Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Desert Horizon

We leave at dawn in a rusted Land Rover. The road west winds through fields, then dust. Villages shrink behind us. Time thins.

In the Sahel, we stop at a lone well. A woman offers millet porridge. She touches Jabari's orb and nods. "You carry the light."

By dusk, the Sahara Gate rises—black rock, circular, silent. The crater glows faintly. The jaguar waits. It stares at me. I stare back.

We camp. Kesi assembles the scope. Amina hums. Jabari recounts tales of sky-rending. The stars blink oddly tonight. One—bright, blue—has never been there before.

Through the scope, I see the child. She points upward. The crater pulses.

Lightning cracks. Ships fall—or rise. The air becomes drumbeat.

We stand at the edge. Our hands touch the stone. Light floods us.

We are not afraid.
