{3rd Pov}
There were three Sin Archbishops who carried the Witch Factor of Gluttony, and unlike the others, they were a unique case.
Instead of a single person bearing the burden, three individuals had inherited the same Authority.
Their names were Roy Alphard, Lye Batenkaitos, and their sister Rui Arneb.
Each of them embodied and represented a different aspect of the concept of Gluttony.
When Subaru decided it was time to deal with them, he teleported directly outside of their residence.
Despite the chaos and destruction that had taken place earlier because of Gloria's clash with Regulus, the two Sin Archbishops of Gluttony were still asleep inside.
That in itself spoke volumes about their arrogance.
To remain so careless after such commotion meant they had developed the mindset of people who believed themselves to be invincible, untouchable by anything in the world.
Subaru did not hesitate.
He immediately activated his Psychic Authority, stretching his consciousness into theirs and forcing them to vomit out all of the memories and names they had devoured over the years.
The moment the connection was established, he instantly noticed an unusual reaction.
Within the psychic link, he felt something pushing back—an intrusion trying to worm its way inside his consciousness.
Without wasting even, a second, he invoked his Authority of Lust, using its aspect of Life and Death Manipulation to kill two of them instantly.
Their bodies died on the spot, and at the very next moment Subaru pursued the source of the psychic intrusion.
In an instant, his awareness shifted, and he found his consciousness standing inside the Corridor of Memories.
Before him stood Rui Arneb, her eyes wide and her expression frozen in shock. She clearly hadn't expected him to appear here, much less in control.
But before she could move or even attempt a counterattack, Subaru struck mercilessly and ended her existence.
With that done, his consciousness returned to his body.
The effects were immediate.
Every single name, memory, and piece of identity that the Gluttony trio had stolen was restored to its rightful owner.
Countless lives that had been reduced to emptiness were made whole again.
And as an added result, the Witch Factor of Gluttony latched itself onto Subaru, merging with his already overflowing collection of powers and giving rise to a brand-new Authority.
Subaru, naturally, didn't just leave it at that. He experimented, testing and prodding the new Authority to understand what it was capable of. After several trials, he realized its true nature.
It allowed him to devour matter itself, stripping it from existence and converting it into usable energy for his own purposes.
He didn't need to literally eat or chew anything; the process was metaphysical.
Whatever he targeted—whether it was dirt, stone, wood, or even something as intangible as air or light—would vanish from existence entirely, consumed by the Authority.
From there, Subaru could freely convert the devoured matter into any form of energy he required: mana, aura, ki, psychic energy, or whatever else his body demanded.
For a moment Subaru stood in stunned silence, even a little disturbed.
The ability was so overwhelmingly overpowered that even he, despite all of the absurd powers he had accumulated, had a hard time believing it.
'It also fills the gap that Wrath left behind,' he thought, analyzing carefully.
His Authority of Wrath empowered him tenfold, increasing the potency of his strength, abilities, and techniques, but it did not actually increase the size of his energy reserves.
Wrath multiplied output, but not storage.
With Gluttony, however, that flaw was patched over.
He now had the means to infinitely expand his reserves as long as there was something around him to devour—and considering even air and light sufficed, the possibilities were essentially limitless.
That wasn't the end of it.
The Authority of Gluttony came with another terrifying application—the ability to create life.
To test it, Subaru experimented by generating a small creature, manifesting a butterfly using his mana.
Watching it flutters before him, he understood immediately that this power was forbidden.
To create life at will was not something to be used lightly.
Subaru decided he would never be using this aspect of Authority lightly.
There was still more.
With this Authority, Subaru gained the ability to command the Mabeasts—those twisted, dangerous creatures designed by Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony.
They would now answer to him if he wished it.
Satisfied with the results and the scope of his tests, Subaru turned his attention back to the task at hand.
He returned to the house where Anastasia was still lying unconscious, and there he found Gloria watching over her diligently.
The rest of his spirits, along with Beatrice, had already retreated inside his soul space to rest.
Subaru knelt beside Anastasia and took a moment to observe her.
Her breathing was stable, but she hadn't woken up yet.
Deciding it was time, he placed his hand gently on her shoulder and gave her a careful shake. "Anastasia. Wake up."
Slowly, her eyelids fluttered. A moment later, her eyes opened, and the very first thing she did was scream in shock.
"Where am I?! Who are you?!" she shouted in a panic, but then she froze mid-sentence. Her voice wavered as she stammered, "W–Wait… my body… it doesn't hurt? I–I can see…"
Her panic shifted to bewilderment.
She quickly realized that her body felt different from before.
The pain and weakness that had weighed her down for so long were gone.
The bruises, scratches, and wounds she had carried were completely healed.
Her stomach no longer ached from starvation, and even more astonishing—her left eye, which had been damaged, had fully regained its vision.
She looked at Subaru again, the memories rushing back.
She recalled what had happened just before she had lost consciousness—how this strange man, whoever he truly was, had recognized her and remembered her.
"My name is Zero," Subaru said with a calm smile. "I am the one known as the Witch Hunter. This here is my contracted Great Spirit of Yang, and I am also the one who healed you."
Tears welled up in Anastasia's eyes, spilling over and rolling down her cheeks.
At first, she didn't even notice she was crying until she felt the wet dampness trickle across her face.
The sensation made her freeze for a second, as though she couldn't believe it was real.
"Y–You… healed me?" Anastasia asked, her voice trembling, weak and uneven. She sounded like someone clinging desperately to a lifeline.
Then, her tone cracked even more as she whispered through her sobs, "Why? Why would you do that for me? I… I'm just a nobody. A useless person who stole food to survive… a lying woman who manipulates others for her own benefit… hiccup …a bitch who—who doesn't deserve—!"
Her words broke apart into sobs before she could finish.
Subaru gently cut her off before her self-loathing consumed her further. "I remember you, Anastasia. The Authority of Gluttony doesn't work on me. And now, thanks to what I've done, it doesn't work on the world anymore either. I've slain the Sin Archbishops of Gluttony."
Anastasia looked at him with wide, disbelieving eyes. It sounded impossible—unreal, even. But then she remembered.
She remembered how he had recognized her even when she had been erased from everyone else's minds.
She remembered how he had spoken to her as though her existence had never been stolen. Slowly, hope began to return to her shattered expression.
"Do you really remember me? You do, don't you?" Anastasia pleaded, her voice breaking as she leaned toward him desperately.
Her tone was fragile, as if the only thing keeping her heart from collapsing was hearing him confirm it.
She wanted him to call her by name, to affirm she hadn't disappeared completely.
Subaru smiled softly, then sat down on the bed beside her.
He gently lifted her into his lap and rubbed her head in a reassuring, almost parental way.
His voice was calm, steady, and full of certainty.
"You are Anastasia Hoshin," he said clearly. "The woman who built the Hoshin Company from nothing with her own hands. The merchant who became one of the five Royal Candidates. You're Anastasia—and I remember you."
At those words, Anastasia's composure finally shattered.
She threw her arms around him and clung tightly, burying her face into his chest as sobs wracked her body.
Her cries grew louder, filled with all the pain she had been carrying.
The last two weeks of her life had been nothing short of hell.
The hell of being completely forgotten by everyone she knew.
The hell of betrayal, where even those she had trusted turned their backs.
The hell of being falsely accused and treated as nothing more than filth.
The hell of gnawing hunger and starvation.
The hell of beatings and cruelty.
The hell of losing her eyesight and being left helpless.
Compared to that, even her childhood of suffering in the slums felt tame.
Those two weeks had been a nightmare far worse than anything she had endured as a child.
Subaru wrapped his arms around her and tried to soothe her gently, patting her head and stroking her back as though she were a frightened child rather than a grown woman.
His affectionate gestures calmed her slowly, gradually easing her cries until she finally stopped sobbing and instead simply nestled closer into his chest, breathing in his warmth.
Gloria, who was standing nearby, crossed her arms and let out a dismissive snort, though she didn't voice her thoughts.
The way Anastasia was sitting on Subaru's lap, clinging to him so tightly, could easily give the wrong impression to someone who didn't understand the situation.
But Gloria kept her mouth shut, recognizing that Subaru's intentions were sincere.
Beatrice, on the other hand, sighed heavily, feeling a headache coming on.
She thought to herself, 'Good grief, does my contractor not realize that this kind of affection is usually reserved for very close family… or lovers, I suppose?' She could hardly deny that Subaru was genuine in his attempt to comfort Anastasia, but his complete lack of awareness toward how others might interpret the gesture frustrated her.
And in truth, Beatrice wasn't wrong.
Subaru had long since lost his reservations when it came to giving affection.
Every woman around him had, in some way, sought his attention and comfort.
Gloria, Echidna, Beatrice herself, and Reina had all sat in his lap before.
Ram openly asked him for head pats, and Emilia constantly wanted his words of praise.
Over time, Subaru had grown used to it.
He no longer thought of it as inappropriate.
Part of the reason was his own situation.
Gloria, for example, might appear physically as an adult, but in spirit she was his self-proclaimed daughter and carried herself as a child.
To Subaru, affection had simply become something normal—something natural to offer freely. His boundaries had blurred, and he didn't even think twice about it anymore.
(Author's Note: For context, both Subaru and Ayan had very little experience interacting with women before these events. Subaru's mother doesn't count, and once he overcame his initial awkwardness, his personality shifted to this more casual and affectionate behavior. That's why this feels natural for him now.)
Back in the moment, Anastasia continued to cling to him.
She snuggled deeper into his chest, closing her eyes as she listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
The sound soothed her, grounding her in a reality she could finally believe in again.
Subaru's hand moved gently through her silky hair, ruffling it softly, before sliding down to pat her back in a calming rhythm.
The warmth of his presence seeped into her body, and for the first time in weeks, she felt safe—truly safe.
"Great! You've finally stopped crying. That's good, Anastasia," Subaru said with a gentle smile, patting her shoulder lightly.
"Now you can return to your friends. Don't worry, they've already recovered their memories of you."
He prepared to let her go and stand up, ready to give her space, but before he could move, Anastasia's trembling hands clutched at his clothes.
Her grip was desperate, fingers digging into the fabric of his coat as if she feared he would vanish the moment she loosened her hold.
Her expression turned pale, her eyes wide and panicked like a cornered animal.
"Don't leave me! P–Please… stay with me!" Her voice shook uncontrollably. She looked so weak, so vulnerable, and for a moment Subaru felt a sharp headache coming on.
Even so, he forced himself to keep smiling, though it was strained, and tried to reason with her in as gentle a tone as possible.
"Anastasia, listen… you're an adult," he said carefully, searching for words that might calm her down.
"I understand how devastating it must have been when the people you cared about couldn't remember you. Talking to them when they had forgotten everything about you… it must have felt like being betrayed over and over again. But that's over now. Their memories have returned, I promise. They'll realize what they've done to you and I'm certain they'll apologize. Not to mention… you love them, don't you? Isn't that why you endured so much for their sake in the first place?"
But Anastasia only shook her head violently, her entire body trembling. Her voice cracked, but her words were clear.
"I don't want them! I don't want any of them!"
She looked straight into Subaru's eyes, tears still spilling down her cheeks. Her voice was desperate, filled with raw emotion, obsession, and a fragile kind of affection.
"I want you! I want you to stay by my side! As long as you're here with me, I'll be happy! I don't need anyone else! I'll do anything—anything at all—so please, just stay by my side!"
Her declaration hit Subaru like a hammer. His eyebrows twitched in irritation, and he pinched the bridge of his nose before responding.
"Anastasia… don't be like this." His tone was weary, heavy, like the voice of an exhausted parent trying to scold a stubborn child.
For a moment, Subaru genuinely felt as though he had aged twenty years in a single second.
But Anastasia didn't stop. She kept crying, her words spilling out between sobs.
"Sob They left me! Sob They hit me! Sob They called me a liar! Sob I hate them! Sob I hate all of them! Sob I don't want anyone but you!"
Her tears soaked his clothes as her cries grew more pitiful.
Subaru realized the situation was spiraling out of control, and that no words of reason would reach her in this state.
With a resigned sigh, he decided to put an end to it for now.
He summoned the power of his Ruler's Authority and gently forced her into unconsciousness.
Her body went limp in his arms, and he carefully laid her back on the bed, brushing the hair away from her tear-streaked face.
'Sigh… Betty's Subaru has gone and seduced another girl!' Beatrice's voice rang out in his head, laced with exasperation.
Subaru groaned and retorted, "I didn't know she would react like this! How was I supposed to predict this outcome? She's traumatized, that's all. The betrayal she suffered cut her too deeply. But even so… I can't babysit her forever. I've already saved everyone here, and we need to move on to the next timeline. Until I find Reina, I can't afford to rest easy."
Even though his words sounded cold, the truth was clear—Reina's existence held far more weight in his heart than Anastasia's sudden outburst of feelings.
Gloria, who had been quietly observing, suddenly spoke up. "Father, by the way, I took care of those two corpse soldiers earlier. I dealt with them myself. Their pierced bodies are lying beneath this very floor."
Subaru turned his head toward her and nodded approvingly. "Good work, Gloria," he praised sincerely.
She smiled faintly before her figure dissolved, vanishing back into his soul space where the rest of his contracted spirits resided.
With that matter settled, Subaru finally prepared himself for the next and final act of this part of his mission.
…
Meanwhile, elsewhere, Crusch was occupied with saving the refugees.
Her leadership was calm yet firm, and she had already managed to contact several Knights and reliable allies to assist in the evacuation efforts.
Among them was Felix, who had seemingly regained his sanity after witnessing Crusch's restored condition.
Even so, Crusch had ordered Felix to be imprisoned temporarily.
She considered him too unstable to be trusted completely, and she wasn't willing to take unnecessary risks with so many lives at stake.
"Lady Crusch, who exactly is this 'Witch Hunter' supposed to be?" Julius, her loyal knight, asked as he approached.
His face was strained, his body battered, and one of his arms was completely missing, yet he still stood proud at her side.
Crusch opened her mouth to answer, but before she could speak, a sudden, crushing headache assaulted everyone present.
Groans of pain echoed through the area as both knights and civilians clutched their heads.
Julius dropped to his knees, clutching his skull as memories—long forgotten—came rushing back with brutal force.
The fragments pieced themselves together, forming the faces and names that had been stolen. The realization struck Julius like lightning, and his face went pale with horror.
"No! No, no, no! Lady Anastasia! H-How… how could I have forgotten her?!" Julius shouted in anguish, his voice trembling as he broke down on the ground.
His usual composure as a knight crumbled instantly.
Seeing him like this, Crusch quickly stepped forward, placing her hand firmly on his shoulder to calm him.
"This is not the time to lose yourself, Julius. Pull yourself together. I believe in Lord Zero. He will defeat the Sin Archbishops, every last one of them. Until that time comes, our duty is clear. We must continue the rescue process."
Her unwavering conviction grounded Julius.
Though his hands trembled and his heart screamed for him to search for Anastasia immediately, he forced himself to obey her words.
Clenching his fists tightly, he nodded.
"Yes… Lady Crusch. I understand." His voice was strained but resolute. In his heart, however, a decision had already been made.
Once the refugees were safe, once his current duty was complete, he would search for Anastasia himself—no matter the cost.
As Mimi, Tivey, and Hetaro finally regained their memories of Anastasia, the shock was immediate.
The three siblings broke down into tears almost in unison, their small frames trembling as guilt overwhelmed them.
They remembered everything—their cruel words, their cold behavior, the way they had pushed her away when they returned without recognizing her.
Every memory stabbed at their hearts like knives, and now, with their awareness restored, the realization of how horribly they had treated the person who had raised them shattered them completely.
In another part of the city, Eridna also clutched her head as the stolen memories came rushing back.
Her body stiffened as her vision blurred with tears.
She recalled the exact moment she had abandoned Anastasia, leaving her behind when she needed help most.
The guilt was suffocating, so heavy that she could barely breathe.
Without wasting a second, she forced herself to run, frantically searching the ruined streets for her master, desperate to make amends before it was too late.
It wasn't long before their paths converged with Felt, who had been scouting the city with her group.
To their collective shock, they discovered that the corpse of Regulus Corneas, the strongest Sin Archbishop, had already been dealt with.
Apparently his corpse dropped in the place they were saying, out of nowhere telling them who won between Zero, Gloria against Regulus.
His lifeless body was undeniable proof that someone had defeated the so-called invincible monster.
Even more startling was the discovery of another corpse—Sirius, the Sin Archbishop of Wrath.
Her twisted form now lay motionless, her madness silenced forever.
The sight left everyone speechless.
The impossible had been done.
For Crusch, the revelation sparked an even deeper reverence for the man she knew only as Zero.
Her admiration swelled to new heights, and her heart beat faster at the thought of the mysterious savior who had accomplished such feats.
Even Felt, who was not quick to hand out compliments, couldn't hide her astonishment. The fact she has been saved also made her feel immense gratitude.
"We… we must meet up with him immediately," Crusch declared, her voice filled with urgency yet also unwavering belief.
"Even if the Sin Archbishops of Gluttony have not been located yet, the fact that the memories of their victims have already been restored means only one thing—Lord Zero has already triumphed against them."
The others nodded, accepting her reasoning. The proof was undeniable.
"He is a hero," Crusch continued, her expression resolute. "And he must be rewarded for his actions, no matter what."
Before anyone could respond, the air in front of them rippled, and in the blink of an eye, a figure materialized. Subaru—hidden behind the persona of Zero—appeared right before their eyes.
"Huh?!" Several knights instantly reacted, their instincts screaming at them to prepare for a fight.
Swords were drawn, shields raised, and magic circles flickered into existence.
But the moment Crusch recognized the figure, her expression changed completely.
"Stop!" she shouted, stepping forward, her voice filled with authority. "It is Lord Zero—our savior!"
Her eyes sparkled with relief, admiration, and something far more personal.
A faint blush colored her cheeks, betraying emotions she had not dared to voice aloud.
Her expression, soft and almost tender, was undeniably the expression of a woman who had fallen in love.
(A/N: Lmao Knight saves beauty still works!)
The gathered crowd froze, stunned not only by the sudden arrival of the mysterious hero but also by the way Crusch—usually composed and dignified—looked at him.
Respect, shock, and awe filled their gazes as they turned back to Zero.
But Julius's eyes were fixed on only one thing—the person resting in Zero's arms. His heart stopped when he recognized her.
"Lady Anastasia!" Julius's voice cracked as he stumbled forward, his composure shattering.
He rushed to Subaru's side, his steps frantic, until he was right in front of him. He reached out with trembling hands. "Wake up! It's me! Julius! Please, open your eyes!"
Subaru, his face calm and unreadable beneath the mantle of Zero, shifted Anastasia's unconscious form into Julius's arms with care.
"I've already healed her," Subaru explained in a steady tone. "She's not in danger. Don't worry—she's only unconscious. She will wake up soon."
Julius's arms tightened around her protectively, his voice filled with overwhelming gratitude as he bowed his head. "Thank you! Thank you so much, Lord… Zero—" His words caught in his throat.
He froze mid-sentence.
Because the man before him was gone.
Zero had vanished as suddenly as he had appeared, leaving not even the faintest trace of his presence behind. Julius looked around frantically, his voice echoing. "Wait! Where—?!"
But before his panic could escalate, something fluttered through the air.
A single letter drifted downward like a falling leaf.
It landed softly on the ground, right where Zero had stood only seconds ago.
Crusch's eyes widened.
Without hesitation, she stepped forward quickly, ignoring Julius's cries and even disregarding Anastasia's unconscious state.
She bent down, her hands trembling slightly as she picked up the letter.
Her heart pounded as she carefully broke the seal and opened it, the weight of the moment pressing heavily on her chest.
She began to read, her eyes scanning the words, every part of her eager yet fearful to learn what Lord Zero had chosen to leave behind.
…
Two days later, the entire world was still reeling from the shocking appearance of the mysterious figure known only as the "Witch Hunter" Zero and his companion, the mighty Great Spirit of Yang, Gloria. News of their feats spread across every nation like wildfire.
They had accomplished the impossible—defeating multiple Sin Archbishops who had taken over the city of Priestella, liberating the city from despair, and rescuing countless civilians who had been on the brink of death or madness.
Their names were already being spoken with awe, respect, and even reverence.
To the masses, they were no less than saviors, figures who had rewritten the balance of power in the world.
But while the rumors and legends grew, the man at the center of it all, Natsuki Subaru—was already preparing to leave everything behind.
Deep inside a desolate cave, far from the eyes of any human or spirit, Subaru stood before the completed Yggdrasill Magic Circle.
The vast formation of runes and symbols carved into the earth glowed faintly, humming with a power so immense it made the air feel heavy.
Subaru had spent the past two days refining the circle, testing its limits, and ensuring it would serve its purpose flawlessly.
"Everyone, quickly get inside me. Dull your senses," Subaru commanded in a calm, firm tone.
One by one, his contracted spirits obeyed, retreating into the depths of his soul space.
The faint flickers of their presences vanished, leaving Subaru alone in the cavern.
He had chosen this remote place with care.
The entrance was blocked with layers of earth and stone, and he had placed multiple barriers and concealment spells to prevent detection.
This would be the last place anyone in this world would ever see him.
Subaru stood in silence for a moment, his eyes lingering on the glowing runes of the Yggdrasill circle.
In his hands, he held the most recent letter he had exchanged with Echidna, his trusted ally and confidant.
The correspondence had been brief but important, tying off the final loose ends before his departure.
'Hmm… I've left them a parting gift,' Subaru thought to himself, his lips curling into a faint smile.
'They'll discover it soon enough. I'm sure they'll like it. And in just a few more hours, Reinhardt should complete his revolution of the sun and finally return. Everything will fall into place.'
Taking a deep breath, Subaru stepped onto the circle.
The glowing runes flared to life, a blinding light enveloping his body.
With no hesitation, he activated the spell, and in an instant, his figure dissolved into the magic, vanishing completely from this timeline.
…
Far away, in the endless expanse of outer space, a solitary figure shot across the void with incredible speed.
The burning trail behind him cut through the darkness like a comet.
This figure was none other than Reinhardt Van Astrea, the Sword Saint.
Having regained his consciousness at last, Reinhardt could feel the bond to Od Lagna—the source of his incomprehensible power—returning and strengthening with every moment.
His blue eyes blazed with determination, his resolve unshaken despite the ordeal he had endured.
'Just wait, Lady Felt,' he swore silently, his hands tightening into fists as the planet below came into view. 'No matter what stands in my way, I will definitely save you!'
As he pierced through the atmosphere, fire wreathed his form, yet he pressed forward unflinching, his will burning brighter than the flames around him.
…
Meanwhile, in the capital, Wilhelm Van Astrea knelt in chains before Crusch Karsten. The sight was surreal even to her.
Her loyal knight—her butler, her trusted sword—had returned from the dead.
Shock and suspicion had gripped her when she first saw him, but after conducting thorough investigations and piecing together the truth, she finally understood.
Zero had resurrected Wilhelm.
That revelation alone left her shaken to her core.
The power required for such an act was incomprehensible, beyond anything she had ever read or studied.
And yet, faced with Wilhelm's familiar eyes and steadfast loyalty, she knew it was no trick.
At last, Crusch allowed the weight of suspicion to fall from her shoulders, replacing it with gratitude toward the mysterious Witch Hunter and increasing her reverence towards him.
(A/N: Mtf is farming too much aura)
…
Elsewhere, Mimi, Tivey, and Hetaro stood frozen in disbelief, their small bodies trembling as they stared at the figure before them.
Tears welled in their eyes, voices caught in their throats.
Standing there, alive and breathing, was Ricardo Welkin—the man they had thought they had lost forever.
Their jaws dropped, their hearts hammered, and before they could stop themselves, they rushed forward, clinging to him, crying out his name in voices choked with sobs.
Ricardo, his eyes softening, wrapped his arms around them tightly, his own emotions threatening to overwhelm him.
…
At the same time, in a quiet mansion hallway, Ram slowly pushed open a door.
Her crimson eyes narrowed cautiously as she stepped inside, her tone sharp and wary.
"Who might you be?" she asked, her gaze landing on the unfamiliar woman standing before her.
The woman had blazing red hair that cascaded down her shoulders and striking blue eyes that glimmered with conflict.
Her beauty was undeniable, yet her expression carried hesitation and turmoil.
For a long moment, the stranger said nothing, as if struggling to gather the courage to speak. Finally, she took a deep breath and parted her lips.
"My name… is Theresia Van Astrea," she revealed, her voice steady but tinged with unease.
Ram's eyes widened ever so slightly at the name.
Theresia continued, her expression conflicted but honest. "I was resurrected… by a man named Zero. He was the one who brought me back to this world."
"... And gave me the mission to protect Lady Emilia."
Her words hung heavily in the air, a revelation that would ripple across the Astrea family and beyond.
