Finally. I have come this far.
When I first received the skill "The Damned One," I fell into despair. The implications were damning, especially after Legend and I covertly went and retrieved Dinah Alcott from where she was trapped and abused by Coil.
Legend quickly reduced him to dust after what he had seen, without giving it a second thought. For our negligence and as aid for her suffering, we set her up for life in the new world. We gave her a mansion with plenty of money and found her foster parents who would take care of her until she was eighteen.
In exchange, she answered two questions for us.
"What are the chances that I was the cause of the Endbringers?" I asked, even though I knew the answer. I needed to be sure because the truth felt too cruel.
"One hundred percent."
It was like the sky had fallen upon me. I staggered as I felt the world spin. My stomach churned, and before I knew it, I was on my knees, releasing all the food I had eaten onto the floor as tears streamed from my eyes.
I did this. In my hubris, I created the very beings that were destroying my world. All because I felt I was too strong and needed a challenge.
I felt Legend's hand on my back, probably in a reassuring manner, but I couldn't… I didn't want to be forgiven. Not after what I had done.
I remembered relishing whenever the Endbringers attacked because that was the only time I could truly let loose, especially with my dwindling abilities. I was still the strongest, but I was getting weaker with each year. With the battle against Scion on the horizon and the Endbringers in tow, I wanted to make a difference quickly. I wanted to be a hero.
I wanted to be The Hero.
So much so that I doomed the world with my hubris.
"Dinah," Legend interjected. "What are the chances that the Endbringers would have formed without Eidolon?"
What kind of question was that?
"One hundred percent. They would have been formed three decades in the future instead of in the 90s. All Eidolon did was speed up the process. The Endbringers are the conflict engines of the Thinker, which she normally deploys in the middle of the Cycle. With her being brain dead, her orders were being run basically on power-saving mode."
A breath of relief escaped me. So they would have come regardless, at a time when I would probably be dead or severely weakened. Was it better that they came early or not?
"See, David. You fucked up, but truthfully, I believe you were being set up by your Agent. It's why you were losing power, too—it was redirecting it to form them and subtly control them."
After that, my memories bled together. We helped get Dinah and the other residents of Earth Bet to New Haven, and the portal permanently closed behind us, signifying a new era. There was no going back. We had to make a way for ourselves in this new world. After that, Legend and I finally had the courage to meet the Faceless One to claim his promise to us: a single wish if we succeeded in our entry into this world.
We knew we couldn't wish for anything too crazy but decided to risk it anyway. And what a mistake that was. We thought he would be unable to grant it, as it was truly an absurd wish. We wanted to use it to gauge his strength and influence. Boy, were we wrong.
"I wish that all Parahumans since the advent of Scion be returned back to life," Legend said, secretly waiting for him to say he was unable to do so.
"Are you sure? I will confine them all to New Haven, just so you know. Anyway… wish granted."
He snapped his fingers, and lights started shining all over New Haven.
He can bring back the dead? Is Hero back? If Hero is back, then this was all worth—
My head snapped to Legend, who had a similar fear in his eyes.
"Jack Slash and the Slaughterhouse Nine will return, too," I whispered, horror dawning. "Along with other psychos from the Birdcage."
Legend nodded grimly as he came to the same conclusion. "We will go retrieve Hero first. Then, both of us will hunt all of them down before they can ramp up and become more of a danger."
I completely agreed.
That is what I spent the rest of my time doing up until now. With the return of heroes long dead, like Vikare and Hero, everyone was revitalized as we put down the dregs of our society.
Luckily, doing so also allowed us to level up. The only good thing villains ever did for us, truthfully.
