Chapter 3 - the secret behind the gate

Mira walked downstairs with her nanny and entered the private study room where her home tutor was waiting.

"Good morning, Miss Mira," the tutor greeted.

"Good morning, Mr. Anderson."

Mira took her seat reluctantly.

She loved learning, but today, her mind was somewhere else.

Christmas vacation.

She couldn't stop thinking about it.

"Miss Mira?"

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"I asked you a question."

Mira blinked.

"I'm sorry."

Mr. Anderson smiled.

"You seem distracted today."

"I'm just excited about our vacation."

"I can see that."

Mira smiled.

After her lesson ended, she quickly ran upstairs to her room.

She opened her wardrobe and began choosing the clothes she wanted to take with her.

She was so excited that she didn't notice the conversation happening downstairs.

---

In the living room, Mrs. Jones stood near the window with her phone pressed against her ear.

Her expression was completely different from the smile she had shown Mira that morning.

She looked worried.

"Are you sure?" she whispered.

There was silence on the other end of the call.

Mrs. Jones glanced toward the staircase.

"Mira cannot know anything."

Another voice spoke through the phone.

"She will find out eventually."

Mrs. Jones closed her eyes.

"Not yet."

"We warned you years ago."

"I know."

"You should never have allowed her to leave the mansion."

Mrs. Jones tightened her grip on the phone.

"She is going on vacation with us. She deserves to experience a normal childhood."

A pause followed.

Then the voice became serious.

"If you take her outside, you are putting her life at risk."

Mrs. Jones swallowed hard.

"I'll protect my daughter."

"You can't protect her from everyone."

The call ended.

Mrs. Jones slowly lowered the phone.

She looked toward the staircase.

"Mira..."

Her voice trembled.

She knew her daughter was growing up.

And with every passing year, keeping the truth from her was becoming harder.

---

That evening, Mr. Jones returned home earlier than usual.

Mira ran downstairs as soon as she heard the front door open.

"Daddy!"

She threw her arms around him.

Mr. Jones smiled and hugged her tightly.

"There's my princess."

"I've already packed my clothes!"

He laughed.

"Already?"

"Yes! I don't want to forget anything."

"You won't."

Mira pulled away from him.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Will I be able to go outside when we're on vacation?"

Her father froze for a moment.

Only for a second.

But Mira noticed.

"Of course," he finally answered.

"Really?"

"Yes."

Mira smiled brightly.

"I can't wait!"

Mr. Jones forced a smile.

"Neither can I."

But when Mira ran away, his smile disappeared.

Mrs. Jones approached him quietly.

"She asked about going outside."

"I know."

"She's becoming curious."

Mr. Jones sighed.

"I know."

"What are we going to do?"

He looked toward the staircase where Mira had disappeared.

"We keep her safe."

"And if they find us?"

Mr. Jones's expression hardened.

"They won't."

His wife looked at him.

"You don't know that."

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Mr. Jones whispered,

"We have spent ten years protecting our daughter."

He turned toward the window.

"I won't let anyone take her away from us."

---

Later that night, Mira lay in her bed, staring at the ceiling.

She could hear her parents talking quietly somewhere downstairs.

She couldn't hear everything they were saying.

But then she heard one sentence clearly.

"They are looking for her."

Mira sat up.

Her heart began beating faster.

Who were they talking about?

And who were they looking for?

She quietly climbed out of bed and walked toward the door.

Before she could open it, she heard her father's voice.

"Whatever happens, Mira must never know who she really is."

Mira froze.

Her hand remained on the doorknob.

Who she really was?

She stepped backward in shock.

For the first time in her life, Mira began to wonder if the life she knew was nothing but a carefully protected secret.

And downstairs, her parents had no idea that their daughter had just heard everything.

The vacation was only days away.

And it would be the beginning of the end of Mira's perfect life.
