Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Caroline

Three days after Katherine arrived Noah made his decision about Caroline.

He didn't sleep much the night before it. Ran the scenarios over and over until they blurred together. Interfere. Don't interfere. Warn her. Stay out of it.

By four in the morning he'd landed somewhere in the middle.

He wasn't going to stop it. Caroline becoming a vampire was too fundamental to who she became — too woven into everything that followed. Pulling that thread unraveled too much.

But he could make sure she survived the transition cleanly.

That was the line he drew.

___

He found her at the lake.

She was sitting on the dock alone, feet dangling over the water, looking at her phone. The particular posture of someone who was fine but not quite fine — holding it together through sheer force of habit.

Noah sat down beside her without asking.

Caroline looked up. "Oh. Hi weird history class guy."

"Hi," Noah said.

She looked back at her phone. "I'm not really in a talking mood."

"Okay."

He didn't leave.

Caroline glanced at him sideways after a moment. "You're just going to sit here?"

"If that's alright."

She studied him with that sharp assessing look she used when something didn't add up. Then she shrugged and looked back at the water.

They sat in silence for a while. The lake was still. The morning was cool. Birds somewhere in the tree line doing their thing.

"Everything's weird right now," Caroline said eventually. Not to him specifically. Just — out loud.

"Yeah," Noah said.

"Elena's being distant. Stefan's being weird. Bonnie's barely talking to anyone." She picked at the dock with one fingernail. "And I keep feeling like something's changed about them. Like that there's more to them now?"

*There is though,* Noah thought. *There absolutely is.*

"How long have you felt that?" he asked.

Caroline thought about it. "Couple weeks. Maybe more." She looked at him. "Do you ever feel that? Like something's changed about the people you know?"

He almost said no. Caught himself. "Sometimes."

Caroline was quiet for a moment. Then — "You know you're the only person I talk to who doesn't make me feel like I'm being dramatic."

"You're not dramatic," Noah said. "You're perceptive."

She looked at him properly then. Like that landed somewhere real.

"That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me this week," she said.

"Low bar," Noah said.

Caroline laughed — short and genuine — and looked back at the water.

Noah looked at the lake and thought carefully about his next words.

"Caroline," he said. "Can I tell you something strange?"

She raised an eyebrow. "Stranger than you showing up and sitting next to me at seven in the morning?"

"Yeah."

"Go ahead."

He turned to look at her directly. "Whatever happens in the next few weeks — whatever feels wrong or scary or like things are changing too fast—" he held her gaze, "—you're going to be okay. Not just survive okay. Actually okay."

Caroline stared at him. "That's a weird thing to say."

"I know."

"How would you even know that?"

"I just do," he said.

She looked at him for a long moment. Searching his face for something. He let her look.

"You're really strange," she said finally.

"I'll take it as a compliment"

She turned back to the water. But something in her shoulders had shifted — just slightly. Some weight that had been sitting there redistributed.

"Thanks," she said quietly. "I think."

Noah stood up. "I'll see you around, Caroline."

He walked back up the dock and left her there with the still water and the morning birds.

*That's all I can give her,* he thought. *The rest is hers to go through.*

___

He was halfway back to the motel when his passive Analysis pinged.

Strong. Immediate.

He stopped.

*Ding!*

**ENHANCED ANALYSIS — ALERT:**

**Entity detected. 15 meters. Stationary.**

**RESULT: KATHERINE PIERCE.**

**Status: Observing.**

Noah didn't move. Didn't look around.

She was close. Very close. And she'd been there long enough to see him with Caroline.

*How long has she been watching?*

He started walking again. Normal pace. Normal posture.

The ping stayed steady for another ten seconds. Then it moved — fast, the way old vampires moved — and disappeared.

She was gone.

Noah exhaled slowly.

*She saw me with Caroline,* he thought. *She's going to want to know who I am.*

"That changes things," Freya said.

*Yeah,* Noah agreed. *It does.*

He thought about Katherine watching him sit with Caroline on that dock. Watching him say something that made Caroline's shoulders drop. Watching him leave without looking back.

Katherine didn't understand altruism. In her experience people were always after something. Always running an angle.

*She's going to think I'm running one too,* Noah thought. *And she's going to come find out what it is.*

He almost smiled.

*Let her come.*

___

Back at the motel he pulled up his interface.

EXP: 4,000. SP: 350.

Not enough to level up. Not enough for anything major in the shop.

He browsed anyway. One listing caught his eye that hadn't before — new, recently unlocked alongside the Supernatural Knowledge Expansion.

**DEMONIC RESISTANCE [Cost: 2,500 SP]**

*— Grants host partial immunity to demonic influence, possession attempts, and hellfire.*

*— Note: Full immunity already granted by SUPERNATURAL SEAL for possession. This upgrade extends protection to environmental demonic effects.*

*Environmental demonic effects,* he thought. *Like a pressure point bleeding demonic energy into the surrounding area.*

He marked it. Added it to the list.

Then he closed the shop and lay back on the bed.

Katherine was in town. Caroline's transition was coming. Claire's powers were surfacing. The demonic pressure point was active.

And Klaus — always Klaus — was somewhere in the distance getting closer by the day.

*One thing at a time,* he told himself.

He stared at the ceiling.

*One thing at a time.*
