Harry gets up extra early so he can get downstairs before Hermione. After a quick shower and fresh clothes he comes downstairs carrying her present. He sits on their couch and waits for her.
Hermione comes down shortly afterwards. "Hey Babe, have you been waiting long?"
Harry shakes his head. "It's hard to get up before you."
"Sorry, extra classes mean extra hours."
"You're not overwhelmed are you?" Harry asks.
"Maybe a little, but Divination and Muggle Studies are both jokes so far so it's not too bad."
"If you're not learning anything you should drop the classes."
"We'll see it's still only the first month.
Harry nods. "I got up early for a reason." He hands her the present. "Happy Birthday."
Hermione opens up the present only to find a book. "'Hogwarts a History? You know I already have this book."
Harry smiles as he opens the book to a bookmarked page. "New edition, I thought you might like this chapter."
Hermione reads the book.
The Chamber of Secrets
Legend says that Salazar Syltherin made this Chamber so his descendants could one day fulfill his dream of ridding the school of muggleborn students.
For centuries the Chamber was considered just that, a legend. Then during the 1942 - 1943 school year the Chamber was opened. The unfortunate result of this was the untimely passing of a student by the name of Myrtle Warren. Who now haunts the bathroom she died in and is colloquially referred to as Moaning Myrtle.
After Miss Warren's death the Chamber was closed until the 1992 - 1993 school year the Chamber was opened and the monster inside set free.
A student by the name of Hermione Granger did what nobody before her could, she figured out the location of the entrance to the Chamber. She also figured out the monster Slytherin left behind was a basilisk. The basilisk would later be killed by another student, the famous boy-who-lived, Harry Potter.
Hermione looks up at Harry. "We're in a book?"
"We're in your favorite book." Harry says.
"Oh my God! This is amazing!" Hermione exclaims as she hugs Harry. "This is the best birthday ever!"
Harry hugs her back. "I wanted to make sure this year was special for you."
Hermione nods. "My last birthday as Hermione Granger."
"But everybody will remember your name, even long after you've taken mine."

Harry and Hermione are sitting on their usual couch reading when Ron comes up to them. "I'm going to ask Lavender to Hogsmeade."
"Took you long enough." Hermione says. "You lost that bet a month ago."
"Sorry." Ron says.
"You're a Gryffindor, you shouldn't be afraid of asking Lavender out." Harry says.
Ron laughs. "I'm not scared of that, I'm pretty sure she'll say yes. I just really don't feel right taking your money for the date."
"Ron, sit." Harry says and Ron does. "Ron, you are the first friend I ever had. You're like a brother to me. So look at me like one of your brothers. Would you take money from one of your brothers?"
"I'd want to know what the catch was." Ron says.
"No catch." Harry says. "And I'm not going to give you money all the time. I just want you and Lavender to have a good time."
Ron nods. "I know. I just...I still don't feel right taking the money."
"Then a loan." Hermione says. "I'll keep track of every knut you borrow. You can repay whenever you repay."
"I can work with that." Ron says as gets up and finds Lavender looking at a magazine, he walks over to her.
Lavender sees Ron come over to her out of the corner of her eye, she pretends to be reading her magazine for just a few moments to see what he does. When he just quietly waits she puts the magazine down. "Oh, hi Ron." She says as if she just realized he was there.
"Hi Lav, I was wondering if you'd like to go to Hogsmeade with me?" Ron asks.
"You mean as a date?" Lavender asks.
"Yes."
"I thought you'd never ask!" Lavender exclaims as she gets up and hugs him.
While they are hugging Loki contacts Hermione. 'Mum.'
'Yes Sweetness?' Hermione replies.
'I think I've watched enough.' Loki says. 'The rat seems oddly fascinated with the girl's teets."
Hermione feels herself blush, and hopes nobody in the common room notices. 'From my understanding that's a common human male fascination.'
'Dad!' Loki sends, jolting Harry. 'Mum says fascination with the female teets is common for a human male, is this true?'
Harry looks at Hermione and blushes. Hermione's eyes widen as she whispers. "Loki?" Harry nods as Hermione stifles a giggle.
Finally Harry manages a reply. 'I would say it's fairly common.'
'So you want to play with Mum's?'
'That's none of your business.'
'Okay.' Loki says then sends Hermione. 'I think Dad wants to play with your teets, you should let him.'
Hermione is very glad she's not drinking anything as she would have spit it out if she had. 'Loki, what me and your father do is our business, not yours."
'Okay!'
'Now, are we ready for the next part of the plan?' Hermione asks.
'Yes, I think I know his behaviors well enough.'
'That's a good girl.'
===October 10 1993===
"Are you sure about this?" Harry asks Hermione as they sit in the library.
Hermione nods. "I know it's a gamble telling Professor McGonagall, but we need to limit his options of escape."
Harry hands her the map. "Try and bring it back."
Hermione nods and kisses his cheek before heading out in the direction of the bathrooms. She ducks into an alcove, then activates her time turner for its maximum 4 hours.
Once she's been thrown back in time she disillusions herself and watches as her group of friends, including her past self walk past the alcove and into the library.
Once the group is past she releases the disillusionment and walks to McGonigall's office knocking when she gets there. "Come in." McGonagall says. Hermione enters her office. "Miss Granger, I thought you were on your way to the library with your friends."
"I am." Hermione says as she steps up to the desk. "I need you to promise to keep what I'm about to show you a complete secret."
"I'll do my best, but remember I have a magical oath to the school first." McGonagall says.
"I'll take what I can get." Hermione says as she pulls The Marauders Map from her robes. "I solemnly swear I'm up to no good." She holds the activated map up for McGonagall to see.
"My word, I've never seen anything like that." McGonagall says, amazed.
"If you'd look at the second year Gryffindor Girls dorms you'll see a name that doesn't belong." Hermione says.
McGonagall looks. "Peter Pettigrew? Impossible, he's dead! What kind of joke is this?"
"It's not. " Hermione answers. "Peter Pettigrew is an unregistered animagus, his form is a common rat. You'd recognize him as Ron and Ginny's pet rat Scabbers."
McGonagall digests this information as she sees Peter Pettigrew is right on top of Ginerva Weasley on the map. Bile rises in her throat as thinks about Peter, even as a rat molesting one of her students. "We need to remove him immediately."
"While I can't argue the point, we need to do so in a way that doesn't harm Ginny." Hermione says. "The events of last year have left scars on her."
McGonagall sighs. "So telling her the truth is out, that's for sure."
"Exactly!" Hermione says. "Let me tell you my plan."
#####
McGonagall steps into the Gryffindor common room carrying a pet carrier, Loki lays inside looking very sick. "May I have your attention please." The room gets quiet. "I need all students down here, we have one sick pet and we need to quarantine all pets until we know for sure it's not contagious."
She pulls out her wand and starts transfiguring objects into pet carriers. One by one the Gryffindor students give her their pets. Ginny comes up last. "Scabbers doesn't seem sick."
"It's just a precaution." McGonagall says. "Every pet should be back by the end of the day."
Ginny nods as she kisses Scabbers then puts him in the cage. "Bye, Scabbers.'"
"Is that every pet?" McGonagall asks and when the students nod she waves her wand levitating all the carriers behind her she returns to her office.
"Now, how do we not traumatize her?" McGonagall asks.
"Unfortunately, we can't completely avoid trauma but we can minimize it." Hermione says. "We make a magical rat that Loki partially controls, thanks to her magical collar she can also turn invisible at will. Over the next couple weeks she'll have the rat do less and less. They'll assume it's getting old, so the trauma won't be as bad."
"Loki will have to be with whomever has the rat." McGonagall says.
'Not necessarily, Malachi made this stone that he tied to a sick rat so it would copy how it moves and such."
"Malachi just happened to have a sick rat?" McGonagall asks.
"I know I thought the same thing. Because of the need to get Scabbers away from Ginny I decided not to look into it." Hermione explains. "Now Malachi also made the stone so Loki can add behaviors to the rat so it seems more like Scabbers. I thought about using a regular rat, but I was afraid Ginny would catch on if it acted differently."
McGonagall nods. "Very well, let's do this."
Hermione pulls out a stone covered in runes. "This needs to be inside of it."
McGonagall takes the stone l and transfigures in and a few things into a rat identical to Scabbers. Immediately it scours to an empty cage.
"Now," Hermione says, grabbing the cage that has the real rat. "We can deal with him."
McGonagall throws some powder into the fireplace. "Amelia Bones, Professor McGonagall requests your presence post haste."
A few minutes later Amelia comes through the fireplace. "Professor, this had better be important. I'm leading a man hunt trying to find Sirius Black."
"I have evidence that you're tracking down an innocent man." McGonagall says.
"What evidence is that?" Amelia asks.
McGonagall motions to the cage. "Meet Peter Pettigrew, unregistered animagus!"
"Professor, that's an ordinary rat." Amelia says.
"That's his animagus form." Hermione says.
Amelia almost asks what Hermione is doing then, but then remembers who she is and sighs. "Fine, I'll play along since I'm already here, but if this is a prank you're both going to regret this." She pulls her wand out and carefully levitates the cage to the middle of the room.
Hermione and McGonagall pull out their wands. Loki looks ready to pounce. "Perhaps I should make the cage bigger." McGonagall says.
"I got it." Hermione says as she carefully makes the cage big enough to house a human but the openings are too small for the now panicking rat to get out.
"You want me to cast the spell now?" McGonagall asks.
"No, we follow procedure. I'll cast it." Amelia says. Then casts the animagus reversal spell, a blue light comes from her wand, and hits the rat quickly restoring him to his human form. Amelia sighs as she recognizes Peter Pettigrew. "That certainly changes things." She says with a sigh.
Peter looks around. "What happened, where am I?"
"Mister Pettigrew, you're in my office in Hogwarts." McGonagall says.
"What? No way, I was in London." Peter says. "Sirius attacked me. How did I end up here?"
"You can come with me and we'll find out.' Amelia says as he opens up the cage. As soon as Peter steps forward Amelia snaps a pair of magic blocking handcuffs on him.
"Hey, what is this?" Peter says.
"A precaution," Amelia says. "Since it appears like you are an unregistered animagus."
"Wait, I have rights!" Peter says.
"Actually, you're listed as dead, so until you've been thoroughly questioned, no you don't." Amelia says as she drags him to the fireplace and they vanish.
