Chapter 43 - Diluted Soul Filter

Where did he come from?!

Satoya panicked, his heart beating at a rapid pace. He tried to back up but couldn't go further as he was against the counter where the sheet of paper was placed.

Roland let out a light chuckle, holding his hand out as if he's surrendering. He let out a positive sigh, speaking through that same optimistic but oddly hollow voice.

"C'mon, don't be scared, I ain't gonna do anything to you right now." He slowly walked beside him grabbing the firearm. Roland cocked back the gun, then fired it into the ceiling. Bang!

After shooting the gun, he began to take off the ammunition. And dumped the bullets into the floor, each bullet casing made a high clattering sound. During this whole act, Roland's expression remained inhumanely serene.

Roland looked up, his emerald pupils were creepy, too creepy. Despite all this, Satoya wasn't as threatened as he had expected. Perhaps due to Satoya being fully aware this man is no longer human, but instead a Cataclysm of a disaster that ended thousands of years ago.

Roland placed his hand on hip. A smugly smile was drawn all over his face. He again spoke in the same eerie voice.

"You seem like you have a number of questions, go ahead and ask them."

Satoya felt his hands sweating profusely in anxiety, but clenched it. Scrambling words in his head, however, he figured that perhaps he should ask about the journals and entries he had read minutes prior to his arrival.

So he asked, "You're from the 8th disaster, yet how are you alive? That disaster ended generations ago." Without a single second of processing, Roland smirked, as if intrigued by the question.

"Jumping to that question aren't we? Fine, I'll explain." He continued, spreading his hands out very subtly.

"There's a procedure I had done, called Diluted Soul filter. And what that is, is the process of using your own brain matter to dilute and override the brain and consciousness of the person you are doing the procedure with." He explained the whole thing without a drop of hesitation, as if he was fully intent on explaining what he had done.

Satoya however, was unsure if he should be believing it, but asked a follow up question, "wouldn't that cause your original body to be soulless?"

Roland raised his hand, balling it up and raising the index finger to push against his own lips making a shushing gesture, speaking in a whisper, "yet I still possess the resonance with the inverted needle. It's quite interesting really, as even if I had switched bodies, I still keep the abilities I already have. Begs the question, is the resonance gained from being chosen by that inverted needle bound to the soul and consciousness?"

Before Satoya could ask another question, Roland interrupted, although he wasn't directly speaking to him, he seemed to be talking to himself this time, due to him looking at seemingly nothing but is in a gesture representing deep thought.

"But to think Amadeus Magnus figured out that same procedure that eventually led to the creation of the Ceaseless Network Theory, puts into perspective how impressive he is. Unfortunate on how he—Ah, I got carried away."

"Obviously, now I have other questions to ask." Satoya demanded. Satoya realized how serious he himself was, which was quite frankly strange for someone like him. He was never really the type of person to demand someone this intensely. Maybe he is changing as a person, or maybe this environment just caused him to finally start thinking about survival, but the environment itself isn't really threatening, however the most threatening thing here is the man who is standing before him.

"Alright, go ahead." Roland replied.

"Who is the one who wrote on this sheet of paper?" Satoya pointed to the sheet of paper he just read seconds ago.

"That is a note written by a former assistant of mine a couple years ago. His name was Ray. Although he only worked under me for several months, I found him quite boring in my opinion, but the most intriguing thing he had done was use a gun he managed to smuggle to shoot himself in this very place."

Satoya quickly replied, "What?"

"Alright I lied." Roland laughed, casually correcting himself, "he was one of the 7 assistants I had, unlike the rest of them, he willingly shot himself and his brother who was also an assistant to free themselves from this place."

"7 assistants?" Satoya asked, however Roland began to walk past him, gently placing his hand on his shoulder, whispering to him, "you can ask Yurina that, and besides, you ask too many questions, I can't answer them all day." Roland took his hand off Satoya's shoulder, walking out, yet on his way, he paused.

"But, I'll say this, of the 7 assistants, only 3 are alive. Julius was the 4th, sadly Yurina killed him." Roland then added, "speaking of her, she's eavesdropping on this whole conversation." Roland said as he walked out of the lab room door.

Suddenly, Yurina lunged into him, stabbing him repeatedly into the ground with what seemed to be a scalpel. Blood gushed everywhere, soaking the labcoat, and staining the white marbled floor and walls with blood. As she got up, she wiped the blood off her face, also the blood off her hands by wiping it off on her lab coat. She then looked up at Satoya, asking him a question.

"Why were you having a normal conversation with him?"

"Normal?" Satoya replied in utter confusion, but Yurina answered, "by that, I mean just Roland letting you ask him questions, he rarely does that." She clarified.

"I'm unsure, but did you kill him?" he asked, looking at the bleeding body of Roland. Yurina then kicked his body against the hallway wall, speaking in a sour and disdainful voice, "sadly, I can't kill him."
