Chapter 41 - A Voice in the Dark

Yami stood at the entrance of the cave, staring into the darkness. His grip on his scythe was firm, but his mind was a storm of thoughts. His battle with Kira had awakened something inside him—something beyond just anger. It was as if he had touched something far deeper… something that refused to let go.

Rei and Lina watched him carefully. They had barely spoken since that night. Yami hadn't slept, hadn't even rested properly, yet he stood there, lost in thought.

"Are you just going to stand there all day?" Rei finally broke the silence.

Yami didn't respond at first. Then, without turning, he muttered, "I heard a voice."

Lina frowned. "A voice?"

"In my head. When I killed Kira," Yami said. His eyes flickered with something unreadable. "It wasn't mine."

The two girls exchanged worried glances.

"What did it say?" Rei asked cautiously.

Yami hesitated. He wasn't sure if he wanted to say it out loud. It wasn't just a voice—it was a presence, something vast and ancient, something that felt like it had always been watching him.

Finally, he spoke.

"It called me its heir."

A heavy silence fell over the group.

Lina looked uneasy. "You mean the God of Death?"

Yami nodded. "It wasn't just words. It felt… real. Like something was waking up inside me."

Rei crossed her arms. "You've been unlocking his power this whole time. Maybe this is just another step?"

"No," Yami said, shaking his head. "This was different. This wasn't me unlocking anything. It was him reaching out to me."

For the first time since that night, a flicker of something besides exhaustion crossed Yami's face.

It wasn't just power he had gained that night.

Something had changed.

And he had a feeling that whatever it was, it wasn't done with him yet.
