Chapter 309 - Chapter 309: One Who Comprehends the Cruelty of Winter

"Me?"

Silas froze for a moment in reflex.

He truly hadn't expected Morinan to suddenly make such a request of him.

But thinking about it again, according to Morinan's reasoning, he really was the most suitable person to take on mobile defense.

At the very least, when facing the wild Pokémon in this forest, his own Pokémon held a considerable advantage, not just in strength, but also in typing.

"…Alright."

After a brief moment of consideration, Silas met Morinan's gaze and slowly nodded in agreement.

There was no real loss for him in doing so. He had no reason to refuse.

"Thank you so much."

Morinan was visibly delighted.

As expected of the League's officially promoted genius rookie Trainer, his character was indeed reassuring.

"During the mission, please make sure your communication channel remains on Channel Three. Someone there will relay any crises requiring immediate resolution."

After a brief exchange, the two hurried out together.

According to reports from the command center, although there was still some time before the floodwaters would rise to the level of the cliffs, the Pokémon in the forest had already begun to grow restless.

Some of the more survival-oriented groups were already showing faint signs of migrating westward within the forest.

Even some Heracross which was extremely rare had begun displaying intentions to leave their usual habitats, something that had never been observed before.

This also meant that the Trainers stationed across various defensive points were facing increasingly severe pressure.

"Leave it to you, Pidgeot."

Exiting the command center, Silas released Pidgeot, letting it carry him into the air.

At this early stage, there wasn't actually much for him to do. Most issues could still be handled independently by the Trainers involved in the mission.

Scattered groups of weaker Pokémon fleeing posed little pressure at all.

The period when Silas would truly become busy would be between two to four hours after the water level began rising.

That was when most of the forest's native Pokémon would panic and rush outward en masse.

"I wonder when that Gym Leader will arrive…"

Eyes closed, Silas sat cross-legged atop Pidgeot's back, quietly thinking.

Among Johto's eight Gym Leaders, the only veteran Trainer he could think of who was truly capable of handling a flood was Pryce—also known as "the Winter Master" or even "the Merciless Pryce."

As the Ice-type specialist and Gym Leader of Mahogany Town's Mahogany Gym, Pryce's strength was unquestionable.

Not to mention the rumors surrounding Mahogany Town as the birthplace of ninja traditions, the training methods Pryce's Gym apprentices occasionally revealed were enough to make one's scalp tingle.

Hard as it might be to believe, the truth was that Pryce—now in his fifties, a contemporary of Agatha of the Elite Four, Professor Oak, and Blaine, trained daily either by meditating beneath waterfalls or sitting motionless atop sheets of ice.

Silas knew full well that he himself could never maintain such a routine. It bordered on self-torture.

It was precisely this unimaginably harsh daily discipline that forged Pryce's astonishing willpower.

Though many people didn't understand why Pryce, once not particularly cold or aloof in his youth had suddenly become so merciless and emotionally distant, Silas, as someone with foreknowledge, understood all too well.

Misunderstandings born from the lack of communication between humans and Pokémon could be painfully cruel.

Still, whether Pryce would arrive to deal with the flood and when remained unknown.

Fortunately, for the advance defense team Silas belonged to, the League had not been idle.

Thanks to the Johto League's rapid response, several nearby cities were already conscripting Trainers to assist with the defense of Heracross Forest.

Under the most optimistic estimates, reinforcements would arrive roughly three hours after the water level began rising.

That was already remarkably fast, considering the time required for assembly, travel, and task assignment.

Additionally, some Trainers with flying Pokémon capable of carrying passengers would arrive earlier, providing a brief but valuable window to catch their breath.

"Still, the deciding factor in resolving this flood lies in when Pryce or another Gym Leader arrives."

Silas thought quietly.

Trainers like them, whose strength was "not yet sufficient," could only deal with the aftershocks of the disaster.

And even that might not be handled perfectly.

Once again, he felt how far he still had to go.

If he were strong enough, even Pokémon like Serperior, Blaziken, or Gigalith could resolve a flood outright.

"Attention, Point Eight. A group of Scyther is approaching your position. Two Advance-level, four normal."

While Silas was thinking midair, the Forest Guard command center's voice came through his headset.

"Roger. Situation resolved."

Ten minutes later, the Trainer assigned to Point Eight reported back.

Everyone knew this was merely an appetizer. The real defense hadn't begun yet.

"Attention, Point Fifteen. A Sentret group is approaching—four Advance-level, six normal."

"Attention, Point Twenty-Two. An Aipom group is approaching—two Advance-level, three normal."

"Attention, Point Seventeen. A Snubbull group is approaching—one Advance-level, three normal."

Three alerts sounded almost simultaneously.

Silas frowned slightly.

This frequency—was it normal?

He wasn't the only one thinking so. Trainers who hadn't yet faced Pokémon incursions raised similar concerns on the channel.

"For now, this is within normal parameters. These Pokémon species are naturally quite active."

The Forest Guard's response was calm.

They understood the Trainers' worries—after all, they were afraid too.

But as people who worked in forest protection year-round, they understood wild Pokémon behavior far better than most. Some species were even more troublesome in reality than written descriptions suggested.

Especially Aipom, those pests were infamous. Nothing they did was surprising.

They might simply be running around for fun, not fleeing at all.

After all, Pokémon that lived atop tall trees had little reason to fear flooding or food shortages.

Still, under these circumstances, every matter had to be treated seriously. A chain reaction would be disastrous.

"Resolved." ×3

Ignoring the channel chatter, the three Trainers assigned to those points efficiently completed their defensive duties.

Thankfully, the defense points had been allocated based on relative strength. Otherwise, some weaker Trainers would already be requesting assistance from Silas as mobile defense.

The gap between Advance Trainers was significant—especially considering that not all conscripted Trainers were League core members.

"If anyone needs recovery support, contact me. My Serperior can provide Grassy Terrain. Be careful, frequent battles can prevent proper recovery."

Silas calmly spoke into the channel.

Many people lacked experience with prolonged combat scenarios. If he didn't mention it, this crucial detail might be overlooked.

This wasn't like ordinary field battles—you couldn't just leave whenever you wanted.

Or rather, you could but the consequences would be severe.

"Point Four can also provide recovery support—nearest available."

"Points Eight, Eleven, and Twenty-Two as well."

Prompted by Silas, other Trainers with similar recovery capabilities reported their positions in unison.

"It's confirmed. Gym Leader Pryce of Mahogany Town will arrive in approximately five hours. Until then, we'll be relying on everyone's efforts."

At the same time, Morinan delivered yet another piece of good news.

As expected, Silas raised an eyebrow it was exactly what he had anticipated.

And five hours, timed perfectly. It was probably another instance of treating this flood as a live combat drill.

As for the League's official methods, Silas was thoroughly familiar with them.

He refused to believe that Pryce—whose baseline strength was at least Elite level, wouldn't have a Flying-type Pokémon suitable for travel.

Given Pryce's capabilities and the strength of his Pokémon, even if Mahogany Town lay near the northern end of Johto and Heracross Forest near the southern end, it shouldn't take that long.

With Pidgeot carrying him at full speed, Silas could cross Kanto from north to south in just over four hours. Johto wasn't even as large as Kanto.

Of course, it was possible he was overthinking it—perhaps Pryce simply hadn't been reachable, delaying the timeline.

But that explanation was hardly convincing.

"Is the scale of this flood considered large?"

Curious, Silas privately sent a message to Morinan.

He had grown up in Kanto. While he had broad knowledge, he wasn't deeply familiar with matters like this.

"If the affected area is limited to this forest, then yes—it's large.

If we're talking about Johto League history, it's nothing at all."

Morinan's reply clearly confirmed Silas's initial suspicions.

Silas shrugged helplessly. Fine—whatever the higher-ups were thinking wasn't something he could control. As someone on the ground, all he could do was contribute his strength.

Clearly, after learning this, it wasn't just Silas every Trainer felt much more at ease.

The channel even began to see occasional exchanges about defensive procedures.

Pryce's title—"One Who Understands the Harshness of Winter"—was concrete proof of the power of his Ice-type Pokémon.

If he hadn't voluntarily withdrawn from competing for a position among the Johto Elite Four, no one could say who would occupy those seats today.

"Point Twelve reports a Pesudo–Elite level Pokémon. Defender requests assistance."

As time passed, Silas, who had been relatively relaxed at first, began to grow busy.

This report came through his earpiece—addressed to him alone.

"Understood. On my way."

Silas replied calmly.

It had been an hour since the water level began rising. From his aerial vantage point, it was obvious that waves were surging violently between the cliffs.

The suspension bridge connecting them was already on the verge of collapse.

Fortunately, everything was proceeding exactly as the forest security team had predicted, including the Pokémon migrations.

As long as nothing unexpected happened, the situation remained manageable.

"Then I'll leave it to you."

Silas called out to Blaziken, which was hovering at the same altitude as him.

Blaziken was currently perched on the branch of an enormous tree.

"Blaz!"

Blaziken cried out and leapt down from the canopy with incredible agility.

There was no heavy impact when it landed after a brief flash, it vanished into the dense forest.

Silas wasn't worried in the slightest that Blaziken wouldn't be able to resolve the situation.

On one hand, Blaziken's raw strength spoke for itself. At the same level, none of the wild Pokémon here could possibly be its match even if they had numbers on their side and Blaziken acted without direct commands.

On the other hand, Blaziken possessed Aura, giving it a significant advantage in distinguishing allies from enemies. Silas didn't even need to guide it, just giving a general location was enough for it to sense the target.

Just like before, five minutes later Silas heard the report "Crisis resolved" through his earpiece.

Blaziken reappeared in due time and returned to the tree.

Nearby, Serperior, coiled lazily on another branch, spread a verdant Grassy Terrain, helping Blaziken recover its stamina.

At this point, Serperior felt like nothing more than a utility Pokémon Grassy Terrain, and more Grassy Terrain.

Seeing this, Silas shook his head, both amused and exasperated.

"Come on. I'll let you stretch a bit."

Just then, another target requiring intervention appeared. Silas called out to Serperior and had Pidgeot lower him to the ground.

"Ser—"

Serperior called out as it slithered down from the tree, its crimson eyes blinking as it looked at Silas.

"It's a Dugtrio. Blaziken would have trouble dealing with it."

Silas said this while weaving through the forest with Serperior at his side.

Serperior nodded knowingly.

Moles, it was very familiar with those. It had dealt with them often in the wild.

Before long, the man and Pokémon arrived near the defensive position of the Trainer who had called for help.

"You finally made it! Hurry, hurry—I can't hold on much longer!"

The Trainer, who had released all six of his Pokémon to barely hold back a Dugtrio-led Diglett group, looked as if he had just seen his savior.

If not for this sudden flood, even the forest security team wouldn't have known that a Diglett colony led by Dugtrio lived here.

No wonder the forest's vegetation grew so well—these little guys probably deserved some of the credit.

"Serperior, Vine Whip."

Silas quickly assessed the situation, skipped any greetings, and gave the command directly.

Green vines shot toward Dugtrio at high speed.

Focused entirely on the Pokémon in front of it, Dugtrio never expected a Pokémon far stronger than itself to join the battle.

Caught off guard, it was instantly bound tightly by the vines, unable to move.
