Chapter 1 - Bloodline awakens

Chiko Zawa was nothing special, or so he thought, born to two civilian shinobi, he had been taught since he was young, much like the clan kids, only there were no Hiden for him to inherit. All he got was regular old jutsu and chakra control exercises. He was on par with the clan kids when it came to the academy three and he even knew a few c rank techniques but he never thought he would make it to some big important role, like the anbu, no, his life was destined for above average. That is until he one day cut himself whilst training with his parents. It was a small cut, barely enough to draw blood. It had happened more times than he could count but what was different was that something within him just clicked. He stared at the small cut on his arm, watching the crimson liquid slowly bead across the fine line.

He formed a seal, the same used for the clone jutsus, as if possessed by something, not really in control and the drops of crimson life juice slowly began swirling in a circular pattern and, within half a second, in a puff of red mist, a clone of his stood there, its surprise just as evident as his' and his parents.

His father, Kyo Zawa, slowly approached the clone and poked it with his kunai.

"Ouch! What was that for?!" The clone asked.

"It is… coporial…" Kyo looked from the clone to the original and back, "I haven't taught you any elemental clone techniques yet and that blood… we have to go to the hospital! If what I assume is right… this could be big"

"What are you thinking, dear?" Chiko's mother, Mina Zawa looked at her husband, "what was all that?"

"Dear, I- I suspect our son has awakened a kekkei genkai. The way he used blood… the only normal jutsu I can think of that requires blood is summoning and sealing jutsu and that was neither of them"

"Could it really be? I knew our son was special, keeping up with the clan kids way better than we could at his age but- but a new kekkei genkai?", Mina asked, looking both proud and worried.

"What's a kekkei genkai?" Chiko was confused. He hadn't heard that word before. So, he looked to his parents for guidance, like he always did. They were always there for him when he needed it.

"A kekkei genkai, or bloodline limit, is a DNA anomaly that allows its user to use unique techniques. Kekkei genkai are not something one learns but is born with. You know the Lord first's Wood Release? That is a kekkei genkai, as is the Uchiha Sharingan or the Hyuga Byakugan. Most kekkei genkai are passed from parent to child but there are certain instances when someone awakens a never before seen kekkei genkai. As far as we know, the Lord first is the first and only user of wood release", Kyo explained, "having a child who awakens a kekkei genkai is like winning a prize"

"So you think I have one of these… kekkei genkai?"

"It is possible, yes. We have to get you to a hospital to run test but if you do indeed have a kekkei genkai, this could very well ascend the Zawa family into a full blown clan", Mina explained, getting more and more excited by the idea. Her son mimicked her, bouncing up and down, as did his clone, though he quickly dismissed it, like any other clone.

They left their modest home and walked over to the hospital, passing civilians going through their day, unaware that the small family walking past them would soon rise to heights they would never have dreamed of.

The medic nin manning the counter, looked up lazily. He wore a chunin's vest, which displayed the Nara clan symbol. There weren't many Nara who became medic nin but to every rule, there was exceptions. His eyes snapped onto Kyo Zawa, lighting up in recognition, "Did you get hurt on your last mission or something, why'd you bring your kid?"

"No- I'm actually here about my son, Chiko. You see, something interesting happened during our training and I believe he might've awakened a kekkei genkai"

"Really?" He looked surprised, before turning annoyed, "how bothersome… I'll call for one of our medical Jonin, they will be able to run some tests on your son's blood, just go and sit in the waiting room"

It didn't take long for the Jonin to arrive and draw some blood. They had to wait for a few hours, so the family of three went out to eat. When they came back, the medical Jonin was waiting for them. He looked excited and exhausted. Being a doctor was hard work.

"I can tell you, your son has indeed awakened a kekkei genkai, though it isn't one we have in our records. This will be a hard journey, with no scrolls of past user's knowledge to draw upon, you will be largely on your own. We''ll have to record your kekkei genkai. What does it do?"

"Well, my son used his blood to create a corporeal clone, so I guess it has something to do with blood?"

"How about blood release then?"

"Blood release…", Chiko whispered, his eyes twinkling with excitement. Ideas for techniques were flooding into his mind.

As it turned out, creating new techniques for his kekkei genkai wasn't as easy as he had imagined. Over the next two years, leading up to his graduation, he only created a handful of jutsu. The most significant aspect? He had to draw blood in order to use his jutsu. With every use of his techniques, a new scar was added to his body. His arms were basically all scar tissue, which at least made the drawing of blood less painful. He didn't slack off his other studies either. He remained near the top of his class in the theory and about average when it came to taijutsu and shurikenjutsu. He learned quite a few non kekkei genkai jutsus too, water clone, great fireball, hiding like a mole technique and a few more. Though his affinity was for water jutsu, his parents still taught him a variety of jutsu, so that he wouldn't be a one trick pony.

They had also been given a district by the Hokage, for he was certain Chiko would create a legacy worthy of a clan.

It was a small territory, carved up from what had previously been the Uchiha district, on the outskirts of the village.

He graduated easily, the written test was moderately hard and the practical test, the clone jutsu, was laughably easy for him.

The next day, he was sitting in the Hokage's office, where Lord third looked over his paperwork, "soon, you'll be the head of your clan, I want you to work hard under your Jonin sensei and you can do great things, I know it"

"Thank you for your belief in me", Chiko couldn't meet the Hokage's eyes, "I will do my best to do my village proud!"

"That is all I can ask for"
