"Can I trust you, your royal highness?"
There was a mad desperation behind those raw, whispered words. The kind of mad desperation that set off warning bells in Ember's head.
She sat up straighter on her seat, holding Lady Sylvia's eyes.
"I swear to you," Ember promised solemnly, "you can trust me with this burden and I swear it to you."
The tears kept rolling down Lady Sylvia's cheeks, but it wasn't just tears of weakness. In the woman's stormy grey eyes was the sighting of an indelible strength. The kind that only appeared when one survived trauma.
She sniffled, producing another handkerchief to which she used to wipe her tears. She then squared her shoulders, holding Ember's unwavering stare as well.
"The Duke Heir is a monster." She said coldly like those six words were all the explanation that Ember needed to know about.
Ember blinked once.
