After Jessie settled Luke down, she busied herself again in the kitchen. Steve couldn't even find a chance to talk to her, which left him rather frustrated.
"Hey..." he called out to Jessie, who was moving around here and there.
"What's up?" She paused her work and turned to him, a bit puzzled.
He waved the toy he held in his hand and smiled. "This is really nice—thanks a lot. I should take you out for dinner sometime."
He said so much just to find a chance to be alone with Jessie. He deliberately chose to speak when Lilian had gone out to buy something.
Jessie was taken aback for a moment and waved her hand. "No need to be so formal; it's just a little trinket. Besides, I give these away when people buy cakes from my shop. You're a regular, so just consider it as a gift."
Lilian often visited her shop, and Steve came by occasionally, too. Each time, Jessie would give them cakes she had prepared. He initially felt a bit awkward, but he later insisted on paying her.
