Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Hunters and Monsters

Three days later Noah got a text from a number he didn't recognize.

*Coffee. Mystic Grill. 4pm. Come alone.*

He stared at it for a moment.

Then typed back. *Who is this?*

The reply came fast. *Someone who knows you're not from Virginia Beach.*

Noah set the phone down and thought.

Not Damon — too direct. Not Pearl — she'd to go through Anna. Not any of the main cast — none of them had his number except Caroline and she'd have led with something about the coffee being good.

He picked the phone back up.

*Alaric,* he thought. *Has to be.*

He typed back. *Fine.*

___

Alaric was already there when Noah arrived. Corner booth. Back to the wall. Coffee in front of him that he hadn't touched. The positioning of a man who had learned to always watch the door.

Noah slid into the seat across from him.

They looked at each other for a moment.

"You got my number from the school records," Noah said.

"Emergency contact form," Alaric confirmed without apology. He wrapped both hands around his mug. "I'm going to skip the part where I pretend this is casual."

"Appreciated."

"You know what this town is," Alaric said. Not a question.

"Yes."

"How long have you known?"

"Since before I got here," Noah said.

Alaric's eyes narrowed slightly. "That's an interesting answer."

"..."

A beat of silence. Alaric studied him the way he'd been studying him since day one — methodical, patient, looking for the lie underneath the surface.

"You're not a vampire," Alaric said.

"No."

"Not a witch."

"No."

"Then what are you?"

Noah looked at him steadily. "Something the town hasn't seen before."

Alaric absorbed that. "Are you dangerous?"

"I can be, at least to the right people."

"That's not reassuring."

"It wasn't meant to be," Noah said.

Alaric was quiet for a moment. He picked up his coffee and took a slow sip. Set it back down. "I came here for Damon Salvatore," he said. "Personal reasons. But I've been here long enough to know the situation is more complicated than one vampire."

"Much more complicated," Noah agreed.

"The Founder's Council thinks they have it under control." Alaric's voice was flat. "They don't."

"No. They don't."

"There's a device," Alaric said. "John Gilbert has been talking about it in council meetings. Something that targets vampires."

Noah kept his expression neutral. "I've heard about it."

Alaric looked at him sharply. "Heard about it or know where it is?"

The silence between them stretched.

Noah made a decision.

"Know where it is," he said.

Alaric set his mug down. "I need to know if it's going to be used on innocent people."

"It's going to be used on everyone within two hundred meters who has vampire neurology," Noah said. "Innocent or not. That's how it works."

Alaric's jaw tightened. "When?"

"Founder's Day. If nobody moves to stop it."

"And are you going to stop it?"

Noah looked at him. "I haven't decided yet."

Alaric studied him for a long moment. The sharp suspicion hadn't left his eyes but something else was building alongside it — the particular assessment of a man weighing whether someone was useful.

"You knew I'd come to you," Alaric said.

"I figured it was a matter of time."

"Why?"

"Because you're smart enough to know you can't handle this town alone," Noah said. "And I'm the only person here who isn't already tangled up in it."

Alaric was quiet.

"I'm not asking you to trust me," Noah added. "I'm just telling you what I know. What you do with it is your call."

Another silence. Longer this time.

Then Alaric reached into his jacket and pulled out a card. Slid it across the table. Just a number — handwritten. Nothing else.

"If you find out anything else about the device," he said. "Call me."

Noah looked at the card. Picked it up.

"One condition," he said.

Alaric waited.

"Damon Salvatore is not your priority right now. Whatever personal business brought you here — it waits." He held Alaric's gaze. "There are bigger problems coming than Damon. A lot bigger. And when they arrive you're going to want to be pointed in the right direction."

Alaric looked at him for a long moment.

"What kind of bigger problems?" he asked carefully.

"The kind that make Damon look like a minor inconvenience," Noah said.

He slid out of the booth, tucked the card into his pocket, and dropped a few bills on the table for the coffee he hadn't ordered.

"I'll be in touch," he said.

He walked out without looking back.

___

Outside the Grill the afternoon sun was warm and the street was quiet.

Noah walked half a block before the system chimed.

*Ding!*

**QUEST PROGRESS: Watcher — Stage 2**

**Key interactions logged: 4/5**

*Ding!*

**NEW ALLIANCE DETECTED: Alaric Saltzman**

**— Potential ally acquired.**

**BONUS: 1,500 EXP**

Noah stopped.

"The system likes Alaric," Freya said warmly.

"Who doesn't from the original fan base?" Noah muttered.

He kept walking.

His SP ticked over in the corner of his vision.

**SP: 850**

Closer.

He needed one more significant interaction to complete Stage 2 of the Watcher quest. Plus the Ghost in the Machine completion reward was still sitting there — 1,500 SP — waiting on his decision about the device.

*Soon,* he thought. *Very soon.*

___

He was two streets from the motel when his phone buzzed again.

Anna this time.

*My mother and I are leaving Friday.*

Noah stopped walking.

He typed back. *Good.*

*She wants me to say thank you. She won't say it herself so I'm saying it for her.*

Noah stared at that for a moment.

*Tell her she's welcome,* he typed. *And Anna—*

He paused. Thought about what he wanted to say. Thought about the show. About what happened to Anna. About Jeremy standing in the hallway with that hollow look.

He typed slowly.

*You deserve better than what this town has given you. Don't forget that.*

He sent it before he could second guess it.

The reply took a while.

Then — just three words.

*Don't forget yourself.*

Noah looked at that for a long moment.

Then he pocketed the phone and walked the rest of the way to the motel in silence.
