"Damn, people sure know how to spend money."
Silas thought to himself as he loaded his plate with beef and several lobsters.
Yes, the Pokémon world did have ordinary animals, but their numbers were incredibly low.
Most people ate synthetically produced food, which was almost identical in taste and texture to natural ingredients.
But this restaurant?
It clearly advertised that it only used naturally farmed ingredients, not synthetic substitutes.
Silas doubted the S.S. Anne would lie about something like this especially since experienced food lovers could tell the difference.
After all, natural ingredients weren't just rare they were outrageously expensive.
Even farmed natural food couldn't be mass-produced, as if some mysterious world rule prevented it.
The daily cost of these ingredients alone probably ran into the tens of millions, and the S.S. Anne traveled the globe year-round.
The sheer expense was unimaginable.
Taking a bite, Silas found that while the taste and texture were identical to synthetic food, there was a distinct freshness and freedom in its flavor.
Maybe that was just the taste of luxury.
As he slowly savored the natural flavors, a shadow fell over his table, blocking the light.
"Hello, Silas, Gym Trainer of Pewter City."
Looking up, Silas saw a boy about his age, dressed in reddish-brown clothes with long purple hair, standing across from him with a tray.
"Why is it that every time I meet someone from my past life's anime, it's always in a place like this?"
"Zhang Wei's fate was the bathroom. Is mine the dining hall?"
Silas mentally sighed but forced a polite smile onto his face.
"Hello, Reggie, Gym Trainer of Cerulean City."
"Haha, I thought you wouldn't recognize me. Mind if I sit here?"
"Not at all. Not at all."
Silas was screaming internally why does this keep happening?!
But he kept up his friendly front, acting as if he was happy about the encounter.
Reggie sat down naturally.
"Let me properly introduce myself again. I'm Reggie, from Veilstone City in the Sinnoh region. I'm currently on my first-year journey in Kanto and have been chosen to represent Cerulean Gym in this tournament."
"Silas, from Viridian City in the Kanto region. Also on my first-year journey, representing Pewter Gym in this tournament."
Silas responded casually, continuing to eat his lobster.
Reggie didn't seem bothered and started eating as well.
"You know, it's funny how things work out. Out of the four non-heir trainers participating in this tournament, two of us just happened to meet."
"Yeah, what a coincidence," Silas replied half-heartedly, still unsure why Reggie had suddenly approached him.
"You've probably gone through the trainer profiles, right?" Reggie said.
"Out of the 32 participants, I only consider you and two others to be real competition.
The rest are just cannon fodder."
His calm tone made his words even more arrogant.
Silas's mind was filled with question marks.
"Wait, isn't this guy supposed to be nice? Why does he sound just like his younger brother(Paul) ?"
Silas remembered Reggie from the anime as a polite and skilled trainer was he misremembering?
What Silas didn't know was that before being mentored by Brandon, Reggie's personality was nearly identical to his younger brother, Paul.
The only difference was that Reggie occasionally showed more respect toward others.
Ignoring Silas's reaction,Reggie continued speaking.
"But I think written profiles are unreliable.
That's why I want to battle you before the tournament starts just to confirm things myself."
"A 2v2 battle.
You don't have to use Pidgeot, and I won't use Staraptor."
Other than that—"
"Sorry, I don't have time." Silas mercilessly interrupted Reggie.
What was this guy thinking? Did he really expect his opponent to voluntarily reveal their strength? Did he look that foolish?
"Huh? Why not?" Reggie was surprised. Then, as if he had an epiphany, he said, "Oh, I get it. How about this? Let's make it interesting I'll put up 500,000 as the prize. It's not much, but consider it my challenge fee."
Reggie was extremely confident. He had read the investigation reports on Silas, and they all pointed to one thing this guy had an extreme obsession with money.
Reggie himself valued money quite a bit, but he was nowhere near as obsessed as Silas.
Silas was speechless. Where did this whole "money-hungry" reputation even come from? Could it be Brock's doing?
He sighed. It seemed like he needed to "enhance" Brock's battle experience when he got back.
Meanwhile, in Pewter City, Brock was feeding his younger siblings when he suddenly sneezed.
"Who's talking about me?"
His first instinct was Silas.
"I wonder if the report I sent to the other Gyms included the part about him being obsessed with money…"
Muttering to himself, Brock continued his role as a full-time babysitter.
Silas let out a sigh, feeling exasperated.
"First, I genuinely don't have time. My Pokémon are all undergoing recovery treatments. I literally can't battle you even if I wanted to.
Second, I don't care about 500,000. There's no reason for me to accept your challenge.
Third, there's a 50% chance we'll face each other in the semifinals or finals anyway. Why should we battle now?"
Seriously, did young Trainers these days all have heads as hard as a Geodude?
"A true Trainer must continuously seek challenges! Only the strong deserve to stand at the top, and the weak are not worthy of sympathy!" Reggie declared with righteous conviction.
Silas rubbed his forehead and took back his earlier assessment he had originally thought Reggie was similar to his younger brother. But even at his worst, Paul wasn't this… dramatic.
Maybe he should record this and take a video. If Reggie ever mellowed out in the future, this could serve as blackmail material.
"What a shame," Reggie sighed, shaking his head. "I thought you, despite your love for money, were at least someone who enjoyed battling strong opponents. But I guess I was wrong."
This guy was unbelievably annoying. And he even dared to try using a cheap provocation tactic? How ridiculous.
Silas really didn't want to battle Reggie, but looking at him now, he was sorely tempted to beat him up just for the satisfaction of it.
"A real Trainer must always fight against the strong! Those who are weak both Trainers and Pokémon alike are not worth investing in. I believe—"
As Reggie continued his loud speech, Silas noticed the surrounding people starting to give them strange looks.
Taking a good look around, Silas quickly decided it was best to leave before things got messy.
It wouldn't be surprising if someone decided to pick a fight with Reggie after hearing his speech. And Silas had no interest in getting mistaken for his friend and dragged into unnecessary trouble.
So, while Reggie was still talking, Silas swiftly finished his meal and slipped away.
As he exited the restaurant, he could vaguely hear the sound of an argument breaking out behind him.
"You arrogant—!"
Silas strolled across the first-floor deck, completely unconcerned about whatever drama was unfolding back in the restaurant.
It wasn't his problem.
He barely knew Reggie, and now he found him even more annoying than before. Even if they were closer, Silas still wouldn't have wasted his time watching that nonsense.
He was here for a vacation, not to argue with some battle-obsessed idiot.
Might as well take a nice walk while he had the chance.
