Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

I figured it out the next morning.

A thin sliver of light slipped through the crack beneath the door, cutting across the floor. My neck ached, my head throbbed, and my mouth tasted like regret. God, my hangover was brutal. I hadn't even drunk that much—just enough to forget half of last night.

Unfortunately, not this.

I glanced down.

Kyle's legs were tangled with mine, his arm draped lazily around my waist. He was completely out cold. I didn't move. I'd never been this close to a guy before—never this close to anyone. I didn't really do close and personal.

"Kyle…" I whispered, trying not to startle him.

His arm tightened instinctively, and he groaned.

"Five… more minutes," he muttered.

"Kyle."

Suddenly, he pulled me closer to his chest.

Nope.

I scrambled up immediately, my heart racing. "Alright—nope. Get up. We need to get out of here," I said, smacking his arm.

"I think I'm gonna call Amy," I added quietly, already dreading how that conversation would go.

Hey Amy, funny story—Emma here. I'm locked in a closet with the guy who bullies me. We didn't hook up. I swear. But it was a party, and we were drunk.

I groaned as Kyle finally sat up.

"Amy? Of all people?" he said, rubbing his face.

"Hey, I said the same thing when my brother told me you play games together," I shot back.

"What does that have to do with anything?" he asked, clearly annoyed—and genuinely confused.

"Both people we didn't want to hear about," I said, pulling out my phone and dialing before I could change my mind.

This was a terrible idea—but better than his parents finding us like this.

I ran a hand through my hair, waiting for her to answer. After a few rings, I heard the crackle of the line—and Amy's exhausted voice.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Amyyyyy," I said softly.

She groaned. I could hear her shifting around, the sound of clothes rustling—and a guy in the background asking her to come back.

"God, I'm so sorry," I rushed out, "but can you possibly come let us out of a closet… at the house we were at last night?"

Silence.

I pulled the phone away from my face just as the call ended.

I looked over at Kyle, who was now staring at me.

I had cuddled with that man last night.

Awesome. I couldn't wait to explain this to Amy.

We sat in silence for a moment. I glanced at my phone.

"So she's either gonna be here, like… now—or she's not—"

The front door downstairs slammed open. Footsteps started up the stairs, fast and angry. I immediately rubbed my face.

I was one hundred percent fucked.

Amy flung the door open, took one look at Kyle sitting beside me, and froze.

"H—hey—" I started.

She grabbed my hoodie and dragged me out of the closet.

"What the hell were you thinking?" she snapped. "You didn't text, you didn't call, and you're with him?" She shot Kyle a glare sharp enough to kill.

"Did you two—" she started.

"Ew! Absolutely not," I cut in immediately.

She did not believe me.

Amy practically death-stared me as I sat on the floor getting lectured, while Kyle stayed in the closet, leaning back against the wall—trying very hard not to laugh.
