Chapter 40 - Echoes of the Past

Mikaela continued to comfort her grieving sister, Chesca, after learning of the brutal death of the family she had considered her own.

Chesca had decided to return to the scene. Despite wanting to stop her, Mikaela respected her sister's resolve and didn't stand in her way.

She simply looked at Chesca, worry etched into her features. That's why she immediately informed Jake about her sister's decision.

Then, she hugged her tightly.

Ellese… help our sister, Mikaela thought.

Suddenly, a breeze brushed across her shoulder.

"They're already here…" Jake, who had been quietly waiting, finally spoke.

The door opened, and she saw Felix again—this time arriving with Zenne.

"Where's William?" Felix asked Jake directly.

"I sent him back to the organization for now," Jake replied.

Felix nodded without further comment.

"What are we going to talk about?" he asked.

"I'm going back to the place where it happened," Chesca said immediately, her eyes red and swollen from crying.

"Are you sure about that?" Zenne asked, surprised. She recognized Chesca from the time she used to hang around Fernan.

Mikaela watched her sister nod firmly in response.

"What exactly do you plan to do there?" Felix asked, looking at Chesca intently.

"I'm going to put an end to the greed of my brother and father," Chesca said with quiet determination, locking eyes with Felix.

Mikaela had never believed her sister inherited the courage their other siblings had—she had always seen Chesca's heart as fragile.

"You think you can end your father's evil? Of all of us here, only you and Mikaela truly know what kind of person he is," Felix pointed out.

"I need to find the evidence that Mom hid years ago. She told me where she buried it," Chesca explained.

Mikaela looked at her sister, thinking: Do Ellese and Felisa know about this too?

They had protected that secret from their father. Maybe they foresaw what was coming.

"I'm going back to the mansion," Mikaela said suddenly.

She saw the shock ripple across the room.

"Do you understand what will happen if you return to that place?" Zenne asked, rubbing his forehead.

"Where's Charles? Was it his idea to send you back?" More questions followed.

"Sis, you don't have to return to that hellish place!" Chesca shook her head, trying to dissuade her.

"I have to. I need to uncover the whole truth—why he killed our real mother… and your mom, Chesca. I still don't understand," Mikaela said, looking into her sister's eyes.

Chesca continued shaking her head. She didn't want Mikaela to take that risk, especially not when her heart was so vulnerable. But Mikaela had to act—on her own terms, uninfluenced.

"I warned you before—you'll get yourself into trouble at that mansion," Felix said grimly.

Mikaela knew what she was capable of. She had the ability to see glimpses of the future and communicate with Ellese and Felisa.

"I'll be careful."

Zenne could only scratch his head in response.

"After Fernan gave his life, you're just walking into the lion's den without knowing what's waiting?" Felix reminded her.

"I'll be careful," Mikaela repeated, her voice resolute.

A heavy sigh echoed in the room. She turned to see Jake deep in thought, weighing the future in his mind.

"No," Jake finally said.

Mikaela's heart sank at his response.

"Why?" she asked, her voice low.

"You'll be a burden to us," Jake said bluntly.

His words hit her like a knife. She couldn't speak. The hurt sat heavy on her chest.

I really was just a hindrance to them, she thought, forcing a bitter smile.

"That's why I want to help in the way I know how," Mikaela said softly.

"In the way you know?" Jake countered. "If you really know your brother and father, do you think they'll just welcome you back with open arms?"

"I know what you're thinking, Mikaela—you want to go back to be with them. Do you think they'll fall for that?"

Mikaela couldn't answer. Her hands clenched tightly.

"Whoa, calm down, you two," Zenne interjected.

The tension in the room was heavy and thick.

"Felix, what do you think?" Zenne asked.

Felix remained silent, his eyes fixed on Mikaela.

"I know you're going to sneak into the mansion," he said quietly. "I've seen it—you'll be with one of my siblings. Jenny."

Jenny? I'll be with Jenny? Mikaela wondered.

"W—why?" she asked, confused.

"I don't know. That's something you need to find out. I can only see what will happen—not why. You'll have to be patient, Mikaela."

"Then why don't you figure it out and tell me?" she asked, almost pleading.

"If you're feeling weak, my sister will help you stand. But please—avoid the future I saw, if you can. Don't put yourselves in danger."

A strange calm washed over Mikaela in that moment. She focused, gathered her thoughts. She believed in Felix. Her first step would be to find out why Jenny would be involved.

She looked at Chesca, who had also settled down a bit, still uncertain about the plan but no longer arguing.

"Chesca, is your decision final?" Jake asked.

Mikaela saw her sister nod.

"Where will you stay?" Jake asked.

"In our old hideout, sister Mikaela," Chesca replied, managing a faint smile.

Mikaela remembered that secret place—only they knew it existed.

"What about your supplies and necessities?" she asked, concerned.

"Don't worry, sis. We survived before, didn't we?" Chesca said with a reassuring smile.

"I'm sorry to say this, Chesca," Jake suddenly cut in, "but you shouldn't go back to that hideout. Charles is already there."

"I can handle myself," Chesca said, firm.

"You're still a teenager. You remember what happened at camp, right?" Jake reminded her.

"You need to listen, Chesca. This decision is for your own good," Mikaela said, echoing their cousin's concern.

Jake was not one to change his mind easily.

"Felix, aren't you going to say that Thalia's also there?" Zenne asked suddenly.

"Thalia? What is she doing there?" Chesca immediately turned to Felix, shocked.

"Just like you, she's looking for answers," Felix replied. "There's no escaping fate, Chesca."

"Why did you let Thalia make her own decision?" Jake asked quietly, finally joining the discussion.

"What could I do? You don't know how my sister thinks. Yes, Thalia's your student, Jake—but she's my sister. I know her better."

"I know… but she's in danger."

Felix gave a faint smile.

"And what about you? Will you just sit and watch your cousin walk into danger? Of course not. I'll do the same."

Jake shook his head in resignation.

"By the way, Thalia is already on her way."

Felix glanced around. "I guess it would be embarrassing for us adults if we did nothing, right?"

Ellese… Felisa… Mikaela thought again. I hope you're at peace with our decisions.

She turned toward the door.

And for a brief moment, she saw her two siblings standing there—faces serious, wounded and bloodied—watching over her.

Then, they vanished.
