Ryu leaned forward. "I need help mastering chakra constructs. You all seem to be experts in creating them." He paused. "I can form mine, but they destabilise within seconds."
Taro paused. For a moment, he thought the boy would ask for something unreasonable. Something political. Then he realised that the question was technical.
"Show me."
Ryu raised his right hand, palm facing upward. Chakra gathered around his hand, golden and luminous, and took form.
A chain emerged from his palm—interlocking links of solid golden light, perfectly defined segments suspended in the air between them. The adamantine chain extended roughly two feet before it stopped growing, hovering in the space separating Ryu and Taro.
Several council members leaned closer, recognising the technique.
Taro said softly, "The Adamantine Sealing Chains, the signature technique of the Uzumaki Clan."
Ryu's eyebrow raised slightly. "You know of them."
"We keep an eye on things," Taro replied. "Distant descendants of Ashura Otsutsuki. Their sealing arts and vitality are... noteworthy." He tilted his head. "But you can form them quite well already. What help could you possibly need with this technique?"
Ryu's expression didn't change. "Look."
The chains began to destabilise. The edges of each link blurred first, like wet paint on canvas. The solid structure unravelled link by link as segment connections loosened. The golden chakra became viscous and glowing, separating into droplets that rose slowly through the air like a reversed lava lamp. Each glowing globule rose and floated until it dissipated and dissolved.
In just a few seconds, the whole chain had disappeared. There were only a few weak signs of golden light left, and they were quickly disappearing.
"So that is your problem," Taro said.
"Yes."
Taro sat back in his chair, eyes still fixed on the space where the chain had been. "Your chakra is flexible and lacks the structural integrity of the Uzumaki bloodline's chakra."
One of the council members—a woman with greying hair—spoke up, her voice sharp. "That technique has been passed down through generations—kept within our bloodline for centuries. You should reconsider sharing such knowledge with an outsider, descendant or not. He is too far removed from our family tree."
Taro turned his head slowly towards her. When he spoke, his voice was quiet and cold. "What will our technique achieve when we go extinct?"
The woman's mouth snapped shut.
Taro continued, his gaze sweeping across the council. "You didn't get the glimpse of his memory I did. Believe me when I say—this boy is an oracle, an emissary of something far greater than us. He has seen the past and the future." He paused, letting the weight settle. "He will save us if we just believe in him."
Several council members exchanged glances, then nodded in silent agreement.
The gravity of their situation—the civil war, the looming extinction, and the solitary survivor—enveloped the council like a shroud. Secrets meant nothing to the dead.
Taro then said, looking at Ryu, "You understand the principles of magnets, correct?"
Ryu nodded.
Taro's palm opened, and a small sphere of chakra formed above it—pale blue and perfectly round.
"Chakra behaves similarly to magnets in certain ways. However, while magnets have poles that attract and repel, chakra is characterised by Yin and Yang.
The sphere split into two smaller orbs, one slightly darker than the other.
Taro gestured to each. "This is Yin." He indicated the darker orb. "And this is Yang." The lighter one.
"Watch." Taro lifted the darker orb slightly, then split it again—two identical, darker spheres hovering side by side.
The two darker spheres drifted in and merged smoothly, becoming one again without any visible struggle.
"And now the opposite." Taro let the darker orb hang, then brought the lighter orb closer.
This time, the movement was instant. The moment they were within range, the two orbs snapped together with a sharp, audible crack, merging violently into a single, agitated sphere before settling down.
"In magnetism, like poles repel," Taro said. "But in chakra, similar natures don't repel—they mix. Opposing natures, however, possess a powerful attractive force. They rush to combine and neutralise each other."
Ryu's eyes tracked the demonstration carefully. "You mean Yin and Yang chakra must be separated and controlled individually."
"Exactly." Taro looked at him. "You know Yin Release, correct?"
"I'm familiar with Yin Release."
"The Yin Release you know is incomplete and inefficient," Taro said bluntly. "It results in a homogeneous mixture—roughly seventy percent pure. For basic genjutsu and mental techniques, this is sufficient." He paused. "However, to control chakra as we do, to create objects and shapes at will, and to stabilise constructs without constant conscious effort, you need at least ninety percent purity. Preferably higher… and also you need both Yin and Yang at the same time."
He gestured to the space where Ryu's chain had dissolved. "Your technique—that spherical attack you used during our battle—required high-level shape manipulation. But tell me." His gaze sharpened. "Can you form a stable sphere without the spiral rotation of chakra? Without using rotation to contain the energy?"
Ryu's jaw tightened. "No. It would form a shapeless mass of chakra only and burst open soon."
"Right, without rotation, there is no force to maintain that perfect spherical shape ... unless one possesses godlike chakra control."
Taro placed his hand forward again, moving slowly and deliberately.
"To create stability, we use a layering technique."
A small, dense core of dark energy appeared at the centre of his palm.
"First, a point source of Yin chakra."
Then, a faint, translucent film shimmered into existence around the dark core.
"Second, a thin neutral layer. A buffer to prevent mixing."
Finally, bright white energy wrapped around the assembly.
"And third, a Yang shell."
The resulting sphere remained completely stable without the need for rotation or constant adjustment. It simply existed, the attractive force between the core and the shell pinning the structure together against the neutral barrier.
"The Yang shell tries to crush inward to merge with the Yin core, but the neutral layer stops it," Taro explained. "The result is static compression. A perfect sphere."
"But if I use a line core instead—"
"It will form a cylindrical shape," Ryu interrupted, his mind already racing ahead. "I know about wavefronts. Electromagnetic theory applies the same principle—point sources create spherical waves, and line sources create cylindrical ones."
Taro's expression didn't change, but there was a glimmer of approval in his eyes. "Yes. You do understand." He let the sphere dissipate. "All you need to do is train to achieve ninety percent pure Yin and Yang chakra, separated and controlled independently."
Ryu nodded.
"It is much more difficult than it sounds," Taro admitted. "When we release chakra, it is always released as a homogeneous mixture of the two. The nature of chakra itself resists separation." He folded his hands. "You need to learn to release Yin and Yang separately at the source, before they have a chance to mix."
Ryu was silent for a moment, processing the implications. The level of chakra control required was beyond anything taught in the Academy, beyond anything most jonin ever achieved.
"We have specific chakra control exercises," Taro said. "Developed over generations."
"I bet you do," Ryu said.
Taro's lips curved slightly. "How do you train Yin-Yang control on Earth?"
Ryu then explained, "We have a particular flower—the Spirit Bloom—that only responds to the Yang chakra. There's another, the Shadow Petal, that blooms only in the presence of the Yin chakra. Naturally, both take months to flower. But with the right chakra type applied correctly, they bloom in seconds. It's a crude method with no guarantees."
"Interesting method," Taro said. "But you do know the drawbacks beyond imperfect control."
"Once you're inclined toward one particular chakra type—Yin or Yang—you cannot train for the other in most cases," Ryu said. "Only exceptional shinobi can train in both after they've specialised. Most choose one path and commit to it."
"To achieve our level of control," Taro said, "to achieve what you need for your Adamantine Chains, you will need training in both. Balanced and simultaneous." He gestured to Kiyomizu. "Kiyomizu here will oversee your training. I hope you don't mind being intruded upon in your dreams for the foreseeable future."
Ryu paused, then asked, "How exactly does dream training work? How do I enter this... dreamy classroom?" He tilted his head slightly. "Because I should mention upfront—I'm not really into dreaming about adult men."
Taro's lips twitched. "You need not do anything. Just sleep."
"So, I just need to sleep?" Ryu repeated flatly.
"Kiyomizu will teach you the basics so you can train yourself," Taro continued, amusement flickering in his eyes. They say you are the smartest person in the country. It will be easy for you then." He paused. "And your fighting ability—what I saw during our battle—and your chakra control are already sufficient foundations to learn our methods."
Ryu nodded his head. He didn't like the idea of the moon dwellers in his head, but he agreed to learn this technique anyway.
Taro studied him for a moment longer. "Anything else I can do for you?"
"Yes... One more thing." Ryu paused, recalling the battle with the blind warriors. "Your men... The blind warriors fought with perfect coordination, even without the use of their eyes. How?"
"Sight is a crutch for those who cannot feel the world directly," Taro replied calmly. "When the physical eyes are closed, the chakra sense is forced to evolve. To feel the shape of the air, the intent of an enemy, and the flow of life."
Ryu nodded slowly. "I have a blind sibling. Could you please teach him that?"
Taro's expression shifted—not to surprise, but to understanding.
"It can be done," Taro said. "But for that too, you need perfect Yin-Yang releases—ninety percent purity at minimum."
Ryu's hands curled into fists at his sides. "I understand. I'll master it first and teach him myself."
"I know you will… Or you can send him to us after you teach basic chakra control." Taro's voice carried certainty.
Ryu took a breath, centring himself. He had secured what he needed—strong allies, training in advanced chakra control, and a way to give Akihiro a life without darkness. Their method surpassed any technique he currently possessed. Ryu had also designed ways to strengthen his other senses, but their methods were ready, tested, and perfected over centuries.
"Thank you." He looked around the table, meeting the eyes of each council member. Some hostile, some curious, all desperate. "Now let's discuss what we can do about your situation."
