Chapter 748 - Chapter 575

Aethelgard hangs in the bruised violet sky like a wound that refuses to close.

The sky island drifts above the shattered spine of the Red Line, its underbelly a tangle of fossilized roots and crystalline stalactites that refract the dying sunlight and scatter it in fractured rainbows across the mountain peak. Imperial Cumulus clouds churn around its base, dense and gray as old ash, their edges crackling with trapped lightning that flashes without thunder. The island itself is a ziggurat turned upside down—a stepped pyramid of black stone and jade veined with silver, its apex piercing through the cloud layer to capture the last rays of the sun. Serpentine carvings coil around its visible faces, their eyes inlaid with ruby that glints like blood droplets against the stone. A perpetual storm rages around its perimeter, ionized clouds that hiss and spark, making the air taste of copper and rain.

The entrance to the Kunaishi Shrine gapes before Micah like a serpent's open mouth. The mountain itself is a four-faced pyramid of diamond-veined black stone, its surfaces radiating an unnatural warmth that has nothing to do with the sun. The cave mouth is not a natural formation—its edges are too regular, too deliberate, carved with runes that spiral inward in patterns that make the eyes ache to follow. The stone around the entrance is black as dried blood, veined with threads of crimson and gold that pulse with a slow, rhythmic glow. The sound of falling water echoes from somewhere deep within, a steady drip-drip-drip like a countdown to something inevitable.

Micah stands at the threshold, one hand pressed to his chest where the brand throbs beneath his waistcoat. The compulsion is overwhelming—a gravitational pull that tugs at his bones, his blood, the very marrow of his being. Thye's voice pours through his skull like honey laced with venom, her words too fast to parse, too insistent to ignore.

Enter. Claim. Open. Free.

He grits his teeth, forcing his feet to stay planted. The wind howls around the peak, carrying the salt of the distant sea and something older—the metallic tang of blood and the sweet rot of ancient sacrifices. Below, the fractured Red Line drops away into clouds that churn with heat lightning, their undersides glowing orange and gold as if lit from within by the planet's molten core.

Bovee stands twenty paces back, his silver grey-blue eyes fixed on Micah's silhouette. His hand rests on the hilt of Shiten—a reflex, not a threat. The wind catches his dark hair, pulling strands loose from their tie.

"Are you sure about this?"

The question lands like a stone in still water. Micah's jaw tightens. Thye's voice rises in response to the interruption, a hiss of irritation that makes him wince.

Ignore them. They do not understand. They cannot understand.

He looks over his shoulder, his eyes feeling strained and hot. The gray ring around his iris—the Covenant mark—glinting in the lightning from Aethelgard's storm, flashing once before fading.

"I am sure."

Marcella steps forward from beside Bovee, her amber eyes soft with worry. The wind whips her auburn hair across her face, and she brushes it away with an impatient gesture. Her fingers find the rose brooch at her throat, touching it for luck.

"We should come with you," she says, her voice carrying more warmth than the situation warrants. "You shouldn't go alone."

Before Micah can respond, Darcy's voice cuts through the wind like a blade. She stands further back, her silver eyes fixed on the horizon, her posture rigid as carved stone. The massive executioner's sword Shisan-NiImaru rests across her back, its weight anchors her against the mountain's treacherous winds.

"Do not deter him or interfere," she calls out, her voice flat and without inflection. "We need to conclude our business here and move on."

Marcella spins toward her, hands balling into fists at her sides. "We are not interfering!" The words carry an edge of frustration that cuts through the wind. "We are simply offering aid. There's a difference."

Darcy's head turns just enough to fix Marcella with a cold silver stare. The slitted pupils contract in the fading light. "Is there?"

A beat of silence stretches between them, taut as a violin string.

Hao Silvera Shepherd steps forward, his hand settling on Marcella's shoulder with a gentleness that seems out of place on this jagged peak. His silver-white hair glowing with the lightning flashes, and his deep brown eyes hold that familiar searching quality—the look of a man who reads people the way others read music.

"There's nothing we can do," he says, his voice quiet, meant only for her. "This is something he must do on his own."

Marcella's shoulders curl inward, her defiance bleeding away. She looks past Hao, past Bovee, to the silhouette of Micah's back as he stares into the cave's waiting mouth. The runes around the entrance pulse with that slow rhythm, and for a moment, the shadows inside seem to writhe.

"Yeah, but..." Her voice trails off. She looks to Bovee, who shakes his head once—a small, final gesture.

Her shoulders drop in defeat.

Micah stands at the threshold, feeling the weight of their eyes on his back. The compulsion claws at his chest, stronger now that he's closer. Thye's voice has become a constant hum, a vibration that resonates through his bones.

Stop hesitating. They will not save you. Only I can save you. Only I can free you from the cage of your blood.

He takes a breath, forcing air into lungs that feel too tight. The wind carries the scent of the mountain—heated stone, old iron, something that might be ozone but isn't. The air inside the cave is warm and damp, like the exhalation of some great beast. It smells of water and mineral and the dust of ancient things.

He tries to push Thye from his mind, to find a moment of clarity. A single second of silence where his thoughts are his own.

You cannot resist, she whispers. Why do you keep trying?

His jaw clenches. His hand presses harder against his chest, feeling the brand's heat through layers of fabric and skin.

The wind howls. The lightning flashes. The water drips.

He opens his eyes.

The cave waits.

"I am going," he announces, and his voice carries the weight of a door closing.

He steps forward.

The threshold swallows him. The runes flare once, bright enough to cast his shadow long and sharp across the rock, and then they dim, leaving only the glow of distant lightning to mark where he vanished.

Bovee stands motionless, his hand still resting on Shiten's hilt. The wind tears at his coat, but he doesn't seem to notice.

Marcella's hand drifts to her mouth, her fingers pressing against her lips as if to hold back words that would do no good.

Hao's head tilts, his eyes fixed on the darkness where Micah disappeared. He hums under his breath—a quiet, minor-key melody that the wind snatches away before it can fully form.

Darcy Rue turns away first. "We wait," she says, her voice carrying no emotion. "Then we move on."
