Marya's eyes flutter open.
White. Everything is white—a ceiling of pale, smooth stone that glows with a soft, gentle warmth. She blinks, once, twice, letting her vision adjust. The room smells of herbs and clean linen, with an undertone of something earthy—moss, perhaps, or dried flowers.
She turns her head.
Law sits slouched in a chair across from her, his spotted hat pulled low over his eyes. His arms are crossed, his breathing slow and even. Asleep. The dark circles under his eyes are deeper than she remembers, his jaw shadowed with stubble he hasn't bothered to shave.
Marya turns her attention back to the ceiling. She takes a deep breath, feeling the rise and fall of her chest, the steady rhythm of her heart. Something is different. Something has changed.
She lifts her hand, flexing her fingers, inspecting her forearm.
The black veins have faded.
They're still there—a faint tracery beneath her skin, like old scars or the ghost of lightning—but they've receded. They no longer pulse with that hungry, crawling darkness. They no longer climb toward her heart.
Marya's eyes narrow. She whispers to herself, "What did he..."
"You're awake."
Marya looks over. Law sits up, pushing his hat back, his grey eyes sharp and alert despite the exhaustion lining his face.
Marya's lips curl into a weak smile. "Did you..."
Law nods, his voice quiet. "I resealed it. With some adjustments." He pauses, his jaw flexing. "It won't be able to pull so much Haki from you now."
Marya smirks, her voice carrying a hint of warmth. "You've gotten stronger."
Law's jaw flexes again. A faint flush creeps up his neck, and he pulls his hat down, hiding his eyes. He opens his mouth to retort—
"Thank you, Law."
Law stiffens. He looks away, his voice a muttered grumble. "Yeah, sure. Just..."
The door opens.
Jannali and Atlas walk in, their presence filling the small room with energy. Atlas pauses mid-step, his ears perking up. "Hey, boss! You're finally awake!"
Jannali adds, her drawl carrying a grin, "Bout bloody hell! About time you joined the land of the living! Thought you'd carked it!"
Marya smirks. "You can't get rid of me that easily."
Jannali shrugs, dropping onto the end of the bed and crossing her legs. "I was actually looking forward to a holiday, but looks like that's on the back burner for now."
Marya grunts as she pushes herself up. Law starts to move, but Atlas is already there, his strong hands taking hers, helping her sit up. He slides behind her, letting her lean against his chest.
"Relax, boss," Atlas says, his voice gentle. "Don't push yourself and pass out again."
Law's lips press into a thin line. He settles back into his chair, his eyes never leaving Marya.
Marya smirks, her voice hoarse. "How long have I been out?"
Atlas shrugs. "About a week."
Marya's head flops back against his shoulder. "A week." She rubs her face with both hands, groaning. "Ugh. Have you heard anything from the others?"
Atlas shrugs again. "Noodle Neck has been in touch. Last time we talked, he said the subs were almost finished."
Marya nods. "That's good."
"Marya."
Everyone turns to Law. His eyes are fixed on her, his expression serious.
"That ability," he says. "The Celestial Omen."
Marya's voice is quiet. "What about it?"
Law's jaw tightens. "You shouldn't use it."
Marya's lips press together.
"It requires too much of your Haki," Law continues, his voice sharp. "It could kill you."
Marya nods slowly. "Yeah. I know."
Law snaps, "If you knew, then why did you—"
Marya silences him with a glare. "I'm not trying to die, Law."
Atlas breaks the tension, his voice calm. "We know that, boss."
Everyone turns as Jannali curses, "Bloody hell." She holds her wrist, inspecting the Choros-Anemos. The silver rings jingle softly as she moves her fingers over the etched lettering.
"I haven't got a brass razoo how this works," she mutters.
Marya chuckles.
Law snaps, "Are you serious right now? We risked our lives and—"
The door opens.
Bō-Zak, Kaburo, Theodore Trebonianus, and a grumpy-looking Buccaneer doctor walk in.
Bō-Zak smirks, his pipe trailing smoke. "This is a lively group. Someone must have woken up."
Theodore Trebonianus laughs, his voice booming. "By the Laughing Sun! It is good to see you with your eyes open!"
The Buccaneer doctor grunts as he moves to examine Marya. He's massive—even by Buccaneer standards—with a face like a weathered cliff and hands the size of dinner plates. He looms over her, his shadow swallowing her whole.
Atlas tells her, "This is Dr. Grumio. This is his office."
Marya opens her mouth to greet him—
Dr. Grumio's massive fingers are already at her throat, inspecting her glands. He pulls a stethoscope from his coat, pressing it to her chest, listening to her heart. He stands, looking down at her with judgmental eyes, and grunts.
"Needs rest."
He lumbers to his desk, settling into a chair that groans under his weight, and begins writing in a notebook.
Law snaps, "We already knew that!"
Dr. Grumio ignores him completely.
Kaburo cocks a hip, resting his hand on Kalamaru's hilt. "I'm confident he heard you."
Bō-Zak smirks. "Yeah, relax, lover boy. We all did."
Law snaps again, "What did you just say?"
Kaburo adds, his voice dry, "You've been here for days. Maybe you should take a break. Get some fresh air."
Law opens his mouth to snap again—
Theodore interrupts, clapping his hands together. "It's time to feast!"
Marya swallows hard.
Dr. Grumio grumbles, "Don't push it."
Theodore belts out a laugh. "Of course not! Of course not! But she hasn't eaten in days, and everyone can't wait to meet the woman who brought us into the New Dawn."
Atlas feels Marya stiffen against him. "Maybe we should—"
Marya's stomach growls.
The sound is loud. Audible. Impossible to ignore.
A moment of awkward silence.
Theodore laughs, his joy filling the room. "That settles it, then! I will inform—"
BOOM!
The door slams open.
Rowland stands in the doorway, his stormy grey eyes wide, his freckled face flushed with excitement. Three other Buccaneer children crowd behind him, all trying to peer past his shoulders.
"Is it true?" Rowland demands. "Is she awake?"
Dr. Grumio grumbles, "No more visitors!"
Rowland whines, "But—"
The chair scrapes across the floor as Dr. Grumio stands, his massive frame blocking the doorway. "Needs rest!"
Rowland tries to look past him, craning his neck. Dr. Grumio closes the door in his face.
Theodore laughs, his voice warm. "As the Dawn rises, you are right. But maybe a stretch of the legs is what she needs."
Atlas glances at Marya, his voice gentle. "What do you say, boss?"
Marya relents, sighing. "Yeah, okay. I should probably get up and walk around a little."
Dr. Grumio grunts as he pulls his chair out, settling back at his desk. "Not too much."
Law groans, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Bō-Zak smirks, placing a hand on Law's shoulder. "Relax, doc."
Law mutters, "Shut up."
Jannali nods, standing from the bed and taking Marya's hand. "Right. Come on, mate. We've got a do to get to, and I could eat the arse out of a low-flying duck."
Marya chuckles, letting Jannali pull her to her feet. Her legs wobble, but Atlas is there, steadying her with a hand on her back.
Theodore leads the way, his massive frame somehow fitting through the doorway. Bō-Zak and Kaburo follow, their footsteps echoing against the stone floor.
Law lingers for a moment, watching Marya lean on Atlas and Jannali as they walk. His jaw is tight, his eyes shadowed with something that might be worry, might be relief, might be both.
Then he follows.
---
The village of the Buccaneers spreads before them like a dream made real.
Homes carved from white stone and stucco, their windows glowing with warm amber light. Pathways of packed earth winding between gardens bursting with vegetables and flowers. Buccaneers of all ages stop what they're doing to stare—massive men and women, their faces filled with wonder, their children peeking from behind their legs.
The sky is a hue of colors with gentle twilight, soft and golden. The air smells of cooking food and fresh bread and something sweet, like honey and fruit.
Marya walks slowly, her boots scuffing against the ground. Atlas stays close, his hand hovering near her elbow. Jannali walks ahead, her afro bouncing, her eyes taking in everything.
Theodore leads them to a massive open-air pavilion, its roof supported by pillars carved with sun motifs and laughing faces. Long tables groan under the weight of food—roasted meats, fresh vegetables, fruits she doesn't recognize, bread still steaming from the oven.
Buccaneers fill the tables, their voices a low hum of conversation. When they see Marya and her crew, the hum grows louder, faces turning, smiles spreading.
Theodore gestures expansively. "Welcome to the feast of the New Dawn!"
Marya swallows, suddenly aware of every eye in the pavilion fixed on her.
Atlas leans in, his voice low. "You okay, boss?"
Marya's lips twitch. "I hate crowds."
Jannali snorts. "Tough luck, mate. You're the guest of honor."
Bō-Zak smirks, already eyeing the food. "I could get used to this."
Kaburo's voice is flat. "Don't."
Law stands behind them all, his arms crossed, his eyes scanning the crowd with the wary assessment of a man who trusts no one.
Theodore raises his hands, and the crowd falls silent.
"Friends! Family! Children of the Dawn!" His voice booms across the pavilion. "Today, we celebrate! Today, we honor those who have freed us! Today, we welcome the New Dawn!"
The crowd erupts in cheers.
Marya winces.
Atlas squeezes her arm. "Just breathe, boss."
Marya takes a deep breath.
And then she smiles.
It's not a big smile. It's not a warm smile. But it's real.
The New Dawn has come.
And for the first time in a long time, Marya feels like maybe—just maybe—everything is going to be okay.
