Chapter 2 - Cassius De Ravienne

"R...Ray?" Hersoft yet regal voice reached out to me, alluring me in. I turn around letting her sun-like eyes clash with mine. Even a fool could tell I'm her son— those same eyes, burning like the Sun, ready to scorch anyone who stands in my way.

But it wasn't the same for her. She never ordered me around or raised her voice — at least, not to me. I'm pretty sure if she had, I'd have been too scared to ignore her anymore. And maybe she knew that.

I wonder if she wasn't so fragile back then — if she'd taken advantage of her position, making people kneel before her, before I was born, before she married Father.

"What is it?" My voice cut through the hall, as sharp as a knife.I was surprised by my own coldness. I don't usually sound like this — not with the people I love. Does that mean I don't love her?

"I'm busy. Father called for me." I walked away before I could catch what she was saying. I heard her footsteps behind me as I quickened my pace. Her steps quickened too — she was probably running now. She shouldn't. What if she falls and hurts herself like last week? Does she never learn from her mistakes? Footsteps...

....footsteps. I turn around to find him standing behind me. He's here. My father. My mother's husband. My dead mother's husband. He doesn't says a word as he makes his way to the casket placing a slightly withered lily on it. He turns around to finally address this 'not-so bothered' gathering. I catch a glimpse of glassiness in his eyes. His eyes are red and dark circles adorn his under eyes, if I had not him known him better, I would have thought he has been crying. They are perhaps from the overload of the work after the recent incident. But that doesn't let him look any older or less handsome. I am sure a lot of ladies must be dying right now to become my father's second wife and — my stepmother.
