Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Winds of Warning

Lucas awoke with the early light streaming through the tall windows of his bedchamber. The gentle rustling of wind brushing against the curtains paired with the distant chirping of morning birds made for a serene start, almost too serene.

A nagging feeling pulled him from comfort.

He sat up, his hair slightly tousled from sleep. Umbra, as usual, lay in the shadowed corner of the room, awake and alert. Zephyra rested curled atop the balcony, wings tucked around herself like a cocoon of emerald and silver. But something felt… off.

He pulled on a dark tunic and leather pants, quickly lacing his boots. The moment he opened the double doors leading to the courtyard, the reason became clear.

"Elira?" he called, spotting the lithe elven woman adjusting the saddle on Luna, her wind lynx, near the castle gates. Her hood was pulled low, and her posture was stiff.

She turned, startled. "Lucas."

"You're leaving?" he said, crossing their distance.

"I planned to," she replied quietly. "Luna's wounds are mostly healed. It's time I move on."

Lucas tilted his head. "And go where, exactly? The forest is no place for you right now. And Zephyra would be devastated if Luna left."

Luna gave a soft growl, and Zephyra, having sensed her friend stirring, flapped her wings and landed beside her with a cheerful chirp. The two beasts nuzzled affectionately.

Elira hesitated.

Lucas folded his arms. "You two should stay. The castle is large, and we could use a skilled archer like you. Luna and Zephyra have a bond. That's rare."

"…It's not that simple."

"Then explain it to me."

The High Elf remained silent for a long moment before letting out a breath. She stroked Luna's fur absently, her green eyes fixed on a faraway place.

"I'm from a forest you probably never heard of. Vel'Thalas. Deep within the Silverbark Woods, where the trees sing with ancient magic and the stars shine even through the canopy. It was beautiful… my home."

Lucas didn't speak. He sensed this wasn't easy for her.

"My people lived in harmony with nature, ruled by the High Council. My family was… influential." She avoided his eyes. "I was raised among scholars and warriors. Trained in wind archery and elven history. I was… expected to lead someday."

Lucas caught the subtle wordplay. Expected. Not wanted.

"But then came the Beast Tide," she said bitterly. "They emerged from the northern ridge. Hundreds of them. A wave of monsters—gnarled wolves, horned boars, spider-hounds, and…"

Her voice cracked. Luna pressed against her leg, trying to comfort her.

"The one that led them… it was no ordinary beast. A silverback ape, taller than any creature I've seen. Intelligent. Organized. It tore through our defenses, commanded the others like a general. My people… we fought. But we were overwhelmed."

A heavy silence settled.

Lucas finally asked, "And the survivors?"

"Some fled south to Myrravale. Others scattered into the wilds. I lost contact with most of them. I've been tracking the tide's movement ever since. That's why I was in the forest near Greystone. And now…"

Her gaze locked with his.

"They're coming here."

Lucas's expression darkened.

"I followed their trail. The silverback is leading them toward this region. I estimate their number to be over a hundred. Maybe more. If you don't prepare, your Barony will suffer the same fate as my homeland."

Lucas exhaled slowly.

He turned toward the rising sun on the horizon. "Then we'll prepare."

Elira blinked, caught off guard by his calm response. "Just like that?"

"I'm not letting anyone else lose their home," he said firmly. "I swore to rebuild Greystone. That includes defending it."

Elira looked at him—truly looked. There was strength in his eyes. Not just in his power, but in his resolve.

"…You remind me of someone I knew," she murmured. "A prince who tried to stand against the odds."

"I'm no prince."

"Maybe not," she said, a small smile forming. "But you have the heart of a king."

Lucas turned toward her. "Stay. Help me. You know these beasts better than anyone. We need you."

After a long pause, Elira finally nodded. "Alright. I'll stay. But only because Luna would never forgive me if I took her away from Zephyra."

Lucas chuckled. "Of course. The bond between beasts runs deeper than blood sometimes."

As the two companions led their beasts back toward the castle, the system chimed in his mind.

-Later That Day – Study Hall-

Lucas sat within the study hall, maps spread across the ancient oak table. The flickering firelight danced on the bookshelves, casting golden hues over dust-covered tomes and relics.

Zephyra snoozed beside the window while Umbra stood like a statue near the door.

"Status," Lucas said in his mind.

He clenched his fists. 'We're still so far from being ready. I need to call for a war council meeting.'

-Later That Evening – War Council Chamber-

The great stone hall hadn't seen activity in over a decade. Dust clung to old banners, and cracked chandeliers hung like ghosts from the ceiling. But tonight, the room stirred with life once more.

Lucas stood at the head of the long obsidian table. On his right stood Elira, now clad in a forest-green tunic with her bow slung across her back. On his left stood Sir Hale—the fire-scarred head guard—with his armored fire bat perched above the hearth. Beside him was the ever-composed butler, Reynard, his loyal husky-beast, Fen, lounging silently beside him.

Around the room stood newly-appointed figures from earlier quests—farm overseers, militia captains, scouts, and even a young herbalist.

Lucas's voice rang clear through the hall. "We have twenty days before the Beast Tide reaches us. Our enemy is not just mindless beasts—it's an organized force, led by a silverback ape with intelligence and command capability."

Murmurs spread like wildfire.

"Vel'Thalas fell to this horde," Elira added, her voice sharp. "They will not stop unless they're wiped out—or everything we know will burn."

Lucas raised a hand. "That won't happen here. Greystone will stand."

He placed a hand on the central map. "Here's the plan:"

"Hale, begin organizing a militia. Every able-bodied man and woman must train. I want drills starting tomorrow at dawn."

"Reynard, send scouts to the outer ridges. Watch posts must be built along the forest edge. No movement goes unnoticed."

"Elira, I want you as our tactical scout leader. Take our best marksmen. Track the Tide, learn their behavior, and report everything."

"The rest of you—gather supplies, reinforce the walls, and secure our food reserves. No task is too small now."

Everyone nodded, determination replacing fear.

Lucas continued, his tone heavy with resolve, "This is no longer just a Barony. It is the last stand for everyone who's lost something. We fight not because we are ready, but because we must be."

Then the system chimed in.

Lucas's eyes gleamed.

"We begin at first light," he said. "Dismissed."

As the council left one by one, Elira lingered behind.

"You sounded like a king just now," she said, smiling faintly.

Lucas looked at the map. "Then I'd better start acting like one."

Then it came—a whisper, soft as starlight yet resonant with power.

{Angel}: "Lucas… the storm approaches. But within the storm lies your weapon."

Lucas stiffened, eyes scanning the chamber. "Angel?"

{Angel}: "The silverback commands through fear and unity. Break their formation, and the Tide will scatter."

He blinked. "How?"

There was a pause.

{Angel}: "It fears one thing… the scent of death. The echo of a predator older than itself. Find the ancient fang buried in your land. A remnant of the last Beast Emperor."

Lucas's heart pounded. "A relic?"

{Angel}: "More than that. A legacy. Hidden beneath the old battleground west of Greystone. Unearth it, and awaken the roar that silences beasts."

Before he could ask more, the voice faded.

Lucas exhaled, fire kindling in his chest. 'An ancient fang… a predator older than the silverback. If I can use that… we have a chance.'

He turned toward the map again, tracing his finger to the old battlefield west of Greystone, long marked on maps, but never explored.

Behind him, Umbra stirred as if sensing his resolve. Zephyra raised her head from the rafters and let out a soft chirp, Luna echoing her.

Lucas narrowed his eyes.

"They wanted a fight," he said quietly. "Now they're getting one."
