Chapter 79 - Chapter 79: Who Wants to Live Forever?

Draco steps through the fireplace at Malfoy Manor, Voldemort is standing there when he does. Draco quickly kneels, "my lord."

"Do you have news for me?" Voldemort asks.

"Yes, the Potters are expecting another child." Draco answers.

"When is the mudblood due?" Voldemort asks.

"Mid-April."

"Yes, we can use that." Voldemort says. "I have a new task for you. Deep in Hogwarts, on the seventh floor exists a room that can be whatever you want it to be. If you go there and think about the fact you need a place to hide something you should find a room that has a vanishing cabinet. Your task is to fix that cabinet before the mudblood goes into labor."

"It shall be done."

#####

Hermione opens her eyes and looks at the daggers in Amanda's hands. "A room where things are hidden, can it be that simple?" Hermione asks herself.

"Cus, are you okay?" Amanda asks.

"I need to do something." Hermione answers.

"Can I help?" Amanda asks

"Sure, get Harry, tell him to bring my bag to the Room of Requirement, I'll meet you there." Hermione says then gets up and leaves.

#####

Amanda and Harry approach the Room of Requirement, as they do they see the door wide open and Hermione standing in the hall. They both look inside the room and see rows upon rows of miscellaneous junk. "Looks like people have been using this room to hide stuff since Hogwarts has opened." Harry says.

"Yes, that's precisely what I thought too." Hermione says. "My bag!"

Amanda hands Hermione her bag. "What are you thinking?" Amanda asks.

Hermione pulls the phylactery out of her bag. "Calidum aut frigidum." She reaches into the room with the gem in her hand. "It's this way." She leads them through the room, repeating the spell every so often. Finally, she stops. "It's close, very close."

They all look around. "I bet that's it." Harry says pointing. They all look to see what he's pointing at.

"Ravenclaw's diadem." Hermione says with a disgruntled sigh. "I should have known."

=== Flashback ===

Harry and Hermione walk up to the entrance to the Ravenclaw common room. The ghost of Helena floats through the door. "Are you coming to see me?" She asks.

"Yes, we have a problem." Hermione says. "Your mother's grimoire is doing something to me."

"Meet me by the Slytherin common room." Helena says as she floats through the floor.

Confused Harry and Hermione look at each ot1her. "Guess we better hurry." Harry says.

With a heavy sigh Hermione nods in agreement. When they reach the door to the Slytherin common room the spirit sees them. "About time," Helena says before floating off.

They hurry to catch up with the spirit who leads them to an empty room. "Helena, where are you taking us?" Hermione asks.

"We're almost there." Helena answers as she floats to one of the walls and puts her hand through one of the stones. "Press the stone I phased through.

Harry walks over and pushes on the stone, to his surprise it actually gives and the wall opens up and reveals a large iron door attached to iron bars, the room beyond is pitch black. "A hidden cell?"

"It's about time." A woman's voice says from inside the cell. They all remain silent as they watch a very pale woman with long black hair and cobalt blue eyes appear at the bars. "You should have come to free me ages ago."

"Free you?" Hermione asks.

"You're still coherent?" The woman asks, clearly surprised.

"What are you talking about?" Hermione asks, "and who are you?"

"I'm Helena's grandmother." She answers.

Hermione gasps. "This is a spirit cage!"

"Very good, just as smart as my daughter was, and just as gullible."

Harry looks at Hermione and sees the grimoire in her hand. "Mione!"

Hermione looks down and drops the book as if it was on fire. "I didn't summon it."

"No, I did." The spirit says. "After all it was mine, and will be again."

"What are you talking about?" Harry asks.

"Surely you must have felt it by now, the pull of the grimoire to keep using it." The spirit says.

"Yes, I would be lost to it if not for our soul bond." Hermione admits.

"Ah, that's why the book hasn't taken you over yet." The spirit says.

"You mean like Riddle's journal did to Ginny?" Harry asks.

"Close enough, except I will be taking her body." The spirit says.

"No! Never!" Hermione says.

"It's too late, you're already addicted to the book." The spirit taunts.

"Why would you do this to your descendant?" Harry asks.

"Isn't it obvious? I want to live forever." The spirit answers. "Unlike Riddle though I embraced the fact I was going to die and made it so my spirit would remain ever tethered to the mortal realm."

"Who are you?" Harry asks.

"You haven't figured it out yet?" The spirit chuckles.

They both shake their heads. Helena floats down in front of them. "Grandmother is the great Morgan le Fay."

"I'll stop using the book." Hermione says.

"How long do you think you can resist?" Morgan laughs. "Even if you do, there's always your daughters."

"You will not lay one spectral finger on them!" Hermione growls as she launches herself at the cell only for Harry to stop her.

"She can't hurt anyone right now." Harry says.

"For now." Morgan says. "Nothing can hold me forever."

Harry pulls Hermione out of the room, the wall closes up as they leave. "I'm sorry." Helena says as she floats nearby. "I wanted to warn you, but she has some control over me."

"How are you telling us now?" Hermione asks.

"I think she let me go for now, she doesn't th1ink I'm a threat." Helena explains, "but I know something she doesn't know."

"What's that?" Harry asks

"My mother found a way around the grimoire's addictive magic and used it to create the prison Morgan is in now" Helena explains. "Her lost diadem is the key."

=== Present===

"It's been here in Hogwarts the whole time." Hermione says in awe as she reaches out to take the diadem.

"Mione, stop!" Harry says as he grabs her.

"But it's the key to end all of this." Hermione says

"It's a horcrux, there's no telling what would happen if you put it on." Harry says.

"I don't care." Hermione says as she struggles against Harry.

"Amanda, grab it!" Harry

Amanda conjures a bag then levitates the diadem into it. "Now what?"

"Get it to Professor McGonagall," Harry orders "Tell her to put it in the null box."

"Got it!" Amanda says as she runs off.

As soon as Amanda leaves the room Hermione stops struggling. "Mione?" Harry asks.

"I'm okay now." Hermione responds weakly.

"Good, I was worried for a minute." Harry says. "Once Amanda gets back I'm going to take the diadem to the goblins."

"They can't damage it in any way." Hermione says.

Harry nods. "I know."

A few minutes later Amanda comes back. "Professor McGonagall wants you in her office, Harry." She says pointing to him. "Hermione, I'm supposed to take you up to see the nurse."

#####

Harry enters McGonagall's office. "Amanda says you wanted to see me?" He asks.

"How is your wife?" McGonagall asks.

"She's shaken, I think the diadem has a compulsion on it aimed at the Ravenclaw line." Harry answers.

"Yes, nobody else seems to want to put it on." McGonagall says.

"May I take it to the goblins?"

"By all means." McGonagall says handing him the box.

#####

Harry steps through the flames into the lobby of Gringotts, carrying the Null Box. He walks up to the counter. "Can you please tell Sharptooth that Harry Potter needs to see him urgently?" He asks.

"Sure," the teller laughs. "Go sit on the bench." He goes to the back to pass on the message.

Harry goes and sits on the bench, it's not long before Sharptooth comes into the lobby and comes up to him. "Mister Potter, this had better be important, we don't like being summoned like this."

Harry pats the box. "I got the one that was in Hogwarts."

Sharptooth glares at the box. "Now I'm glad you summoned me. Come quickly."

Harry quickly gets up, grabs the box and follows Sharptooth. They enter a room with a group of goblins all armed with several blades and walk up to a table. "Put it here." Sharptooth commands.

Harry opens up the box and unceremoniously turns it upside down onto the table. "Be careful, it has some kind of compulsion charm on it." He says as he pulls the box away leaving the diadem sitting on the table.

Sharptooth carefully examines the diadem. "There's layers of charms on this."

"Can you remove only the compulsion charm and the soul fragment?" Harry asks.

"I don't know." Sharptooth answers.

"I'm begging you to try," Harry says. "The magic in that diadem is important."

Sharptooth nods. "You have my word, we'll do what we can."

"Thank you, Sharptooth."

#####

"I see no lasting effects from the compulsion charm." Pomphrey tells Hermione.

"Am I free to go?" Hermione asks.

"Yes." Pomphrey answers.

Hermione gets up and leaves the infirmary. "Where are you going?" Amanda asks.

"We need to talk to Professor McGonagall." Hermione says.

They get to McGonagall's office and walk in. "Missus Potter, I'm glad to see you're doing well." McGonagall says.

"Thank you," Hermione says. "We have important information for you."

"I already sent Mister Potter to Gringotts with the diadem." McGonagall says.

"Yes, and that's the next to last one." Hermione says. "Riddle keeps the other on him."

"That makes sense."

"In other news, our spy has informed us that he's going to attack Hogwarts, he wants to do it before I go into labor." Hermione says.

"We can't have that." McGonagall says. "Students could get hurt."

"Our spy seems to think Riddle will come, with the final horcrux." Amanda says.

McGonagall's eyes go wide. "You mean to end this, here in Hogwarts?"

"It would make sense." Amanda says.

"What if we make escape plans?" Hermione suggests. "There's all kinds of tunnels out of Hogwarts, remember the map I showed you in my third-year?"

McGonagall nods. "Bring me the map again, and we'll discuss this with the Headmaster. Will we know when they are going to strike?"

"Probably only an hour or so before the attack." Hermione admits.

"That's not a lot of time to evacuate students, especially since we couldn't tell them the plan ahead of time." McGonagall says.

"Let's discuss all the options with the Headmaster and Amelia Bones." Hermione says.
