Chapter 39 - THE NEXT STEP

After running out of the room, David didn't wait for a minute before he began packing again planning to leave immediately.

After leaving the villa, he took a cab back to the city then returned to his hostel with a hood draped over his face.

Looking at the hostel in front of him, he felt indignant and didn't want to return, not because of the incident in school since Eric already promised to resolve the issue but because he felt the urgency deep in himself to grow stronger.

He had always hungered for power since he was young but that wasn't his fault, who in the world would want to remain at the rug of society, forced to leave their lives in the hands of others when they had the choice to change it?

When he saw the strange monster in the ocean, it reminded him, the lion he saw was just mutated and if the humans could mutate since over ten years ago then the other animals could also do the same and maybe even better.

If the lion mutated a few more times he would be utterly powerless against it.

He wondered how the world was still able to regain its form and society amidst all the chaos or perhaps it was just like Eric said.

Most of the population just choose to ignore it and consider it as the norms or perhaps a little strange but still manageable.

But things wouldn't remain the same soon, he could feel it, the recent news, the outbreak in the school and the constant mutations popping up everywhere even the sea creatures had started coming to shore.

All these weird phenomenon were pointing to the same conclusion, the time between the transitions were getting smaller and smaller, and soon the time between would elapse completely.

What would happen then was still completely unknown but he was sure it wouldn't be nice.

The only thing he could do was to make use of his cheat before the time came as much as possible.

Returning to his hostel to live like a normal person wouldn't benefit him, it would only keep hindering him till the time was up.

At that moment, he made up his mind, turning back he hailed a cab back to the beachside then returned to the building he met Eric.

Walking to the edge of the building, he stared out into the sea looking at everything in its normal calm state, then took out the satellite phone and opened it.

There was only one phone no on it which he guessed must belong to Eric then he dialed it, soon after he heard his voice on the other side.

"Why are you calling me so soon?"

"I want to join the Alpha strike team" David said.

"You're already in, I didn't say you had a choice in that" Eric replied.

"No, I want to join the main team, the expeditionary team I mean." David said.

For a moment there was silence on the other side when Eric said

 "Are you sure about this?"

"Yes I'm sure" David said without a single hesitation.

 "Where are you?"

 "The same building we met"

"Alright, wait for me I'll be there." He said then hung up on the call.

David dropped the phone then smiled and looked out towards the sea

"I'm really interested in knowing what lies at the bottom of the sea."

---------------------------------------------`

"What was that about?" Nat said after Eric hung up on the call.

"The kid wants to join the main team"

Nat raised an eyebrow "Oh, so he's the fiery type huh?"

"Sure, I felt the fire in him"

"How are you so sure that he is not the lion in disguise?"

"I thought so too but trust me, no animal could act that way, at least not one that I know and it won't be a newly evolved lion"

Eric stood up then looked at the building in front of them

"I'll be leaving now, I trust you can take care of things here."

Nat just watched him leave without saying anything then walked towards the building with his hands in his pocket.

After waiting for a while, David heard the movement of feet behind him then looked back to find Eric with a hand in his pocket and a smile on his face walking towards him.

"Hey kid, you sure surprised me, but I have to ask what changed your mind?"

"Tell me the truth, the world is already fighting a war against the beasts right?"

Eric just smiled and replied "Yes, you're right."

"Then why are you still keeping others in suspense, in an illusion that everything is fine?"

"The government just wants everyone to enjoy the little period of peace we have left before everything goes down the drain, that's why I told you to live your life for now."

"That's it, I refuse to live in a delusion, rather I will face it and deal with it, the reason why I choose this path is because I don't want to wait for the unknown rather I will be prepared for it!"

Eric smiled and said "Alright then, since you want to see the unknown then be prepared to witness a lot of creatures you wouldn't imagine even in your dreams and most importantly, be prepared to die at any time."

He stretched out his hands and said "Welcome to the team."
