Chapter 4 - The First Trial

The Weight of Power

Kael stood in the middle of the training hall, his breath uneven. His body still ached from Cain's brutal assault, but the pain wasn't what troubled him. It was the power he had felt—the brief moment when he had matched Cain's strength.

That shouldn't have been possible.

Cain, watching him with arms crossed, smirked. "You're thinking too much."

Kael clenched his fists. "And you're not thinking enough. What the hell was that?"

Cain's smirk faded. "That was your power waking up. You felt it, didn't you? The strength, the rage. That's what makes you dangerous."

Kael looked down at his hands. That moment—when his fist collided with Cain's—it wasn't just power. It was something else. Something deeper.

He exhaled sharply. "I need to control it."

Cain raised an eyebrow. "Control it? You don't even understand it yet."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Then teach me."

For the first time, Cain's expression shifted into something unreadable. "Fine," he said after a pause. "We'll start now."

The Trial Begins

The training hall darkened. The glow of the barrier runes flickered as Cain stepped back.

"Lesson one," Cain said, drawing a short blade. "Survival."

Kael tensed.

Cain vanished.

BOOM.

Kael barely dodged as Cain's blade slashed through the air, cutting cleanly through the reinforced floor. He stumbled back, raising his arms instinctively.

Too slow.

Cain's fist struck his ribs. A shockwave rattled through Kael's body, sending him flying across the hall. He crashed into the ground, coughing violently.

Cain sighed. "If that was all it took to bring you down, you wouldn't have survived against the myth-tier monster."

Kael groaned, forcing himself up. His ribs screamed in protest, but he ignored the pain.

"You're holding back," Cain said, flicking his blade. "Why?"

Kael's fingers twitched. "Because I don't know what will happen if I don't."

Cain's smirk returned. "Good. Let's change that."

The moment he finished speaking, the barrier runes around the hall surged. Energy pulsed through the air. The temperature dropped.

Kael shivered.

"What did you—"

Then he heard it.

A growl.

A figure stepped out of the shadows. Its body twisted unnaturally, its eyes glowing like embers. A beast. A nightmare. A remnant of the Gates.

Kael's breath caught in his throat.

"You want to control your power?" Cain said. "Then fight."

---

A Battle of Instincts

The monster lunged.

Kael's body moved before his mind caught up. He barely rolled away as its claws raked the ground, carving deep trenches into the steel floor.

Too fast. Too strong.

His heart pounded.

Another attack. Kael dodged again, but his balance wavered. He wasn't used to this speed, this strength.

His body was stronger, but his mind hadn't caught up.

The monster didn't wait. It pounced, claws flashing.

Kael reacted.

BOOM.

His fist connected with the beast's chest, sending it skidding backward.

Cain's voice echoed. "Better. But not enough."

Kael barely had time to react before the monster surged forward again.

The Breaking Point

Minutes passed. Kael dodged, countered, attacked. But the beast wasn't slowing down.

His muscles burned. His lungs screamed for air.

Cain watched silently, unmoving.

Kael knew what he was waiting for.

The moment Kael let go.

The moment he let his power take over.

His vision blurred. His thoughts frayed.

The beast roared.

Kael roared back.

Power surged through him, an unstoppable tide.

He moved.

BOOM.

His fist shattered the monster's jaw. A second strike broke its ribs. A third sent it crashing into the wall, its body slumping to the ground, unmoving.

Silence.

Kael stood in the aftermath, panting, his hands trembling. The training hall was in ruins.

Cain's voice cut through the quiet. "Now you're getting it."

Kael exhaled, trying to steady himself. But something felt… wrong.

The power wasn't fading.

It was growing.

A dull pain spread through his chest. His vision wavered.

Cain stepped forward. "You need to stop it."

Kael clenched his jaw. "I—"

His knees buckled.

Darkness swallowed him whole.

The Awakening's Cost

Kael awoke to a dimly lit room. His body ached, but the overwhelming surge of power was gone.

He sat up slowly.

Cain stood near the door, arms crossed.

"You passed," Cain said simply.

Kael frowned. "Passed?"

Cain gestured to the training hall's security footage. "You held on longer than I expected."

Kael rubbed his temples. "And what if I lost control?"

Cain's smirk returned. "Then you wouldn't be here."

Kael exhaled sharply.

He was alive.

But the power inside him—it wasn't just strength.

It was something else.

Something dangerous.

Cain's voice cut through his thoughts.

"This is just the beginning."

Kael looked up.

Cain's eyes were serious. "You want control? Then you have one option."

Kael swallowed. "What?"

Cain's next words sent a chill through him.

"Surrender."

Meanwhile…

Far beyond the training hall, alarms blared across the Strongest Association's headquarters.

A red warning flashed on every screen.

A voice echoed through the war room:

"Kael's existence is an anomaly. We can't ignore him anymore."

The highest-ranking Hunters exchanged wary glances.

Kael had awakened.

And the world was watching.
