Chapter 35 - Into the Dungeon’s Depths

The stone walls of the Tomb of the Forsaken were damp and covered in faint traces of glowing blue moss. The deeper they went, the colder the air became.

Rachel clutched her staff tightly as she walked beside Rei, eyes darting around. "It's so quiet…"

Lina, bringing up the rear, nodded. "Yeah. Too quiet."

Yami, at the front, barely paid attention to their chatter. His eyes scanned the darkness ahead, his grip on his scythe firm. Something wasn't right.

Then—

A whisper.

Soft. Almost inaudible.

But it sent a chill through Yami's spine.

Rachel shivered. "D-Did anyone else hear that?"

Rei frowned. "Yeah. Sounded like a voice."

Kira, who had been unusually quiet since they entered, tensed.

Then—

CRACK!

The ground beneath them shifted.

Before anyone could react, a gaping hole opened beneath their feet.

"SHIT—!"

THUD!

They plummeted into darkness.

A New Depth

Yami's body hit the stone floor hard. Dust and debris rained down around him.

He groaned, pushing himself up. "Tch… Everyone okay?"

A series of coughs and groans followed.

Lina was already standing, brushing dirt off her coat. "I hate dungeons."

Rei cracked her neck. "Still alive."

Rachel let out a pained whimper. "Owww…"

Yami looked around. They had fallen into a massive underground chamber. The walls pulsed with eerie blue symbols, and the air felt… wrong.

But something else was off.

Yami narrowed his eyes. "Where's Kira?"

Silence.

The group exchanged uneasy glances.

"…She was right next to us," Rachel whispered.

Then, from the darkness ahead—

A slow clap echoed through the chamber.

CLAP.

CLAP.

CLAP.

A figure emerged from the shadows.

It was Kira.

But something was… wrong.

She smirked, her violet eyes gleaming in the dim light. "Well, well… Looks like you finally noticed."

Yami's breath hitched.

That wasn't Kira's normal smile.

It was mocking. Cruel.

Cold.

"…What the hell are you talking about?" Yami growled.

Kira tilted her head. And then, right before their eyes—

Her form began to shift.

Her black hair shortened, her features morphed, her voice deepened just slightly.

Her body changed.

Rachel gasped in horror.

"…No…"

Lina took a step back. "A shapeshifter…?"

Rei's eyes widened. "You're… not Kira?"

The thing wearing Kira's face grinned wider.

"No, I'm not."

Yami's body went rigid.

His mind—his very soul—snapped.

"…You…"

His hands shook on his scythe handle.

The thing laughed. "Oh? What's wrong, Yami? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Yami took one step forward.

Rei, sensing something was wrong, instinctively grabbed his arm.

"Yami, wait—"

But he didn't stop.

He didn't hear her.

He didn't hear anything.

Not the rushing footsteps of his allies. Not the faint growls from the dungeon walls. Not even the sound of his own heartbeat.

He felt nothing.

Nothing but—

Rage.
