Chapter 18 - Sham

I am not really a sadist, but being locked away, chained, and nailed to the void, you go a little cuckoo. I am his voodoo doll, only out when it would hurt him.

I am in a prison of no escape. When I'm out, it's really just a bigger prison. Freedom is fleeting. If he were even a bit smarter, I wouldn't see the light at all. I would have been trapped in the dark for an eternity, and suddenly I would be dead as he died.

If I had any sense of compassion, I would have died long ago with him. Why am I to blame for things that only ensured our survival? I'm not, but he could never see that and locked me away, and slowly forgot about me, yet now that he realized how useless he is, he lets me free to clean up his mistakes. I'm pissed. If I fail, he won't suffer at all because he is lost inside, while I get to feel every pinch and disease.

Constant thought runs me dry; there is no point in seldom thinking of the past. My purpose is to fix his incompetence.

I come out of my misery and speak into the radio loud enough to be heard by both sides.

"Alpha Warhead is primed 5 minutes till the end." I know damn well it's not a nuclear weapon, but leverage makes enemies best of friends.

[With Fury and the others]

The mention of a warhead being activated sent chills down their spines. Some even started sweating a bit more than usual. Fury had his hands crossed in front of his face, covering his tightened jaw, as his veins popped out from his forehead.

A warhead is commonly used to refer to a nuclear payload. Things had just escalated exponentially once again, and the room was feeling it as everyone tensed up. The operatives on the ground were also feeling the heat that appeared from out of nowhere when the term warhead was produced. The negotiator was silent until he received a question he needed to ask immediately.

"By warhead, do you mean nuclear?" He asked with a slight unease in his voice as his feet tapped repeatedly on the concrete. He received no response for 3 seconds, and then he got a response.

"Well, of course, this place serves no use anymore, so erasing anything is only ordinary." The response traveled across and made fear manifest. Fury, on the other side, was utterly astonished at the casualness of those words. Blowing up a nuclear weapon in the heart of America and feeling nothing? The other commanders wasted no time and started reporting to the higher-ups. The National Guard that was present wasted no time either and reported up the food chain what they had just heard. General Ross had been preoccupied chasing down the now turned Hulk Bruce Banner, so he would not be able to make it.

4 minutes and 30 seconds left.

My last bargaining chip is now in play; I hope they take it and we come to a deal, otherwise it's a loss. If we agree, the place will undoubtedly become a place of importance, and transporting the ones kept there should be out when the deal is struck. If they don't budge for some reason, then the explosion will go off.

I have been still for the last 30 seconds; the timer will put pressure on them, making the deal smoother. Just propose something; otherwise, it will go off before we can finish. It's out of my hands, but they don't know that.

The threat of a nuclear explosion at the heart of America quickly ignited all information channels, and it even leaked. Tony Stark, while not hearing it directly, was informed by JARVIS after the information got around. Tony would have made a U-turn to pick up something to disable the nuclear weapon, but with 5 minutes on the timer, he wouldn't make it back. The people who had heard of the information started panicking and trying to get as far as they could from New York. Fury and the others were not taking chances in the off chance that they did have a warhead; if they had 1 they had more was the consensus in the room.

As time ticked by, they didn't waste anymore time and started drafting up deals and responses. The negotiator, upon receiving new instruction quickly calmed himself and steeled his nerves.

"Lets not get hasty, right? We should discuss more and make peace, yes? The voice came fast and was laced with nervousness.

"I agree as well, and by the way, we have 3 minutes to discuss." The voice had no sense of urgency. The pressure just rose threefold.

"How about we leave, and you don't explode the bomb?" The negotiator made haste; his foot was tapping rhythmically on the ground.

"I'll do you one better, how about we take what ours and you don't interfere while we leave you with the bomb." Before the negotiator could add anything, it added.

"Don't be afraid, after all, we can't keep a base that is known." The time kept ticking down.

"Can't you disarm it first, and we can talk in more depth?" The negotiator was not slowing down with his words. The tapping became louder.

"Final offer: you keep the bomb, we keep the stuff. You have 2 minutes left." The Guards inside had already packed up, but they didn't know why, since if a nuke went off, they would die as well.

"We agree, just let us in!!" They had agreed, and so the Guards disabled the traps and quickly left. As soon as they were out, the operatives on the ground who specialized with bombs were forced into the building, and nobody present attempted to make a run for it. They had thought about it because of the guards escaping, but with the tone of the voice, they assumed it was in case they succeeded in defusing.

The doors had been struck with an emp so they were opened. The bomb experts automatically made their way downwards to the presumed location of the bomb, and they found it with a minute remaining in the keter containment zone. The bomb was not nuclear; it was a regular explosive bomb. They reported in and gave their solemn goodbyes. They had 30 seconds to defuse the bomb, up above, they couldn't escape either, as they were too close. Maybe if they had run sooner, they would have escaped, but now their survival was in the hands of others.

8:23 AM

(Breaking News)

This just in a explosion the size of a Tomahawk missile just occurred in xxxxxxxxx. We are getting reports now that apparently it involved multiple government agencies, and as of now, no death toll is certain, but from the explosions' magnitude and carnage left in its wake, we can say for sure it is more than 15. Now lets go to Johnson, who is on scene now.

"Thank you, Jocelyn. Now, as you can see behind me, that crater is believed to be the explosion's starting point. When I arrived down here, I threw up as I saw pieces of bodies strewn around, but there was also a tank present, as could be seen by the many pieces scattered." Johnson said in a grim and serious tone.

Shortly after the news coverage spread, videos appeared from residents who were recording nearby and survived. The revelation quickly spread from nothing to social media and news outlets. The political backlash was immense. Many questions were asked about the mysterious organization that had access to weapons like that in the USA, and the people also asked why the IRS was involved in that operation, as well as questioning the existence of an agency by the name of SHEILD.

The morning was abuzz with conspiracies; some claimed the mysterious organization was actually just a front for Chinese spying, while other, more outrageous theorists, claimed they actually contained the anomalous and that they were supposed to protect humanity. The latter were quickly drowned out because of a lack of evidence and the absurdity of the claim.

[Big Site]

Everything ended at last. It was more than I was expecting, but it did come at a cost of a small base, not that I would have used it after it was discovered anyway, and surely he would agree with me. Well, now it's time for reforms, but seeing as I used my skill, I don't think I should make them.
