Chapter 313 - Chapter 313: On Making Money and a Life Log

"Anyway, that's roughly how it went."

Silas spread his hands as he spoke to Morinan.

At the moment, he had already returned to the Forest Ranger Command Center.

As for Pryce, after resolving the ice-layer issue Silas had raised, he left.

"Well then, although I've no idea how Lord Pryce did it, since the problem's been solved, that's the best outcome."

Listening to Silas's explanation, Morinan finally felt relieved.

In truth, how it was done wasn't difficult—Silas muttered to himself, it was just that having that level of strength was the hard part.

He had personally witnessed Pryce resolve both the ice layer and the water flow using a single Champion-level Cloyster.

There was no technique involved at all.

Silas had absolutely no doubt that Pryce's Cloyster was far stronger than even Lorelei's ace Cloyster.

All one could say was, experience truly mattered.

Which made Silas wonder just how strong Agatha really was, given that she came from the same era as Pryce.

Silas now felt that the reason Lance had never ascended to the Kanto Champion's throne wasn't just because of Lorelei—Agatha was also a crucial factor.

Who knew what kind of strength that elderly woman was still hiding?

"If there's nothing else, I'll be heading off."

After chatting for a while, Silas naturally took his leave.

He could have left long ago, but since Morinan had pushed the aftermath onto him, Silas had no choice but to return to the command center and report on his extra work.

"Thank you for your hard work. Once everything's wrapped up and reported, there'll be appropriate rewards issued."

Morinan thanked him sincerely.

Naturally, for Silas, the second half of that sentence was the truly meaningful part.

He treasured every bit of League merit he earned.

Stepping out of the command center and looking at the forest still blanketed in white, Silas took a light breath.

The calm that came after exhaustion was truly comfortable.

However, he instinctively checked the time—right now, the most urgent matter was finding somewhere to eat lunch.

As for why he didn't eat at the command center.

Judging by how everyone there was working day and night, it didn't look like they'd be eating anytime soon. He might as well cook out in the wild.

Besides, his partners also needed to replenish their energy.

Thinking of that, Silas sighed with a headache.

Every mealtime felt like his heart was bleeding.

Each and every one of them was a gold-eating monster.

Without exaggeration, the daily food expenses Silas spent on Pokémon alone could cover a normal League family's living costs for a year and a half.

"No, no—this won't do. I need a sustainable source of income."

Watching the numbers in his bank account steadily decline, Silas barely nineteen years old, finally resolved to find a profession that could financially support him.

No matter how rich you were, you couldn't just live off savings forever, especially when he was actually poor.

No misunderstanding, it wasn't being sponsored.

Although Cynthia did regularly transfer him money because of Togepi's training plan, that amount really wasn't much to Silas anymore.

And that plan couldn't possibly last forever.

Judging from the recent data Cynthia had provided, Silas pessimistically estimated that this fixed-cycle income would disappear in about three months.

Once that happened, the rate at which money vanished from his account would skyrocket.

Before that, he absolutely had to solve his funding problem.

Money earned from missions or selling rare items was never stable, if something went wrong, it would be a disaster.

"Hard~"

Walking through the forest, Silas wracked his brain and couldn't help letting out a groan.

It sounded easy, but how could it actually be that simple?

Many industries were already firmly controlled by major corporations. If he wanted quick funding, the fastest method would actually be to accept corporate sponsorship.

For example—Devon Corporation, Silph Co., or even Kurt.

Those companies had been eyeing him for a long time.

But Silas was reluctant.

There was no such thing as a free lunch.

Once he accepted sponsorship, many of his future actions would no longer be his own choice.

That was completely different from the help he received from Professor Rowan, Professor Oak, Pewter Gym, or Bruno.

What they gave him couldn't be measured by money alone.

Simply put, Silas felt it wasn't worth it.

Many things couldn't be solved just because you had enough money, especially in the Pokémon world.

You might have the money, but not the life to spend it.

And it wasn't like he had no ways to make money, he just wanted something more stable.

"Specialized Pokémon breeding for specific purposes? No."

The first idea that crossed his mind was naturally relying on his breeding skills and Zero.

But that idea was immediately discarded.

Too many people already did it, and it would consume massive amounts of time and energy.

For example, the Pokémon bred in Azalea-area towns for Pokémon Performances;

Ariados bred to assist Officer Jenny;

Hoothoot bred by the Bellvine families of the forest to act as navigators;

or Donphan bred in Donphan Valley specifically to locate agate.

All of these Pokémon-based industries demanded enormous, continuous investment.

It wasn't that Silas was unwilling, it was that such long-term commitments didn't suit someone whose goal was becoming a Pokémon Master.

He earned money to grow stronger, not to delay that growth.

"Then… selling breeding plans or Pokéblocks?"

Combining his identity as a breeder, Silas thought of another related profession.

Essentially, it would be similar to the Breeding & Grooming House Snow in Celadon City, just with more specialized services.

But soon, Silas shook his head again.

The issue was trust, he didn't have enough wealthy, trusting clients.

The best clients would be people like Cynthia but why would they seek him out under normal circumstances, when they could access breeders they considered even more outstanding?

They didn't know Silas had Zero, a bug-level existence.

With both mid- and high-tier breeder paths ruled out, what else remained?

Making Poké Ball, he couldn't.

Manufacturing Pokémon tools, he couldn't.

"Forget it. I'll just be a bounty hunter for now."

His head aching, Silas quickly gave up thinking.

Plenty of people had reached Champion level solely as bounty hunters, he saw no reason he couldn't.

At least during his journey, money wouldn't be an issue. Worst case, he'd just invest more time and effort.

The real reason Silas had suddenly started thinking about building his own industry was concern over what would happen after settling down in one region post-journey.

Many Gym Leaders had opened Gyms for exactly that reason.

"Huh?"

Silas suddenly froze.

Come to think of it, opening a Gym later didn't sound too bad.

He'd have a backyard to breed Pokémon and plant Berry trees, take on League-issued missions, and even get a cut of the city's tax revenue.

The problem was, the strength requirement was extremely high.

He was on his own, completely unlike the long-established family-run Gyms.

And there wasn't really a suitable city for him to open one in.

In overly remote cities, the income wouldn't even compare to spending more time on breeding work.

Additionally, he'd heard Gym Leaders had far from easy workloads. He should probably ask Bruno and Brock about it sometime.

Despite all this thinking, Silas's hands and feet never slowed.

He efficiently found an open space and began preparing lunch.

The greatest convenience his breeder identity gave him was drastically reduced spending on Pokéblocks.

Before, he had to custom-order them—now, he could make them himself.

Not only did that eliminate intermediary fees, but it also gave him better control over ingredients and effects.

"Time to eat."

Seeing six Pokémon staring at him eagerly, Silas placed their respective meals into their designated dishes and handed them over.

Next came the happiest moment of the day for Pokémon, mealtime.

Life Log

May 11th – Clear

Today is the third day since leaving Heracross Forest.

Last night, the Chansey in Happy Town provided eggs that were incredibly delicious five-star review~

Also, Cynthia's payment for this month came in. Happiness doubled.

Come to think of it, the Chansey in Happy Town really reminds me of someone… who was it again?

May 12th – Clear

The Sunflora of Sunshine Town truly live up to their reputation.

Thinking about it, if you want to raise Pokémon in groups, Grass-type Pokémon really are an excellent choice.

That said, why don't Sunflora produce sunflower seeds like actual sunflowers?

That's really strange."

"May 13th, Clear weather.

Today was a luxurious day spent in Tianmu Town.

It really deserves its title as the fifth-ranked vacation destination in the Pokémon world.

According to Cynthia, she owns a mansion here.

Rich people really are something else.

I could consider buying a place here someday too, if housing prices drop a bit in the future.

Thankfully, I found a sucker who was desperate to buy the Rainbow Wing, otherwise I'd never have been willing to spend this much money here.

Apparently, the sucker bought it as a toy for their Snubbull. The world of the rich is truly hard to understand."

"May 14th, Still clear weather.

While fishing, I reeled in a strange red scale.

It looked like it belonged to a Magikarp, but Zero concluded that it was actually a Gyarados scale.

A red Gyarados…

Did Team Rocket stir up trouble again at Lake of Rage?

What a pain. I really don't want to get involved with Team Rocket, but I can't just ignore this either. I should find some time to talk to Mr. Lance about it.

Hmm… maybe Cynthia too?

She seems to be on a mission in the Johto region recently. I wonder when that investigation will finally end."

"May 15th, Thunderstorms.

It finally rained.

These past few days were unbearably hot.

The only downside is that the thunderstorms forced my partners and me to stay in a forest with no existing records.

Luckily, the Pokémon here are all very friendly, and none of them are particularly strong.

Ledyba and Stantler are really adorable."

"May 16th, Clear weather.

Professor Oak suddenly contacted me today.

He said that an old friend of his, someone who travels year-round, has returned to the Johto region, and he wants me to help pick something up for him tomorrow.

I'm not sure why the professor's friend didn't just mail it themselves, but I suppose the item must be valuable or maybe the elderly just aren't used to modern technology.

I'm really looking forward to finding out what it is."

The sound of the journal closing rang out.

Looking at the pitch-black night outside the tent, Silas lazily stretched.

After a full day of traveling and routine training, he could finally get some proper rest.

Ever since he was young, back when he earned his first bit of money with his own abilities, he had developed the habit of keeping a diary.

Later, as life grew more stressful, Silas abandoned the habit for a time.

Recently, however, he had far fewer worries, and so the daily journal made its comeback.

Recording what happened each day now and then was actually quite interesting.

Maybe when he grew old, he could look back on these entries and reminisce about his past adventures.

Silas suddenly felt like he might be getting a bit too sentimental.

"Boss, it's time to sleep."

Blaziken's voice echoed directly inside Silas's mind.

"Next time, just call out normally. Using aura always feels kind of weird to me."

Silas turned around and said this to the Blaziken that had suddenly appeared behind him.

Blaziken glanced at its Trainer speechlessly.

Just yesterday, Silas had insisted that if aura could be used, then it should be used to help train control. And now he'd completely changed his tune.

"Sleep, sleep."

Silas grinned, patted Blaziken on the waist, and crawled into his sleeping bag.

"Good night," he said.

"Ken."

Blaziken softly replied after watching Silas fall asleep almost instantly, then stepped out of the tent.

"Blaze."

It called out toward a Pidgeot perched in a tree outside.

The Pidgeot, which had been keeping watch, naturally flew down when it saw Blaziken emerge.

"Pidgeot"

Rubbing its eyes with a wing, Pidgeot greeted Blaziken before slipping into the tent to catch up on sleep.

Blaziken said nothing.

Using both hands and feet, it climbed up the tree, sat cross-legged on a thick branch, and gently closed its eyes.

Blue and red light intertwined and radiated from its body.

The night was silent.

Scattered moonlight illuminated Blaziken and the tent, making them stand out clearly in the darkness.

Outside the tent, a bluish rock seemed to shift slightly or perhaps it was only an illusion.
