Chapter 142 - Chicken

The sizzle of whale meat on the charcoal grill was tantalizing. Raven leaned forward, her face flushed from the heat, and used a pair of metal tongs to flip a thick slab of killer whale steak. The spices she rubbed into it were now crystallizing over the meats surface, forming a glazed crust that glowed with grease. Raven did not just hear the meat cook she heard it call her name, the vibration of juice bubbling inside every pound, the scent curled into her nose with that signature aroma of fat meeting the chef.

With a twist of her wrist, Raven tossed a chunk of fat whale blubber onto the grill on top of the meat, letting the fat melt over the sizzling marble whale slabs of meat. The fat crackled instantly, sending bursts of flavor-glazed smoke into the air. Raven watched it all with the pride of someone who has waited years for this exact moment to happen again a sea monster grill out. From the system space Raven pulled out several plate-sized loaves of homemade bread. The bread looked cooked to golden brown, with a slightly sweet-smell of cinnamon on it. Raven cut open a loaf and said to herself, "I love to killing myself slowly with carbohydrates."

Off in the background, Alara is elbow-deep in the corpse of the beached killer whale. After Metal Mouse pried the glowing Nucleus Core from its skull and Raven stored it away, there were still several tons of meat left to be harvested before the sun spoiled it and their fun along with it. Alara smiled happily as she reached into the system space withdrawing one of her favorite tools: a gas-powered diesel chainsaw. She revved the motor once, twice, and then moved it forward with glee. "That's right, ladies and gentlemen," Alara said to the wind, "I'm going to carve up a killer whale, and to do it, I'm using my chainsaw."

Raven didn't look up from the grill, but her tone was amused as she called out to Alara. "Only real women use gas-powered diesel chainsaws Alara. Not one of those battery powered ones, environmental tree-huggers use."

The chainsaw roared to life, its serrated teeth digging into the whale's skin with no resistance. Chunks of meat the size of a couch were being cut out, thick meaty slabs nearly two hundred pounds in weight. Alara lifted one chunk with both arms and tossed it into the system storage.

Curious about the taste, Alara reached down, slicing off a small piece of raw whale meat to try, popping it into her mouth. Alara chewed it, her eyebrows furrowed in thought. Raven walked over, cleaning her hands on her apron. "What does it taste like to you, Alara?"

"It tastes like chicken," Alara with a mouthful of meat.

Raven rolled her eyes and sighed. "Come on, Alara. Every raw piece of meat tastes like chicken to you. That's just because you ate that live chicken inside of Sanctuary the other day. I told you not to eat things that are still alive that's a bad habit for a zombie to get into."

"Yeah, okay, Raven. It's a bad habit for a zombie to get into eating raw flesh. I'm sure no zombie has ever worried about that," Alara replied with a sarcastic tone of voice. "Still, Raven I can eat either raw or cooked meat. I just like your cooking better. You use some great seasonings on our food."

"All I do is put salt and pepper on it," Raven said, waving off the compliment. "You're the one treating chicken blood like it's a condiment. Eating a chicken doesn't mean swallowing the head whole and thinking the blood coming out of its neck is ketchup. This isn't some low-budget horror movie blood is not a condiment."

Alara tilted her head, laughing. "I just think it's the right way to get my revenge on those damn chickens that scream at the ass crack of dawn to wake me up from sleeping."

Raven narrowed her eyes. "Wait a minute Alara. You didn't eat one of the roosters by accident, did you? Thinking it was a chicken?"

There was a pause.

"Uh... no," Alara said a little too quickly. "Of course not. I would never do something childish like that."

As Alara said this, her chainsaw cut too deep, hitting a major blood artery inside the whale. The cut burst open like a ruptured tank, spraying a wave of dark red blood into the sky. It rained down on both Alara and Raven, soaking their hair and clothes. Raven blinked, looked up, then turned her face to Alara. "Why don't we let Mighty Mouse finish this Alara? This job's getting a little too messy."

Alara, now dripping in blood, nodded her head slowly. "Agreed."

Together, they walked away from the whale carcass and towards a secluded corner of the beach. Raven summoned a stream of fresh water from the pond in Sanctuary. The water washed them clean. When they were done, their new clothing and hair were immaculate.

Raven then said to Alara.

"It should be about time for the whale meat to be done grilling. Let's go have some killer whale meatballs and burgers."

Alara's eyes lit up, as two red hearts showed in her eyes. "Raven did you put cheese in with the meat when you made the meatballs?"

Raven gave her a mock-offended look. "Of course I did Alara. How else do you expect to hold the meatballs together without cheese?"

Alara let out an excited squeal and began jumping up and down like an adult who was just told it was ice cream night.
