Chapter 8 - Bittersweet

… {Sweet: this passive enchantment gives the nothing Bittersweet its sweet taste} {Rejection: this passive enchantment makes all pain to not be felt but rather increases the strength of the sweet enchantment.}

Before Levi could ponder the text further, the stars all around him began to recede, further and further away. The world blurred, and his surroundings shifted once. He was back at the room he was given. Levi saw the room spining slowly, his stomach churning; one second, he was in a vast expanse of emptiness, the next he was on that hard mattress once more.

Levi thought about how he could summon the Bittersweet nothing he possessed. He tried calling its name out loud. Nothing happened. He visualized it internally. Again, nothing happened. Levi tried chanting, gesturing, and even pleading under his breath. Minutes stretched into an hour, yet the failed attempts piled up.

On one of his attempts, he felt the vein on his shoulder pulse. The more he willed for the nothing to be summoned, the more the vein pulsed. Then, a warm sensation spread out from the vein. Something slithered out from the black vein, traversed a pathway through his body, and stopped in the center of his palm. It then passed right through the skin of his palm as if it weren't even there.

An orb materialized, one that resembled those he saw around the central orb. He looked into it and sure enough it was the orb that contained info about the Krag. A second later, the orb began spiraling and then imploded with a dazzling display of light. Something fell onto Levi's hand: a candy wrapper, crimson in color. He examined it a bit and then unwrapped it to find a single, glassy candy orb. Levi popped it into his mouth.

It had a sweet taste, but just a little bit. Levi's thoughts were on one thing alone at this momemt. That was testing out the {Rejection} enchantment, so he slapped himself as hard as he could. The sting of the slap he was expecting never came. Instead, a wave of sweetness surged on his tongue. A tired smile spread across his lips.

It worked! This thing may turn me into a masochist. Gotta be careful.

He then willed the candy away from him. He felt it vanish from his mouth, followed by a slithering sensation retreating back through his body towards his shoulder. When Levi didn't expect it, the sting of the slap appeared as the nothing vanished.

I guess it only postpones the pain. Still, I can think of many instances where this could be very useful.

Feeling tired from all the events that happened this one night, Levi succumbed to sleep. But by the time he went to bed, it was already dawn.
