so he has always been careful when driving.

"I will go and take a look." Fred said, making for the handle of the door.

"Don't." Leonard said, adjusting his chiffon suit jacket. "I know how to handle this category of women, they can go to any length to gain attention from wealthy men." Leonard said, reaching for the handle of the car.

"Don't move." He commanded Fred who was about to stop him from stepping out.

"How could his boss converse with commoners? Fred dreaded in his thoughts and watched as Leonard stepped out of the car.

Katie simply dust off some dirt from Violet's uniform and picked up her lunchbox from the ground; it had faltered from Violet's hand when she fell.

She glanced at her wristwatch and gasped….it was almost 8am. She held onto Violet and was about to leave when she saw a young handsome man making his way to her.

Katie's eyes became fierce, she had guessed that he must be the owner of the flashy car. Her blood boiled with exasperation.

Leonard stopped in front of Katie and was about to open his mouth to warn her to stay clear of his path, but she didn't give him the chance to say anything before walking past him while dragging Violet along with her.

Leonard was stunned, he languishly turn

ed around and gazed at Katie but he soon heard her curse out loudly.

 "Go to hell!
