And when my part came, she nudged me, eyes sparkling with mischief.
So I sang.
Laughed.
And fell for her even harder.
By the time we left the arcade, I was still on cloud nine.
Kat was beside me, holding her stuffed shark, smiling.
And all I could think was, this is it. This is what happiness feels like.
———
The car pulled up in front of Kat's house, and for the first time tonight, I felt nervous again.
Not because I didn't want to be here. I did. Desperately.
But because for the entire night, I had been able to touch her. Hold her hand. Pull her close. And now… I didn't know if I still could.
So as the driver stopped, and she made no move to pull away, I did instead.
I let go of her hand.
I saw the way she glanced at me for a second as she noticed—but she didn't say anything.
I swallowed hard. God, why was I like this?
