I look at the pup in my arms, who transforms into a gap-toothed boy with dirt on his cheeks and grins at me.
"They're cute."
Both Mota and Aunt Linda snort.
"That's because you don't spend enough time with them," Mota says.
He's Aunt Linda's successor. Well, she is older now. For forty years she's raised pups. It was a surprise when Mota said he wanted to do it.
My uncle said male wolves should join the enforcers and leave pup care for the females. But none of us want to do this at all. The pups are exhausting, relentless, and apparently escape artists.
I'm glad Mota is back, he didn't look happy being an enforcer.
"As hard as being an enforcer?" I ask.
"Being an enforcer is child's play compared to dealing with pups." He holds up his arm, still marked with tiny claw scratches.
Aunt Linda nods from the floor, still not moving.The gap-toothed boy in my arms shifts back to wolf form and tries to climb my shoulder.
I stop him. He tries again. I give up.
